We really loved our short-break on the Maldives. Everything was picture perfect, even repairs were done in a non-disturbing way and nothing looked out of place. We loved the climate, the food, the short distance to the airport, the activities offered and the staff. I would even give it 5 stars but there are two things that I'd criticize: 1) too high prices for food and drinks, 2) too many plastic bottles.
1) We travelled with a child and an infant, most of the day we drank the complimentary water, breakfast was included and we had one bottle of the cheapest wine (60USD for a Cab Sauv Casillero del Diablo) during our stay and one evening meal but yet we had a 500USD bill average per day to pay when we checked out. The evening meals were around 300USD ++, a beer (Tiger/ Heinecken 0.33l) was 9USD ++.
And because you are on an island you don't have any alternatives.
2) The complimentary water was provided in 0.33l and 0.5l plastic bottles and we alone had about 10per day. The amount of waste created on this island just from those plastic bottles was horrific. We spotted loads of plastic bottles on the open sea and probably not just from that island. They could easily improve the situation with putting up water dispensers all over the island and giving out refil bottles which would make up a nice souvenir at the end.
But overall it didn't ruin our break and you don't travel to the Maldives and count your pennies, just anticipate the prices. We thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely will return.

Room Tip: No need to pay a higher price for a sun set villa as you can just walk over and enjoy the sun set or...

Dear Stefanie R,

Thank you so much for your kind review. We are very happy, to see, that you and your family have enjoyed your recent stay at Anantara Dhigu Maldives.

You are right, one of the benefits of our resort is the short distance to Male International Airport ( 35 minutes boat trip ), especially for families travelling with kids after a long flight.

Complimentary bottled water in all our guest rooms is part of our service, as well as full housekeeping service twice a day. Many resorts on the Maldives are currently looking for other options. Anantara recognizes, the importance of sustainable business practices that consider the environment and the use of energy and resources and we are constantly reinforcing our commitment towards environmental, social and cultural conservation.

We combat pollution through reducing, reusing and recycling solid waste which impacts landfills, and by cooperating with a local waste & recycling management company. In support of our new waste management direction, we have a composting program, and purchase products which are durable, repairable and able to be recycled.

Due to hygienic reasons it might be challenging, to offer open bottles to be refilled by public water dispensers, but we will treat your comment as ‘food for thoughts’ how we can continue, to safe and protect our planet.

Almost on a weekly basis we are doing an ‘island & lagoon cleaning’ with all our associates from different departments on a voluntary basis and the participation is just amazing!

All our quality products are costly imported by airfreight from all over the world and subject to import taxes and customs fees, which reflects on our pricing.

We are on a small islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean, part of the 100 world wonders on this planet. The Maldives as a destination is unique and importing of food, beverages and all other items is a costly exercise.

We will share your comments with our team to brain storm possible improvements.

It’s good to hear, that your short-break at our resort has met your expectations and we are looking forward to welcome you and your family soon again.

Sunny regards from the Maldives,

Patrick Eggebrecht

Recently stayed at the Anantara Dhigu for a week celebrating our friend's 40th, overall we had a wonderful relaxing time, the place is deserving of my 5 star rating. The service was excellent throughout, a special mention to Cara though who made my friends birthday a most memorable occasion. Cara - we look forward to visiting you at your new hotel. We were greeted at the airport and had a seamless transition to the hotel by speedboat, check-in was quick and efficient. We had sunrise villa's. The room was lovely, it didn't 'wow' me though, it was probably on the darker side and needs a 'refresh'. The bed was very comfortable and the air-conditioning consistent (which I love). the bathroom was all outdoors, it was very much in the island theme I have to admit, I just like toilet doors :) Fantastic bath though and the product was good. If I am being pedantic our housekeeper was a little relaxed in their approach, we had no 'do not disturb' sign or beach bag in our room for the duration of our stay, the day bed was never made and the cleaning was good, just not the level I've experiences at other Anantara properties. We managed to eat at all the restaurants on the island, The hands down winner was the Thai restaurant, the service, food, aspect was all top notch. A close second for me would be the Italian restaurant, we all had great meals and I got to enjoy a truffle lobster linguine. The grill wasn't great but ok and still great service. We had a special meal at Nalidhu for my friend's birthday, the food and service there were all excellent. We had breakfast at both Dhigu and Veli. Both were great, we went at varying times and never had any issues like other people have mentioned. Alcohol was extremely expensive as expected. It is something Anantara should review. Wine by the bottle started at 70USD which would be ok if it were decent, but there was no real quality .There are top end wines of course but they are let down by the mid-range choices. The crystal blue water in the Maldives is second to none, you will not experience it anywhere else. We were lucky to see reef sharks, pods of sting-rays and lots of fish. The pools were really nice, we even found time for a game of tennis, the staff gave us balls and a little esky with drinks in it - such a nice touch. I would think twice about staying at Dhigu if you wanted a resort without kids, they didn't bother us but I know it's not for everyone. I would recommend staying at the Anantara, while I have some small ideas they could improve on, overall it was a great experience.

Room Tip: During October get sunrise villa's. The sunset villa's are too windy.

Dear peteonholiday,

Thank you so much for your kind review about your stay at Anantara Dhigu.

We are delighted to hear, that the birthday celebration of your friend has been a success!

Most of our guests are landing at Male International Airport after a very long trip and it is indeed very comfortable to relax and breath through, once you are welcomed by our airport representatives at our exclusive airport lounge.

Our signature Thai restaurant ‘Baan Huraa’ is very popular and we receive overall very consistently good comments. We are pleased to hear, you also had a tasty dinner and a warm service experience.

Surely our sister property ‘Naladhu’ is a fabulous choice for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries or romantic moments.

We have well noted your suggestions concerning our wine menu, which consists a wide range of international wines in different prize categories. As part of our ongoing efforts to save improve our service and quality standards, please feel free, to contact me directly
( E-mail: peggebrecht@anantara.com ), as we are very interested to hear more about the recommendations.

Our professional Wine-Guru’s will make sure, your next stay at Anantara Dhigu is combined with a tasty wine experience.

Thank you once again for your kind review! We are all looking forward to welcome you soon again!

Anantara Dhigu is just great and close to perfection:
- Very service driven and friendly staff. Never felt such a positive attitude in staff before, and the amazing thing is, that we haven't met one single staff member that was below that high level. Therefore I don't want to highlight someone out of the crowd as the team is the highlight here.
- Great architecture: modern chic that stands with both feets on the ground of Indian Ocean traditions.
- Great room with fantastic bathroom
- Very child friendly
- Buffet food in the Fushi restaurant is from very good to excellent for half board standards. Of course I prefer set menus for dinner, but this buffet was one of the best we ever had (though I never will figure out, why they do a Mexican night in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Feels like Christmas in June).
- Good dive center but very expensive
- When talking to staff, they all said that payment is fair and housing conditions are good (these two points can be a problem with quite some Maledivian hotels).

As always in life, there also are some negative points:
- If I was running a hotel in the Maldives, I also would try to push prices to the max, but in Anantara Dhigu pricing is sometimes on the wrong side of the limit. Two examples: 1) A can of beer costs you between 10 and 12USD after taxes. That's not expensive, that's simply rude and 20 to 30 % above our other experiences in the Maldives so far! SOda and wine prices on the other side are almost ok. 2) With in room dining there's a huge gap between prices and quality! A piece of tuna steak with a ridiculous hint of salad without dressing costs you almost 40 USD after taxes (no importing excuse here). A ham and cheese sandwich comes in for about 28 USD after taxes. The price is not the main problem, it's the quality (the ham and cheese sandwiches I made as a student almost 20 years ago had more taste and extravagance than the Anantara sandwich that even in an airplane only would have been average).
- The mixture of the guests is very interesting (lots of European, Asian and Arab tourists). Unfortunately some of the Chinese guests were very loud.

Service and general quality had a bump in our final days. Maybe because of the outcome of the presidential elections. Whatever the reason may have been: In our last days the smiles were not as authentic as before, the variety of food in the buffet restaurant was shrinking and housekeeping was far away from what it was before. But not really a problem.

Dear to_many_reg_users,

Greetings from the Maldives and thank you so much for your lovely comment about your recent stay.

It is great to hear, that you have enjoyed your stay in general. We will look into your recommendations very careful, to ensure a maximum level of positive guest experiences.

As all the food and beverage items are imported to the Maldives, the prizes on the resorts are a bit higher, than other destinations around the world, you are absolutely right. We are trying, to balance this, with attention to detail, excellent service and a very good food quality, while all our products are hand-selected and mostly imported with subject to an import tax and customs handling fees.

However, we will take this opportunity to review our pricing structure as well as the quality of the food items you have mentioned and discuss your suggestions with our food & beverage team. Please accept our apology, that the ham and cheese sandwich you have ordered did not meet your expectations.

Feedback like yours is helping us, to improve and review areas, where the usual Anantara standard is not yet applied.

We hope you will visit us again at Anantara Dhigu Maldives.

Warmest regards to Switzerland,

Easy to get to from Male. Very nice resort boat and staff. 30 minutes from Male. Food better than most in Maldives. Great staff. Pool is a highlight, busy but fun. Very active part of the property. We stayed in a distant over water bungalow but they supply bikes -very nice touch. Diving was good - guides are very helpful. We had a sunset view (odd numbered rooms) definitely better than the sunrise side. The property has 3 separate 'hotels' on 3 separate islands. Many amenities can be shared which is nice. This gives more options for what are generally limited. Water activity center has many things to choose from. Last three nights stayed at Naladhu which is over the top.

Dear KKent,

Great to read the comment about your recent stay in Anantara Dhigu and Naladhu Maldives.

Thank you very much for your lovely review, which we have shared with our team.

As you know, our 3 properties ( Anantara Dhigu, Anantara Veli and Naladhu ) are just a few steps away from each other, separated by a beautiful lagoon and connected with a pontoon
( taxi boat ), which provides our guest with a range of dining options, leisure activities, white sandy beaches and many other areas to discover.

Indeed, our high-end luxury property Naladhu is well known as a fantastic resort with our personalized housemaster service, an island which offers ultimate privacy!

Surely a great place for small groups celebrating birthdays, honeymoon or wedding anniversaries.

We are all looking forward to welcome you again in one of our properties!

We stayed for 5 days in the sunrise over-water villa. And there's absolutely nothing that we can be disappointed at. Maybe just for someone who continuously "steal" our bike, so we have to walk our way back to the villa. We tried each of their restaurants, but the best goes to Baan Hurra @ Veli. Definitely love to be back here again another time. Lesson to learn : stay loooongerr.... ^^

Room Tip: If you want to stay at the water villa, choose the sunset side, since they have wayyyyyy much better...

Stayed here for 6 days during the June holidays - we booked two sunrise beach villas and enjoyed ourselves tremendously. I was disappointed that we were not lucky enough to get an upgrade to over water villas but there was nothing the manager could do because we had children with us for the trip.

Prices for food and activities are as expected on the high side given that everything here is imported. But no complains as the quality is top notch and in our views well worth the price tag. The snorkeling and sea sports were amazing. Water and sea life (depending on locations) and weather were mostly great. Most importantly, the service level is excellent. I really can't think of any major issues during the trip as everybody was friendly and always ready to help. Appreciate the attentiveness of the Anantara team and the little surprises (free champagne and wine) that they have showered us during the stay.

Have planned for another trip to Maldives in December 2013 and we were debating if we should visit Veli instead of going to Dhigu again but in the end we decided that we had such a good time in June at Dhigu that we definitely want to go again! Am going to visit for 3 days before Christmas so hopefully we get lucky enough for an upgrade to over water villas this time round (not bringing any child this trip)! In any case, Veli is just a short boat ride away so no issues getting there while staying on Dhigu.

Looking forward to yet another great trip to Dhigu. Would strongly recommend this resort to anyone who wants to enjoy a great trip to Maldives.

Dear Colin T,

Thank you very much for your lovely feedback. We are very happy, that you have enjoyed your stay with us.

Wherever you will stay in coming December ( Anantara Veli or Anantara Dhigu ) we will surprise and WOW you again, rest assured!

You are right, most of the food items are imported which is ( unfortunately ) affecting the prizes in all the resorts on the Maldives.

Part of our ongoing effort is, to add value to all our packages, excursions and accommodation’s, wherever we can in order to balance this.

It’s great to read, that our ‘little moments of surprise’ have enhanced your Anantara experience!

We are looking forward to welcome you and your family in December again!

My family stayed at the Dhigu Anantara Resort for five days this week, and I absolutely loved it. I decided to write a review because I thought that people would be interested in what an eleven year old girl thought of the resort. Firstly, the location of our villa, villa #77 was great because it was right near the beach where the water was quite relaxing. However, in this particular area the water is very shallow, so I suggest that if you want water that goes deep quickly, to request for a villa on the side where the reception is located. Another great thing about this resort is that the staff are extraordinarily friendly, and they cater for all needs. One thing that I think is very appealing to many teenagers and kids that come to this resort is the amount of great water sports they offer. I recommend all children and teens to try the underwater rocket, a device that is a lotsmaller than a jet ski, but is about as thrilling. I enjoyed this most because it gives kids a sense of individuality because you get to choose the speed you want to go at, and travel underneath or on top of the water surface. My dad and I also really liked going Scuba Diving near the resort. Participants travel by boat to a really nice area to scuba dive down to 12m in the beginner course after doing a quick practice near the resort. The food at Dhigu is pretty good, but I would say that breakfast is the best. The breakfast food at Dhigu is great for kids because they have healthy fruit, but also waffles, pancakes, and crepes. They also have a wide variety of cereals and granolas, and they have en egg stand, where you can get an egg made up for you. The children's menu for dinner and lunch is really good, and the kids buffet at the aqua is really nice too. If ordering from the adults menu, I recommend the chicken quesadillas (they are amazing, I had them three days in a row!) The Thai restaurant called Baan Huraa is also worth going to, which is located at Veli. My parents have said that when we come back, my mom will bring more of her own magazines, and she will also bring her own decaffeinated coffee. My dad said that we would probably not go to the buffet dinner again because it is extremely overpriced and isn't worth the price. I would definitely go back to the Thai restaurant and the Italian restaurant because they are my favorite. Overall, I would definitely recommend this resort to friends and family because it has great staff, food, and water sports. I would like to thank the following staff for making my stay at the resort the best:
Moon - one of the dive instructors at the water sports center. I thought she was really good because she tends to be very patient and she is a great instructor.
Gness - she works at the Fushi Cafe. Gness is really kind and helped us by telling us the ingredients in some of the foods so we could see what my younger brother could eat because he is allergic to many things.

Room Tip: If traveling with children, ensure that you are staying in a villa either in front of reception or o...
