We have just returned from two nights at The Holly Bush and the tranquility of rural Northumberland. Great pub, good food, friendly staff and locals. Shame it is two and a half hours travel door to door, otherwise we would be back on a regular basis.
You are doing everything right so please don't change.

Room Tip: Only saw the one room but from what we saw on the website any would be a good choice.

We booked a table at this pub expecting something a little more appealing than what we found. The pub itself is unattractive, the bar area resembles a canteen more than a country inn. The dining area is a little better but not a lot.
The menu was quite limited and not at all adventurous. I had garlic and Stilton mushrooms to start. These came in quite a thin sauce with nowhere near enough Stilton for my taste and two small pieces of bread. My main course was beef and ale pie, or so it should have been. It was actual a beef and ale casserole served in a small dish and topped with a rectangular piece of puff pastry which had been cooked separately and then plonked on top, it wasn't even the same shape as the dish. This is not a pie.
The food was OK but nothing special. We were all a little disappointed by our night out.

Why do people review us as a food destination ? We have never set out to be that - we are a proper little country pub, in a beautiful but very sparsely populated area, there are very few of us still about... This reviewer has a Trip Advisor Badge for being a 'Top Contributor' - in other words he feels the need to review everything he eats and drinks to a worldwide web. Well perhaps he did not notice that the 4 stars outside our door are from Visit England and not Michelin ! We are not a Gastro Pub, the Holly Bush is about the whole experience staying, joining in with the great locals (optional), eating good honest, home-made pub food and drinking a decent pint, or two....
The pub is described as 'unattractive' and similar to a canteen - I don't think I've ever met anyone who doesn't like our huge log fire and I'm not sure if I've ever seen Farrow and Ball paint in a canteen ?? Perhaps he's from the competition or maybe he just needs to get a life....
My team work very hard to deliver a good experience and a 3 star rating is quite harsh and actually alters our overall ranking on Trip Advisor, not quite fair, but hey we have lots of amazing reviews we can be proud of. Onward and Upward....

There is something about walking into a small bar in an old pub in a remote place that is inherently intimidating - American Werewolf in London springs to mind - but the welcome we received from owner, staff, regulars, customers and their dogs alike was enough to make us feel like we'd returned home from years abroad.

Our room was beautifully and recently refurbished, and quiet, too; being in the adjoining cottage rather than over the bar. The food was unfussy and simple but never dull or predictable, and the quality of raw materials, preparation and cooking as good as can be.

A really special place and a splendid weekend break. We'll be back.

Room Tip: The cottage rooms are quieter than the ones over the bar.

My partner and I stayed here in June 2013 and it was sublime. When we arrived the lovely proprietor upgraded our room (free of charge!) as the hotel had had a cancellation so we stayed in the Grey Room - really the nicest hotel room I've ever stayed in. We had a lovely meal on the evening in the restaurant (the mushroom stroganoff and Cumberland sausage and mash were delicious) and then were welcomed by the locals in the pub to join them in their singing and conversation long into the night. It really was a wonderful stay, thanks to the Hollybush Inn staff and friends!

We were staying nearby at the Wild Northumbrian glamping site and had already looked at the Hollybush online and booked in for dinner. We decided to take advantage of a break in the rain to walk along to the Hollybush after lunch just for a pint or two and to check out the menu. We were really glad that we did! As others have said, walking into a country pub can often feel a little intimidating. Either you get the feeling you're not that welcome or you're a bit of a novelty. Nothing could be further from the truth here. the bar staff and regulars were very welcoming without being too full on. It's a really stylish bar area, very cosy with a roaring fire in the range but nice simple decor. They haven't stripped out the original features but the nice neutral colour scheme and bar make a feature of them. A great range of drinks is on offer too. We enjoyed a pleasant hour or so, listening to the gentle banter of the locals, having a couple of drinks and reading whilst feeling totally at home. The TV was on as it was the six nations but I wouldn't imagine it's the sort of pub where the TV is on all the time.

We went back later as planned for dinner. Again, very friendly and welcoming without being pushy. Our waitress was young but very good and a really lovely girl. The food was really good, honest pub grub but cooked really well and with care. I had bangers and mash and the sausage was delicious, very good quality and the vegetables were carefully cooked. My husband had the steak and ale pie and the quality of this was superb, overflowing with steak and the chips were excellent - and an excellent chip is hard to find! We had starters too which were also very good, declined dessert but they did sound lovely.

The dining area is very pleasant, candlelit, nice decor etc and comfortable.

One last point, the ladies toilet was immaculate. Super clean, lovely fresh decor, warm, good quality fixtures and fittings and nice little details which show that they really care about the customer experience.

We have already thought that if we get the chance for a night away again soon we would quite like to come an actually stay in the pub as if the rest of the place is anything to go by I'm sure the rooms and experience would be great.

The Holly Bush Inn is a perfect country pub. It's traditional but has been carefully updated without loosing any of its charm. The welcome and service was very friendly and our room was nicely styled with comfy bed, powerful shower, TV and free wi-fi. The bar is the local that everyone who doesn't have one dreams about - a local where visitors are welcome, a real ale on tap and an open fire. The pub food was very good too and you can sit in intimate dining areas adjacent to the bar if you wish. There was impromptu singing on the Saturday night and I understand that this is quite common - a great atmosphere.

Its a good location for Kielder Water - about 10 mins drive and walking in the Cheviots of course. We liked charming Rothbury about 30 minutes drive.

Room Tip: They are all individually styled so check out the website to make your choice.
