When visiting family in the New Orleans area, we usually dine at the Mandarin House Chinese Buffet location in Algiers (located on the Westbank of New Orleans). However, during my most recent visit, this location was closed due to a Mardi Gras parade. A few days later while on Lapalco Boulevard, I noticed a Mandarin House sign and decided to give the Harvey location a try.

Don't be fooled by the plain, strip mall exterior. Upon entering the establishment you will immediately notice that the decor is very nice and modern. The seating is pretty much evenly divided between tables in the middle of the dining room and large, roomy, high-back booths that ring the perimeter. There is also another dining room (which is probably also used for private functions) that contains smaller booths and a bar.

Now, for the food...
The buffet area is huge and contains numerous steam tables that offer everything from fried shrimp, stuffed crabs, boiled shrimp (yes, VERY HEAVY on New Orleans style seafood dishes), baked salmon and tons of Asian dishes (including mei fun, lo mein, fried rice, tasty soups (the hot & sour was awesome) and many delicious vegetable items. There is also a salad bar, a made-to-order grill area, sushi bar, and even a dessert bar (which included warm bread pudding with bourbon sauce).

The two drawbacks:
1) I do not eat seafood so I was not thrilled at paying a higher price for the Sunday "enhanced" seafood buffet. Note: best deal is lunch which is served prior to 3:30 P.M. Mon. - Sat.

2) The A/C was blasting and tended to make the food cold.

Overall, Mandarin in Harvey, LA is a VERY DECENT and TASTY Chinese dining experience. First survey the buffet offerings, make your selection and then enjoy!
