T'Frere's Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #2 of 4 Lafayette B&B and Inns
Reviewed 16 May 2011

My 82 year old mother and I made our way from Houston to New Orleans (her first visit) and broke the long trip up by stopping in Lafayette, midway to New Orleans. We stayed in 2 highly recommended B&B's in New Orleans after our stay at the Aaah T'Frere's. Hands down this place was our favorite part. We should have done the trip backwards and had this place as our grand finale. The son, John, was our highlight. He spent nearly 30 minutes visiting with us, telling us the history of the home along with a tour, giving us a lesson on cajun's, acadian's, creole, music, and seraded us with a personal accordian solo and dance. We also were served their version of a Mint Julep and along with little toasts with a crap topping. Yummy! John was just awesome and made our trip so personal and special. I can't wait to return with my husband. I highly highly recommend. You will not be disappointed. The gorgeous home and antique furnishings are delighful. Lucious breakfast was served by the father, Mr. Pastor. Beautiful loving family. Divine!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Mary Room - awesome!

We've stayed in B&Bs all over the US and Ireland and have truly never had so warm a welcome as at T'Frere's. John took over the intro and tour from his mother and had us laughing while enjoying our excellent "cocktail" (light on booze but long on flavor) and tasty appetizer. Many suggestions followed for tours and dinner and even a zydeco music demo on his accordion. We took him up on his suggestion to stop in for the music and dancing at Randall's - what an experience! Our room in the building in the back was very comfortable and cosy with lots of homey touches. (A nice firm kingsized bed.) We peeked into several rooms in the main house that also appeared comfy but with double or twin beds. Didn't really notice any traffic noise and we live in the country and are rather sensitive to that sort of thing.

They pride themselves on their ooh-la-la breakfast and I understand they have 7 different versions so I won't go into detail. I will say we dined at both Stella! and GW Fins this trip to NOLA and would put our breakfast at T'Frere's right up there with either of these fine restaurants both in quality and sheer yumminess. This may not be a 5-star hotel but it is a 5-star experience. Go there. Enjoy.

Room Tip: Rooms are well-described on the website.

My husband and I have visited New Orleans countless times, but for this vacation with our children we wanted to broaden our trip to include Acadiana. We picked this B&B for its central location and we couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. We had two rooms upstairs, one for ourselves and the other across the hall for our kids aged 7 and 11. We felt very private and safe since there were no other rooms on the floor and the kids were thrilled with their special place. They also loved exploring the grounds, which are secluded and lovely. Being off the main highway is only an issue if you want to be out in the middle of nowhere; for us, it was not even a thing. The house is beautifully decorated and well-maintained; the proprietors, family and staff were wonderfully hospitable and friendly; the breakfasts were works of art! We very much appreciated John's sight-seeing suggestions. Definitely recommend T'Frere's as a base of exploration for the area. Maugie was even so kind as to mail some decorating tips we'd talked about!

When my husband and I arrived at this beautiful property yesterday afternoon we were warmly greeted by the innkeepers, Pat and Maugie Pastor and their son John and given a short tour of the main house. Then were treated to tasty crabmeat canapes and a refreshing cold beverage before being shown to our room (the Bourree Room, one of two rooms that are located behind the main house in the detached "garconniere"). Other reviews complain about the fact that this property is located close to a busy street but whatever noise there was from traffic didn't bother us at all and, besides, the road is mostly obscured by trees/bushes. The "ooh la la" breakfast was a treat. We love staying at B & B's and we have decided that this is one of our new favorites! It was a memorable (not to mention extremely reasonable) quick getaway for us!

Thank you for your time shared here with us in cajun country!! We hope you return home with the joi de vivre that is so contageous and heart warming. If daddy didn't give you a hug on your way out or mom didn't wave and tell you she loved you or you didn't hear me play my accordion for you, hopefully this message will reach you and give you a smile. Bringing you back to our great times together, or some wonderful memory of true cajun life..

We loved everything about this B&B. We treveled from New Orleans to get a "taste" of Cajun Country. We were not disappointed. The hosts were so gracious and provided some history of the house and area. Our room was lovely. We will definitely come back for another visit and would highly recommend this B&B to anyone who wants to get a feel for the culture of the area. While in Lafayette, we ate dinner at the Village Cafe and would highly recommend it as well..

We truly did enjoy our stay at T'Frere's. Loved Maugie and Pat and John. Beautiful house, great room, and delicious breakfast. We met another family from California. We had a lot in common. Went dancing that night. Only thing I didn't like was the location. Right on a very busy street. But when the house was built the street wasn't there, so we overlooked that and had a wonderful time.

When our family travels we always look for accommodations that offer an alternative to standard chain motels, and T'Frere's didn't disappoint in that regard. The house, like many in Louisiana, is brimming with antiques. The Victorian ambience was a bit much for my husband's simpler tastes, but our 11-year-old daughter and I found it charming.

The three of us stayed here in the lovely Mary Room -- it had a beautiful wood antique canopy bed, plus a smaller single bed for our daughter - just right. However -- and this was unfortunately a big drawback: our room was at the very front of the house, and the traffic on the busy road directly in front of the B&B kept me awake well into the night, and woke me up in the morning. You would never know from the website or brochures that T'Frere's sits on the corner of a bustling intersection. We were quite surprised when we drove up, as we expected it would be out in the country, or at least on a quiet road. But once you're inside, you don't notice it -- unless you are trying to sleep in one of the front bedrooms.

The advantage is that the B&B is centrally located in Lafayette, and if you can overlook the noise element, you will be rewarded with a delicious breakfast and amiable hospitality. Maugie kindly made reservations for us for a swamp tour, and was happy to offer suggestions for our sightseeing. She is vintage Cajun with a lively sense of humor.

We weren't able to arrive till 6:00, so we missed the reception hour from 4--5 with the juleps and canapes. They had some drinks waiting for us in the fridge, though, and had saved a tray of the appetizers (yummy toast rounds with a crab spread) for us to pop in the oven in the kitchen -- a nice touch. But we wished we would have arrived for the special welcome on the screened porch.
