This cemetery is set in a gorgeous, rustic setting, with rolling hills. It's a nice walk and there are helpful informational signs. It's conveniently located right in the middle of town, too.

Found this cemetery unexpectedly. We decided to park and explore it. Very old graves and beautiful headstones and gated grave areas.

I've spent a lot of time in American Cemetery, mainly updating cemetery databases and photographing ancestors of mine and friend's monuments. It's probably one of my favorites, of course it has the "faux" grave of Steel Magnolia's heroine Shelby also! If you are apprehensive about the area, I recommend going with a tour and there's a great character tour in October every year not to be missed! Personally, I have never had one problem and have spent hours upon hours in AC over the past ten years. There are a few informative markers, but exploring on your own is not discouraged, especially when trees and shrubs are in bloom. Just be aware of things that can fall or topple, be it a huge oak tree limb or a monument. It's one of the oldest and contains several differential examples of mortuary architecture. I also visit Catholic Cemetery a few blocks away a lot, that is a very interesting graveyard as well.

My friend and I were trying to go on a Steel Magnolia tour. Walking to the cemetery I did not feel safe. We never could find the tomb stone for Steel Magnolia

This cemetery was established around 1737. The original founders and residents of Natchitoches (established 1714) are buried here although most of the oldest graves no longer are marked.

There are many burials said to have been here that cannot be documented. The grave of Davy Crockett's wife is one of those.

The movie "Steel Magnolias" filmed one of the climactic scenes here. There is a marker commemorating that filming.
