“Very nice place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2014

We got there late so we had just missed the last tour of the day. We took a self-guided tour of the grounds which was very interesting. I enjoyed the gardens and out buildings, the gravel trails.

“Many Original Audubon Paintings on Site”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 January 2014

Enjoyed our visit to the Oakley. Tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Many steps to go up and down, but worth it. Admission is not free to seniors as was posted on some sites.
Slave cabins within easy short walk to main house. Would recommend to others visiting the area.

“Working plantation worth the side trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2014

We are not on near the plantations of River Road but we want to see the house James Audobon lived during his working life. Audubon was hired as a tutor to come to the plantation and teach the young daughter Eliza and also to study the local birdlife.

The accommodation were not grand but the plantation has been restored and open to give a true slice of life in a working household. The ceilings are low, the floors uneven the furnishing true to the period. Our guide was clearly proud of the the rich history and loving restoration of this building. We could see the downstair dining rooms with the original fan to cool the dinners and keep the bugs off the food. Upstairs the sleeping porch had innovative shutters that shielded the room and channeled the air in.

The out building are simple and give a chance to stroll around the garden area. It is not a private foundation but a state park that is run with care and consideration. The museum on the grounds also gives some insight to the local history.

“Historically Fascinating Plantation Home and Grounds”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 December 2013

This historically fascinating example of a West Indies plantation home and grounds harkens back (in my opinion) to the pre-Industrial Age, a time when life in the heat of the South moved at a different pace than in the North. We took a leisurely tour through the home (yes, there are many stairs), then explored the grounds and outbuildings. Took lots of pictures. I didn't know about the Audubon connection to Oakley beforehand, but having seen this site, it is easy to imagine how inspired he could have been in this beautiful setting. We saw a number of plantations on our trip, and this was certainly among the very interesting and enjoyable properties we saw.
