“Lake Pedder Trout Fishing with Karen Marr”
Reviewed 6 April 2014

Lake Pedder is a substantial Hydro Electric impoundment (damming two catchments) located within the Southwest National Park. The Chalet is located at Strathgordon near Teds Beach. It offers a range of accommodation from hotel rooms to s/c cottages. The cottages have been refurbished in recent years and are reasonably priced, being close to the popular boat ramps and shore fishing spots thus making for the perfect trout fishing weekend!

My husband and I loved this place. It has a relaxing warm ambience. Susan and her lovely staff made our two day rainy stay warm, friendly and very memorable for so many reasons. Our super clean, comfortable Lake Pedder room with lake view was $140pn including continental breakfast which was plentiful and gluten free catered for. Meals at the Chalet were excellent and once again the chef accommodated gluten free requirements. The fact that the rooms did not have TV connected, we had no mobile phone/internet, no marked walking tracks and two days of almost constant rain did not detract from a great stay. It was wonderful to relax in the two comfortable lounge rooms where you could curl up and read a book near a lovely fireplace, watch TV, play billiards, chat with other guests whilst all the time keeping a watchful eye on the view otherwise you may miss a rainbow on the lake, friendly rosellas, red robin, a spotted quoll, pademelon, wallaby and beautiful mountains engulfed in fluffy white clouds. There was also a table tennis table, indoor heated swimming pool and indoor badminton court but we never got around to using these. The drive to the Chalet is on a good sealed road with lovely scenery and a short drive to the Gordon dam is an absolute must. Huge thanks to Susan and staff for your hospitality.

Room Tip: Definitely book a Lake Pedder room if you can.

You don’t travel to this part of the island for luxury accommodation and gourmet dining. It is all about the remoteness and wild beauty of the area. The rooms are basic but clean with a fridge and a good bathroom. It can get cold but the heaters quickly warm up the room. They recently lost their one analogue TV channel so none of the room TVs work. The two in the large dining area/lounge are linked to satellite and do work. There is no mobile phone reception or internet. All part of experiencing this area. No kitchen or laundry facility and nowhere else to eat. My dinner was fine but they do eat early in a canteen style room so don’t arrive late. Much of the food has an Asian slant which is probably down to the chef. None of this is meant to be critical, just a statement of the limited facilities. The welcome was very warm and the staff friendly.

This Chalet appears to be an old workers village. The rooms are very basic but excellent and clean and cheap. The location is awesome. The restaurant is very reasonable and the meals were excellent and it overlooks Lake Pedder. We were in a large group and we all loved it. This place is a must stay if you are travelling around Tassie. No mobile phone reception but that can be a bonus!!

Room Tip: A must stay if you are travelling around Tassie.

We booked a visit to Strathgordon - to get away and enjoy NATURE

We stayed at the Lake Pedder Chalet - this is not a place if you want 5 star luxury. We had a twin room - the rooms do not have A/C, phones, TV, tea/coffee making facilities (tea/coffee is available in the main dining area 24/7).

This is a place to stay and enjoy the vistas, nature, the ambiance and relax! - not stay in your room - but enjoy a drink in the bar, sit and marvel at the views or go for a WALK.

Our room was sufficient, quiet, comfortable, airy and light.

Continental breakfast was included in the price.

Dinner was available in the dining room - which we had - considering the isolated location - the meal was great! and reasonably priced.

We highly recommend a visit to the area and a stay at the lake Pedder chalet - you will not be disappointed.

I really enjoyed our one night here. The room was good quality and it was a filling continental breakfast. We were joined by a group of contractors who work on something nearby and 20-odd motor bike riders. It is not far from the Gordon Dam and it is possible to walk along the dam wall - try doing that at Sydney's Warragamba. Strathgordon is 100km from the main road and you travel through some amazing scenary and get some idea of how wild the south west of Tasmania is.

Arrived after a 70km drive, with a recommendation that rooms were plentiful. tried to call to book room but no reception on phone. were told by manager that there were rooms available but no-one to clean them, he was rude, unhelpful and no wonder the place is for sale. I even offered to change the sheets and clean the room, but was met with a NO, who appoints a person like him to manage a beautiful spot like this? He is not doing hospitality anywhere any favours. So can't comment on the rooms but the lounge area looking out onto the lake smelt musty. If this guy leaves I would consider going back purely on location, other people I spoke to (mostly other women) met with the same unhelpful, and rude attitude.

Room Tip: I wouldn't stay here until this guy has gone!
