Mount Hope Garden Cemetery is not only a sculptured final place of rest in a wonderful garden setting, it is a place of history. It includes the first memorial built in the US to honor Civil War dead. It houses Hannibal Hamlin, Lincoln's vice president. It includes a beautiful memorial to those who died and are MIA in the Korean War. It also has a wonderful memorial to the First Maine who saw action in the Civil War. Each of these contain a history lesson. Hint: Stop at the Superintendent's Office on your left as you enter past the Second Maine Memorial and pick up a "walking Tour" guide that describes the different points of interest. Most can be arrived at by vehicle as well. Also, if you have an elderly parent, take them on this journey for if they have served in the military, they will be very impressed.

Get lost here, it is a beautiful sprawling place open to the public during normal business hours and well worth checking out. Frederick Law Olmstead had his hand in the planning of the place and you can tell from the immensity of nature twined into the final resting place of many souls. Beautiful!

Mt.Hope Cemetary is the place that I go if I just need to unwind, or relax, or even do studying. There is quite a bit of different landscape as well as a nice pond that runs through the cemetary. It is a very historic place which is another reason why I like to visit!

I always take in the local cemeteries when I am in a new state. This one is a unique example of the early garden cemetery. It is on a hilly part of the town and I thought it made for a great photo opportunity. Some interesting stones here and some interesting epithaphs. A nice side trip for any taphophile.
