“Not Great for a Stopover”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 October 2012

If you stop here, make sure you have good directions; GPS did not get me there, and there was no way to live-park near the front door to unload. When I called for help, the voice mail said it was full—no answer for 30 mins. Staff was entirely indifferent to this when I arrived, and equally unconcerned in the morning at the unprepossessing breakfast. I first walked in to the "luxury" hotel to find a really loud rapper. One of the two sink faucets worked. The heat was hard to control and went from freezing to 90 degrees without warning. I needed a photocopy of my receipt, and emailed to get one, but no reply. The price ($127) was definitely way too high for the service and product. I could imagine the funk factor might appeal for those vacationing who have more time to manage funny faucets and heat and directions, but absolutely not for anyone trying to be efficient and just get a good rest. I'm pretty easy to please; this is the lowest rating I have ever given on anything.

I drove to Bangor in the evening and stayed overnight before flying out in the morning. For such a stopover, this is a good choice. It's right downtown, so a lot of restaurants and bars are available in walking distance, including next door and directly across the street.

The actual hotel is clearly old and as other reviewers have said, has "character." Service is slow and and everything looks a bit run-down. A friendly pug dog wanders around the lobby, greeting people and moving on. But even on a weekend night in the summer, it was pretty quiet and felt safe. Plus my bed was soft, the shower worked fine, and morning checkout was quick and easy, so it's exactly fine for a short overnight stay.

Old as the hills but has some character. Bar in the main lobby with 100+ beers. When you first enter the Inn and bar it looks pretty sketchy....but they were friendly. Everything in the place is ancient, slow elevators, very little ice, no pool, really no features at all. Very close to waterfront and is in walking distance to the local concert site. They offer free parking if you ask. Rooms were clean but small. Kinda high priced for what you get but excellent location for concerts. Would only stay there again for a concert!

Room Tip: Choose a room on a low level as the elevator is very slow. Get a room away from the bar as it is no...

I feel obliged to defend the Charles Inn. I am from Ireland and my wife is from Maine and we visit every year to stay with her folks. To cut a long story short, we get the bus up from Boston Airport and spend the night in Bangor. For the past few years we always stay in the Charles Inn.

To be honest a lot of the comments are accurate, the place is not exactly in the best shape. What the Charles Inn does have is character and personality. So much of American is now bland chains with the same cookie cutter experience; at the Charles Inn you get the real deal.

The building has character and history. You can imagine it in its hay day, entertaining traveling acting troupes and playing host to illicit rendezvous. The rooms are overpriced for what you get but these old buildings cost a fortune to run, look on it as part donation to an historical centre ;-)

The service is average, but that is because the lady who owns it does most of the work herself. As far as I can see she is working from 6 in the morning to after midnight every day, cut her some slack. The owner is doing her best to restore an old building that not only eats money but is subject to countless preservation restrictions. Even if you have a terrible time you still have a great story to tell your friends, ask yourself this how many times have you ever told a story about a Holiday Inn?

I also find Downtown Bangor extremely pretty and interesting. So much of America is now strip malls, it is fantastic to find a downtown area with character. There are now lots of new bars and restaurants opening downtown, the area is really coming alive. One reviewer said the downtown area was unsafe, this is nonsense, I find Bangor very safe, its Maine you are in not the Bronx.

If you want a quiet night’s sleep in a climatically perfect room then don’t say here. If you like art, history and culture and want to experience something different then give the Charles Inn a try. Go for a meal downtown, enjoy some drinks in the bars, listen to the live music, live a little!

The Charles Inn gives you a chance to experience an American that is quickly disappearing – visit now while you have the chance before it get replaced by a Burger King.

Room Tip: There have music in the bar downstairs, and there is bars in the square outside the front on the hot...

Every time I've been there I've had to wait 10+ min to even get the bartenders attention. After getting his attention I have to deal with the driest and most apathetic attitude a bartender could have. But it only gets worse. If 10+ minutes sounds rough, imagine getting forgotten about completely. Drinks are not even that good, place has a mildew smell and the people that frequent the place look like they came from the shelter a few blocks away.

The room was nice but there was no a/c we had to go out and buy a fan or 25 bucks and get an extention cord to plug it in. The tv was rom the last century and had no remote we where told they had run out of remotes. They have great in house bands right below your room that play till 1am we never had to go to the bar to hear them since you where able to hear them thru-out the hotel. The continental breakast consists of bowls of cereal bagels, frozen eggo wallfes and hard boiled eggs. To sum it all up I would have rather spent $75 in a tent for the two nights then the $250 for this room.

Matress was shot. Room smelled of mildew. The water in sink didn't work. The room was very small. Few stations on a very small TV. After one night, we decided we would camp out in the rain or sleep in the car before we would spend another minute in that dive.
I have traveled for over 40 years and this was beyond a doubt the worst room I have ever stayed in.
