Bass Harbor Campground
Reviewed 19 December 2013

We stayed here in July 2013. The campground is at the farthest end of the island, away from all the busy spots but within driving distance to everything. Reservations were efficient. Staff very friendly. Although the sites are not large you never felt you were on top of the person next door. We have a very small trailer, only 10 feet and it fit perfectly. We saw lots of pop ups also. Large motorhomes are put in a different, more open area with no trees. Sites are woodsy and the fireplaces are very welcoming and large. They have cabins which appear new but I didn't get the opportunity to see inside. They all appeared booked. Washroom facilities always clean and showers hot and clean.
We didn't use the pool as it was usually filled with children. The campground is very quiet at night and if you listened you could here the bell on the buoy out on the bay.
I would recommend this campground.

Our Scout Troop spent a wonderful week taking in the many outdoor activities that Acadia National Park has to offer. Our initial plans had us camping at another site but after several unanswered calls, letters and emails, we struck out again and came upon Bass Harbor CG. Our reservations were effortlessly made after just one phone call. We felt nothing but welcome during our entire visit including a tour of the South Bass lighthouse and play-by-play guide on how to have our own LobsterFest. A huge success complete with homemade pies, shish kabobs and a large pot of lobsters. The staff and amenities coupled with a genuine good neighbor attitude left each of us with a lifetime of great memories.

Room Tip: Unless you are going to the lighthouse, you are driving. It took us 45 minutes to drive into downto...

Sites are woodsy and though small, very appealing. Staff is very accommodating. Campground and facilities are very clean. Large RVs are separated from tents and campers are a typical mix of families and retirees. Cabins are bare-bones, but new and well kept. Restrooms and showers are very clean. Family-run on the quiet side of this busy island and on the well-established someone old-fashioned side, but in a good way. Put this campground on your short list.

Lot's of campground choices around Acadia and Bar Harbor. Bass Harbor is all the way down at the bottom of the peninsula, just down the road from the lighthouse, and off the beaten track and a away from the maddening crowds yet only a few minutes to everything in the area.

We needed a reservation on the busy Memorial Day weekend and everything was perfect with our reservation when we arrived. Zero problems throughout our entire stay. Although the campground was near capacity they gave us a couple of choices on sites and let us go take a look before picking. Lots of choices including platform camping on the not perfectly level sites. Sites are wooded and there is enough distance from other sites for a bit of seclusion and privacy. Large bathhouse was spotless and no waiting for showers.

Nice lounge area in office/shop where you can sit a spell and chat with others, get tips about local attractions, restaurants, etc. For us this was a perfect base camp for our time in the Bar Harbor/Acadia area.

We were very lucky to find a campground with some space left for the 4th of July weekend; it made me worried that this wasn't going to be a good place, however we were very pleasantly surprised by the Bass Harbor campground and had a great time.
The campsites (we were in a tent, so I'll limit my comments to those sites) all had shade, a picnic bench and a fire pit area. Some other reviewers commented that the sites were too close together, but we didn't feel like this was the case. Hot showers were free (unlike other places we looked at), and dogs were allowed. The pool and rec room seemed great for people with kids.
The women running the place were very friendly and helpful, and assisted us with information on the free island shuttle (which stops right at the entrance), and getting a park ticket.
This is on the quieter side of the island, and quite far from bar harbor, but is perfect if you are looking for a quieter stay. I would definitely recommend this and would stay again.

Room Tip: the campsites along the row where the 120's are seem ideal, and we were very happy with our spot...

We visited this campground in August 2012, while on a trip to Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park. I was lucky to have found this one, because it seemed like other campgrounds in the area were sold out, or too expensive, or you had to pay to take a shower. There were plenty of trees for shade and privacy, although the paths to drive down were pretty narrow. The bathrooms were always clean when I went in there, and they were in walking distance from our campsite. Another plus was that even though we were on the edge of the island, we seemed to be pretty close to Acadia! The staff was nice, and seemed very helpful!

On August 8th I contacted Bass harbor Campground to reserve 2 cabins for a family vacation. I did the reservation by phone and paid a deposit with a charge card. We were coming to camp on August 25th. On August 10 I learned that our granddaughter had to have emergency surgery and asked to cancel our reservation. At that time the people at the campground told me that they had a 21 day cancellation policy and refused to return my money. They are disputing the refund to my charge card and I have lost $500. if this is such a nice place why can't they rent a cabin with two weeks notice? I was shocked by the lack of concern for my family situation
