Over the past winter the Vinery transformed into the peninsula's first brew pub. The son of the owners of Arborvine Restaurant and his partner brew craft beer in Brooklin at their Deep Water Brewing Company and serve it at the restaurant along side of an affordable menu with selections that are more sophisticated than usual pub fare. Blue Hill's readiness for a brew pub was confirmed when they ran out of beer within the first few weeks! They are now brewing frantically and should be restocked by the time you arrive...but you could call ahead to make sure.
The menu offers good sized appetizers from $4-10. Selections include salads, calamari with chutney, baked pretzel, steak fries roasted in duck fat, wings and mussels. Entrees range from $8-15. There are burgers, tacos, ribs, ravioli, hanger steak and nightly specials. We tried the calamari and a side salad and the pub burger on our first visit and a pulled pork sandwich and chicken tacos on our second. All the meals were made from fresh ingredients, well-prepared, and accented with culinary surprises. For example, the calamari appetizer was not fried. It was expertly cooked and served with a delicious chef-made mango/mint chutney.
The wait staff are efficient and understand the menu and beer/wine options. The atmosphere is bright and casual. There is seating in the bar and on the enclosed patio. The Vinery is located behind the Arborvine [a much more elegant and expensive option] on upper Main Street in the village of Blue Hill.
