“SPI=Simply Positively Incredible”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

This past weekend I had dinner at the Spruce Point Inn’s fine dining restaurant, 88. My table was seated next to the window, overlooking Boothbay Harbour as the sun was setting. A very romantic spot…even if I was with my mother! My server Shauna, was delightful and accommodating. As soon as we sat down, Shauna inquired whether or not we would like a coupe of cremant, which of course, we said yes to! The oysters, salad and beef, for me, were amazing and done to perfection. My mom had the spinach soup and eggplant lasagna, which were a taste buds dream. The whole dining room, was comfortable and elegant without being stuffy; the wait staff accommodating and efficient without being bothersome. The only downside to SPI was that we weren’t staying the night…but this only gives me the opportunity to go back and really experience it. They say SPI stands for Spruce Point Inn, however…I believe that it should stand for Simply Positively Incredible

We loved this place! This is a family-friendly place where your kids can go to the free arcade while you sit and drink your coffee and read a book! It's well kept and quaint. Our 11 year old and 7 year old loved having a little bit of independence to ride the free bikes or play volleyball by themselves and meet other kids around the resort. We took advantage of the free kayaks, paddleboards and harbor boat ride into town. My kids collected sea glass for hours. The food was great--and I didn't feel like we were held captive by high resort prices. I thought everything was reasonable. Often there was free water at the S'mores pit each night and free coffee was in the lodge throughout the day. There was even a washer and dryer in the community room that you could use. We spent one day in the small harbor town and one day walking on the large rocks on the coast over at Ocean Point (5 minutes away). All in all...this was a great trip and a great place. I think a lot of families come back to this place, and I could see why!

After reading others reviews we had high expectations of SPI. And with the $600 rate we were paying for our little Pelican cottage we certainly expected more. The issues were small, but many. This is not the Broadmoor of Maine, nor a place that necessarily prides itself on service.

the good:
Very cute little cottage. It still has old parts of the original cottage which lend character such as doorknobs, antiques.
Fun kid activities- saltwater pool, heated pool, s'mores, bikes, heated pool, life size chess, ping
pong.
Beautiful setting on a private peninsula.
Pleasant check-in

The not so good:
Cottage had no water view and is cramped between 2 large new buildings. Again, for $600 night we expected one.
The heated pool was cool, not 82 degrees as we had been promised, they were out of pool towels and the pool isn't made of tile but of some strange wallpaper vinyl type material that is pulling up in areas and feels like you are walking on electric wires. Strange but true !
Wifi must get overloaded in the evenings bc it's impossible to get a signal that is fast enough.
No cell coverage which is fine but the in cottage phone doesn't work either.
Cute bathrooms but microscopic.
Refrigerator from the 50s? Not in the good retro sense but in the sense that it is a bit rusty and doesn't cool....
My father who is 79 walks but with some difficulty. On our walk to the pool 3 employees drove by on golf carts and not one stopped to offer him assistance. Not absolutely necessary but surprising lack of attention to service.
We tried to reserve the on property 88 restaurant but was told they were booked for our party of 5 so we ate at Bogies which is next to it. Ironically we could see a 5 pax table during our meal which was located in 88 and was empty during our whole 2 hr meal, as was 88 itself.
Food at Bogies was delicious, fabulous steak but we could never find our waiter and the manager was condescending and very unpleasant.
And - no included breakfast! Again, for the price tag we were hoping.....

This is a beautiful property but I don't think the owners want to invest in modernizing the basics, nor in service. Too bad. No need to return.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for reviewing your overnight experience at Spruce Point Inn this past Saturday night. I am sorry that your stay was just average this time. With three adults and two children, I can see how the Pelican, two-bedroom Woodlandview Cottage, could have been a bit too cozy for you. Especially since you added a roll-away bed to the twin bedded bedroom.

If you should decide to return, and I hope that you do, I would recommend the three bedroom Tanager or Cardinal Cottage. If you prefer the Oceanview, please consider the Starboard or Osprey Cottages or perhaps two adjoining Lodge rooms with living area.

As you indicate in the reviews, Spruce Point Inn is highly regarded for attentive and friendly service and we work VERY hard to maintain this level of satisfaction. I regret that we did not recognize and offer to transport your father that day. It’s our job to anticipate these needs. We will discuss ways to ensure that we do NOT miss this opportunity in the future.

The dining venues at Spruce Point are among the best in the region and reservations are required for 88 and highly recommended for Bogies. I am sorry that we could not accommodate you that evening in 88 but I am very pleased that you enjoyed Bogies. It did appear as though a table was open for 5 guests in 88 at the time you arrived for dinner. However, a number of reservations had just been seated. Sometimes we hold back a table when this occurs to ensure good service. Had you arrived earlier or been willing to wait, we would have been pleased to accommodate you in 88.

When it rains, the outdoor pools can drop in temperature. I know that the engineering team dials up the pool heater in expectation of a rainy day, but sometimes, it’s just not enough. I am sorry that we caught you at the wrong time.

Our seasonal pools, salt and fresh water, do have a custom liner. I have never heard of electrical wires running through them. I will certainly take a look at that.

We are in the process of increasing our WI-FI capabilities to accommodate the surge in guests streaming video on Amazon Prime, Netflix, and the like. Suddenly, this represents 93% of the usage of our wireless system and it's caused the system to slow during peak hours. The WI-FI project will be complete in a week or so. In the interim, we now have available for our guests Verizon Jetpack “hot spot” devices at no charge.

In closing, again, I regret that your stay was just average this time. If you are ever in the area again from Colorado --- ergo the Broadmoor comparison?? --- please let me know.

Sincerely,

Angelo DiGiulian

SPI is a great Inn that has an amazing location. The Inn is well kept and very clean as well, but for my wife and I, I think the highlight was how accommodating the staff was. Staff generally seem to LOVE working there! This translates to a comfortable feel for all visitors. This doesn't happen by mistake, it is a well managed resort. The Captain on the Resorts complimentary water shuttle, our Housekeeper, and Heidi the Restaurant Supervisor were all above average.

Ben at the Front Desk as excellent. Here's why; Upon checking in, as we approached the desk, he greeted me by name. huh? "Hello Mr. XXXXXXX!" What? When I asked, he explained he had reviewed the list of check in's and saw our name. Then I had my businesses name on my shirt(pretty small, so he had to be looking) as I approached the desk, and then he was able to deduce it quickly. Makes perfect sense, but that is a level of service you only find in the best places and definitely in the exceeds expectation category.
The General Manager, Cindy Mastrella and her team, will make you comfortable during your stay! Thanks and nice job!

We stayed in the Balsam Lodge and were very happy with the room and the view. A return trip is already in the planning for next year. The staff was very helpful and courteous, which made the stay very enjoyable.

We just returned from a 3 night stay at the Spruce Point Inn - my only regret is that we didn't stay longer! We were traveling with our 2 boys, ages 8 and 12. Beautiful setting, casually elegant yet also a place that 2 young boys can go off on their own safely and have fun. Complimentary fishing poles, kayaks, shuffleboard, life size chess, hiking trails, 'smores at night, etc. made this the perfect family vacation spot. Rooms were clean and very comfortable - - we are very picky about where we stay and only stay at high end resort properties and though not fancy, we felt very comfortable here. The entire resort has a very relaxed, peaceful Maine vibe. Grounds were very well kept. Beautiful gardens throughout and particularly along the inviting front porch where you could sit with a book in an andirondeck chair in the shade and look out over the water and read. Ate at the more casual restaurant, Bogie's, one night and all of our meals were well prepared and delicious. Staff was very accommodating and welcoming. Lobby feels like an old Maine Inn - tasteful, yet homey and inviting. Highly recommend. Hope to return someday!

We had a wonderful experience staying at the Spruce Point Inn for three nights in August. The inn is not in town, but that is an advantage if you are looking for a restful retreat. The inn provides shuttle service into town so you do not need to drive and park in town if you do not want to. We were upgraded to a room on the second floor of the inn with a spectacular water view. The sunsets each night were beautiful. The grounds are beautifully maintained; we enjoyed walking around and enjoying the flowers and the views. We had breakfasts and dinners each day at the inn and found the food service to be excellent. They have a kitchen garden and you can recognize the freshness of the produce. We enjoyed our spa treatments and sitting on the deck in the spa area. The staff was very helpful. They recognized when we occasionally needed some help and were very accommodating.

Room Tip: Inn building does not have an elevator, but stairway is wide and manageable for someone who is able...
