“A very friendly place with a wonderful breakfast and sights”
Reviewed 24 August 2008

We have just returned from a one week stay at the Topside Inn in Boothbay Harbor, ME. It was a wonderful vacation with everything, at the Topside Inn, that we needed. Ed & Brian have just done over all the bathrooms in the out building. The room we have was plenty big enough for our party of three adults. They are very fussy about keeping the rooms clean and neat. Do not worry about bugs here! Housekeeping is excellent.

Each morning they provided a gourmet breakfast and never repeated the fare twice. For starters there is fresh cut fruit of every kind along with Brian's own special gronola. They have a variety of breads, cereal, coffee & tea. The entree is different everyday. We had french toast, eggs bendict, Maine blueberry pancakes and more. All the meals were very good and a nice start to our day.

Sights abound with incredible views of the harbor. The village of Boothbay Harbor has a variety of small shops and plenty of restrauants. Ed or Brian have a great knowledge of the area and will help you find whatever adventure you would like. We worked out a four mile walk around the harbor that we would do every morning. Of course the sea air in Maine is very clear and adds to our walk. If you like to be active outdoors, this is the place.

We have already booked for next year.

Stayed at the Topside Inn for two nights towards the end of our Canada/New England vacation. We booked the place via their excellent website.
We just had an outstanding stay at the Topside. The place has three buildings: The orginal house, and two more modern outbuildings. We stayed in room 14, which is one of 8 rooms found in one of the outbuildings. As indicated from their website, Room 14 has amazing views of Boothbay harbor. It's a clean, well-apportioned room with windows all over the place. Decks out the front and back.
The operation is both professional and comfortable. Brian and Ed were very accomodating. They know everything about the Boothbay area, and were gracious and helpful with our questions.
The Topside was full both nights we stayed, but we never got the feeling that we were crowded or had to wait for anything. Breakfast was outstanding and held in a beautful sunroom looking over the harbor. We loved sitting on the adirondacks on the front lawn and watching the boats. The other guests were polite and interesting people. The place was very quiet and peaceful at night, we both slept great. The first night was foggy and we could hear the foghorn for the harbor gently going off in the distance...you can't get more "Maine seacoast" than that!
The town of Boothbay Harbor has lots of shps, galleries and restaurants. It's an easy walk down the hill ftom the Topside. We had a great meal at the Tugboat Restaurant. There's also a nice scenic drive you can take out to the oceanfront....Brian and Ed can tell you how to access it.
One downside aspect to our visit, and it has nothing to do with the Topside. Our weekend coincided with a motorcycle rally at Boothbay called "Stoney's Run". What this means is that a hundred or so motorcyclists show up and hang out for awhile. I get the idea this was considered sorta quaint a few years ago, but it has now grown to be a bunch of riders, some of whom drink it up and then scream their noisy bikes all over town. To say this event doesn't fit the culture of Boothbay Harbor is an understatement. The storeowners whose stores we were in were not happy about it at all....maybe the barowners are, who knows? I think the town council or whatever runs Boothbay Harbor may want to see if "Stoney's Run" can run somewhere else.
But, again that is not in any way a negative about the Topside. Indeed, it sits up on hill overlooking the town, so it is quiet and
removed from the downtown area...and yet just quick walk to get to it.
We will gladly stay at the Topside again, this is simply one of the finest, most confortable B+B Inns we have ever experienced.

  • Liked — Great rooms, great views, great service
  • Disliked — Nothing, but "Stoney's Run" doesn't fit the character of Boothbay Harbor.

We loved the Topside Inn!

It's located on a hill overlooking town with views of the harbor. It's a very short walk to town.

The rooms are a nice size with great pillows, towels and bathrooms. We stayed in room 20.

The breakfasts are so good. We actually skipped a brunch at a wedding to eat the breakfast at the Inn.

The only downside for us is that the inn and area is extremely quiet at night. However, many people would consider this an advantage, and it did not dampen our enthusiasm for this, our first bed and breakfast experience.

My husband and I first stayed here 4 years ago, and liked it so much we stayed here again in July for 2 nights. It was just as good as we remebered. Nice rooms, good views, less than 5 minute walk to town, and great breakfast (particularly the granola). Brian, one of the owners, is very friendly and helpful.

We stayed in room 19, which has a partial view of the water, but is set further back. It is also at the end of the second level, so the room is on the corner and gets a lot of light. However, the best room is 14, which we stayed in the first time we went and has a great view of the harbor. 14 is in the building closer to the harbor. Both 19 and 14 are in buildings separate from the main inn.

For dining, you have to go to the Boathouse Bistro. Fantastic tapas style menu, as well as great pomegranate blueberry sangria. About a 5-10 minute walk from the inn.

My husband and I and my sister and her husband recently stayed at Topside Inn for two nights and had a wonderful stay. We discovered Topside Inn via Tripadvisor and were not disappointed. From the minute we arrived (the Inn’s directions are excellent), we were impressed by the welcome offered to us by Brian and Ed, the Inn itself and its numerous amenities, and the incredible views. We stayed in Room #7 in the Main House; the room was very comfortable with good light, quiet, had great linens and towels, wonderful view, and a clean bathroom with good water pressure. My sister and her husband stayed in Room #14 and it also was very comfortable with a wonderful deck to enjoy the bay view. The common rooms were welcoming, beautifully decorated, and touches such as coffee and tea throughout the day, wonderful homemade cookies in the afternoon, and glasses and a refrigerator for guest use were very thoughtful. Breakfasts were a treat and having the option of several cereals (the homemade granola is excellent), fruit salad, homemade muffins and rolls in addition to a hot breakfast offering each morning (pancakes and a frittata) were delicious. It is also nice that the dining area consists of several individual tables rather than one large communal table.

Every detail of the Inn has been addressed to make guests feel comfortable and welcome. The inn provides plenty of separate areas to relax and its gardens are also beautiful. Brian and Ed provided excellent restaurant suggestions and were always accessible, even if they weren’t actually onsite. It was nice that they did not hover around their guests yet they were always available if needed. Their care and attention to the Inn and its guests are top notch and they make it look effortless – that’s no small feat. We will definitely return to the Inn and highly recommend Topside Inn.

The best B&B we ever stayed at. The beds were perfect. The room was clean with a nice porch facing the bay. We saw lots of warblers & other birds. The gardens they have are very pretty. Breaksfast was perfect. There was fresh fruit salad, homemade blueberry muffins, homemade granola & plain vanilla yogurt. They had a special wheat tortilla wrap with eggs& bacon. The gentlemen that checked us in walked us to our room & answered all of our questions including the best places to eat in Booothbay. They have tubs & showers with good water pressure & lots of hot water. We don't generally stay anywhere more than 150 dollars, but the extra money was well worth it. We would stay there again if we ever go to that beautiful area.
