This was our first trip to Boothbay Harbor, and Brown’s turned out to be the perfect choice. Located on the ‘quiet’ side of the harbor, it’s just a 20 minute walk to the busy commercial area where the bulk of the restaurants, shops and docks are located.

Because it was so late in the season (the weekend before Brown’s closes for the winter), even though our room was on the first floor we still had an unobstructed view of the harbor – I’d assume that in the high season you’d have a limited view because of the docks located directly in front of the rooms.

The bathroom is tiny – the toilet and tub/shower in one room, the sink just outside the door. This worked well for the two of us. The king-sized bed was extremely comfortable. The room itself was clean, neat, and of a very good size, and opened directly onto a balcony overlooking the harbor which was furnished with chairs and an end table (the balconies run the length of the building – each room has one).

Even though it was autumn, there were flowers everywhere – the landscaping must be spectacular in the summer. The boardwalk between the hotel and docks had rocking and deck chairs available – surely popular in season.

There’s no assigned parking, but the lot is quite large. There’s an elevator to the 2nd and 3rd floors, and an on-site restaurant. Directly across from the office was a cozy room where coffee was always available - it has a beautiful harbor view, large TV, gas fireplace, books and magazines, and a computer with printer (wifi is available in the rooms, but this is handy if you didn’t pack yours).

We had breakfast twice and dinner once at the restaurant. Dinner was fine. They seemed to specialize in lobster (pretty much everywhere seemed to – it is, after all, Maine) which neither of us eat, so maybe that would’ve been a better choice. Breakfast was fabulous, and a wonderful start to each day. I had the pancakes one morning – fluffy with a crisp butter edge on each, and French toast the following morning – just a hint of cinnamon. My companion had eggs over easy – they were perfect with the yolks liquid and the whites cooked.

Everyone we dealt with was pleasant, efficient and knowledgeable. Guess this is why they’ve been in business for over 50 years!

Room Tip: During the summer season I'd recommend a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor for unobstructed views

Boothbay Harbor is a favorite of ours, and we discovered Brown's Wharf Inn three years ago. As Steve, the travel reviewer, pointed out, it is not a Ritz or Marriott, or Hampton Inn--thank goodness! We have traveled extensively in the US and Europe, and we do not seek out basic "Highway 'Off-Ramp' motor inns, and it more than fit our bill. It is a family owned and operated, comfortable inn with delightful views from every room of either the full harbor or a cove. Sitting on the roomy balcony overlooking the cove, the church and the Boothbay Lobster Wharf is about as relaxing as it gets. We found our room very clean and furnished comfortably, with good lighting for reading. The downside, as others have mentioned, is the tiny bathroom. The restaurant is very good, with excellent service--try the blueberry pancakes. We will be back to Boothbay and Brown's!

As a travel reviewer, I try desperately to discribe precisely what one will find at a given location. Browns features an excellent restaurant, decent staff, with quite modest room accommodations.

Boothbay is equal in part to Brown's Wharf Inn, an older well worn, day tripper resort town and Motor Motel. The beauty of Bootbay dining is that each eating establishment serves the same menu, so no time need be lost in hunting a really great new spot for dinner. The spot you dine tonight will be most identical to where you dined last night, Brown's being no exception. However Brown's dining staff will try harder to please and the fare will not disappoint.

If as a traveler you normally seek very basic Highway "Off - Ramp", Motor Motel accommodations, then Brown's will fill minimal needs, and will fit your bill. Brown's is not a Ritz, Marriott, or better Hampton Inn. This is a 30 years old drive up, three story motor motel from the 1960's i.e. Worn at the edges and in need of a good cleaning behind the ears.

We ourselves had to request a room re-cleaning and Browns staff immediately complied and apologized for the rooms condition with dirty floors, bathroom, carpets and mold in the airconditioning vents. Mold in aircon vents should be a serious concern for any traveler.

With that 1960's architecture comes a tiny bathroom 24 inches wide at the sink, and 36 inches deep. Well worn carpets, basic aircon, and uninspiring 1960 Holiday Inn furnishings.

We may not revisit Brown's but I'm sure many laid back travelers on a tight budget will return again and again.

We loved staying here. Room and view were great. Our only problem was at dinner one night. The food was outstanding but the service was less than acceptable. We spoke to the manager to explain not complain. She agreed with us and not only comped the meal but gave us breakfast the next day. That was above and beyond. I would definitely recommend staying here.

Doing our research on trip advisor for Brown's Wharf Inn, Boothbay Harbor, Me. turned out to be a wonderful experience. Everything was wonderful from our first greeting. Our hotel room the perfect size, the view from our balcony, Brown's Wharf restaurant, all the staff everywhere on the grounds and the beautiful grounds itself. Only thing you will hate is when you have to leave.

Room Tip: All rooms on the waterfront. All floors appear to be enjoyable.
