“Not Impressed”
Reviewed 25 September 2013

I was surprised that the reviews on Trip Advisor were so good for this restaurant - I was thoroughly not impressed. I would give this restaurant good ratings for ambience and service, but the food was definitely average. I liked the cedar planked salmon but the green beans (as the vegetable side of the night) were steamed with no seasoning and came out lukewarm and the twice baked potato was also lukewarm to the point the melted cheese on the top had congealed into a stiff covering. My father's lobster sauté was bland, again with lukewarm potato and green beans. I also had the French onion soup, which normally should burn your mouth, was not that hot. The flavor was okay but I've had better. With the other seafood places in the area, you can find someplace better.

“Excellent eating experience!”
Reviewed 20 September 2013

We ate dinner twice and breakfast once as we stayed two nights at Brown's Wharf Inn. We hardly ever eat at the same twice when we travel, but the first night was so good we returned the next night for the twin lobsters, escargo, and lettuce wedge. Service, atmosphere and price--- FIRST CLASS!

“Enough lobster already.....”
Reviewed 15 September 2013

We had four full days of lobster and had to come up for air. Well, it just so happens that Thursday night is turkey, gravy, mashed and stuffing night! We sat and watched a full house cracking and shucking with their bibs on and our little corner table looked like Thanksgiving. Great spot for anything but if you need a break later in the week (Friday/Sat is Prime Rib Night) this is the spot. Their twofer lobster deal is great also.

“Lobster - harbor views - sunsets”
Reviewed 11 September 2013

We try to visit Brown's at least once each summer when we're in Boothbay. The food is very good, and deck seating places you literally next to the huge boats that are docked there. Add views of the harbor and spectacular sunsets, and you just have to relax and enjoy. As they don't take reservations, we opted for a brief wait in the bar so we could be outside. The bartender was cheerful and friendly, and it was obvious that many of the patrons were locals who knew her and knew each other; the atmosphere was quite convivial.
We began with a chicken liver pate that was smooth and full-flavored; when we requested crackers as well as bread, they appeared immediately. Having had twin lobsters before and found them to be excellent (and quite a bargain), we opted for Lobster Saute (lazy man's lobster) and shrimp risotto. It happened to be the time when lobsters are shedding and re-growing shells, and we even had the choice of hard-shell or soft-shell (a little less meat but sweeter and more tender). The lobster, baked potato and pencil-thin asparagus were excellent, and the lobster was the star of the dish, not drowning in butter. The shrimp risotto was all that a risotto should be, creamy and al dente, with good-sized shrimp. Good risotto can take a little while, but it's worth waiting for. Key lime pie big enough to share finished our meal with a light, tart taste that was just perfect after the richness of the seafood.
We'd love to try a whole bunch of places in Boothbay, but I think Brown's has us hooked!
A final special note for this visit - as we sat on the deck, there was a table of 8 or 10 directly inside; each time we looked in, we saw the bride in her lovely summer gown, with her groom and their families. We wish them well.

“Only average at most”
Reviewed 10 September 2013

A huge dining venue with multiple rooms which was hardly one quarter full on a Saturday 9/7/13 at 7:00 PM. It is old, worn, and uninviting. The staff outnumbers the diners and none of them appear to be too interested.

We ordered prosecco as a cocktail, which was labeled BRUT, when tasted it was a sweet as soda pop and had no effervessence. When we told the waiter it was not acceptable he was totally perplexed. Waiters offer a wine to a customer to determine if it is what we expected and when told it isn't, one doesn't expect his response to be "I'll need to talk to my manager." After sending the prosecco back, we were unable to find an acceptable wine on the short value priced wine list and passed on any drinks.
We then ordered steamed mussels in broth and although the shellfish was rope grown and clean, the broth was absolutely tasteless. We also ordered roasted garlic which was drenched in oil, had too few pieces of crostini, and had a mound of dry tasteless olive tapenade. The pan seared scallop entrée was properly cooked but then drenched in a butter sauce with again no discernible seasoning. My husband had the Haddock special which was okay but not memorable. Desert was Blueberry crisp which although full of berries, was not crisp. The crumbs were so finely ground and lacked any butter or sugar to hold them together and the desert normally served hot enough to melt ice cream served on top, didn't melt anything. The crisp was served at room temperature. I will admit that this was the lowest price dinner of three in Boothbay on this weekend, but it was completely not worth any return or recommendation.
