Description: Schooners, formerly Muddy Rudder, is a family owned business purchased by the Kessock family in mid-2011. Since that time its reputation has steadily grown as the best seafood restaurant in the area.In February 2012, the name was changed to Schooners Seafood & Steakhouse. In addition to our Maine Seafood, we now offer a unique selection of steak options.Every effort is made to purchase only fresh products whenever possible. For example, ALL of our meat entrees are fresh, never frozen, aged in our cooler, and hand-cut on site. Even our hamburgers and chicken entrees are fresh as well. Our patrons are also able to enjoy the finest view in the city; our large windows and outside deck overlook the beautiful Penibscot River just a few yards away.Try us. You’ll taste the difference.

got a flier in the newspaper---free dinner on birth day and prime rib!
went on wife's birthday and we asked what can she get free??.....the waiter said "anything on the menu"....surprised at that one....being a sat eve they had prime rib as well on the menu...I had a "16 oz " slab of the finest prime rib I ever had--...and by far the best prime rib in the bangor/brewer, bar harbor area.....and to top it all of the sunset over the Penobscot was spectacular...

“Location location location”

The best thing about this restaurant is that it's perched along the river between Bangor and Brewer. All they have to do is not screw up the service or food. Food was pretty good but it took quite a while to get seated.

“Just right!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2013

Business trip with hubby. Local seafood for him and steak for me was our goal. GPS and hotel guide sent us to Muddy Rudder which turned out to be Schooners. Was just right... Met our "goal" with baked lobster stuffed with crab and NY strip (cooked perfectly to my requested medium rare). Plus we enjoyed a scenic river view and a personable server named Caitlin. Very pleasant. $70 dinner for two including cocktails and dessert (peanut butter pie with a delicious nut crust!)

“Went looking for Eagle and found a great Schooner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2013 via mobile

On our way back from four months in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. We always stop the first night in Brewer and go to the Eagles Nest restaurant. As we drove by the Eagle on our way to the motel we noticed that it was packed (Fri. Night) and would have to wait several hours. We decided to give Schooners a try.
It started off on the wrong foot. We went to the lounge for a drink while we waited for a table. We were lost and overlooked. However, we flagged down a server. She more than made up for the lapse. Got us our drinks right away and arranged a table quickly.
The food was outstanding. I had the seafood medley it was great. The price was also reasonable.
We will be back!!

“Return visit was as expected”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2013

This was our second visit to Schooners in a year. We travel to Orono to see family and Schooner's was recommended last spring. Enjoyed our meal then and again this past weekend.

We were a party of eight, had no trouble getting a reservation, and were seated promptly. Our waitress was a little difficult to understand (high-pitched voice and soft spoken) but she worked at making herself understood to the hard of hearing in our party and her service was flawless.

The menu appears to have downsized since our May visit. Apparently, they are focusing on doing a few things really well. At the rate lobster dinners were flying out of the kitchen, I'd say they have that figured out. Our meals were all very good, nicely presented and cooked as ordered. Those of us who wanted wine with our meal were able to find a satisfying choice from their wine list, which clearly was created to pair with the food offerings.

I gave them 4 stars instead of five because they were out of salmon tips and steak tips and because there is no half-star option. I wanted to give a 4.5. With the smaller menu, these omissions left the impression of limited choices and that the kitchen was struggling with planning. Once alternate choices had been selected, the evening moved along without a hitch.

The bridge repair work going on immediately adjacent the restaurant doesn't help with the view or access. We were fortunate to be with people who knew the area so the detour wasn't a problem for us. The parking lot was reaching capacity on a Saturday night; Schooner's is doing plenty right. We look forward to dining there again.
