We received a very warm welcome from all the staff when we arrived at The Stag and started our evening by enjoying a relaxed pre-dinner drink in front of the fire. Our food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious and the staff were attentive but not overbearing throughout the evening. I had a medium-rare steak which was cooked to perfection and had a taste of someone else’s cheesecake having not left enough room for my own - a silly mistake on my part as it was mouth-watering. Our party was not big enough to enjoy the private dining area but we will definitely be bringing friends back to experience this as it looked lovely. All-in-all a really lovely evening at a really lovely restaurant which I have a feeling we will be returning to again and again.

Booked a table for 4 for midweek dinner. Some of us wanted to order a burger and were told that normally you had to arrange in advance to order from the "bar" menu as that menu was not available for dinner. They did make an exception this time and allowed us to order a burger. I ordered the ribeye steak done rare from the main menu and at £23 had high hopes. I was very disappointed - the steak was over-cooked and dry. By contrast we went to the Kings Arms in Tring last night where I had a surf and turf which came with of steak, calamari, prawns, salad and hand-cut fries and cost £18.50 and was cooked correctly and was very good value for money. If The Stag stopped trying to be a high class restaurant and rather served simple wholesome good value food I would eat there at least twice a month being a Mentmore resident.

I am sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your meal at the Stag. We will always look to replace someone's meal if we are notified of any issues when we " meal check " which is normally a few minutes after food is served. We would normally also ask if meals where enjoyed when clearing plates and the final bill adjusted if something was amiss - I will follow up with staff to ensure these checks are undertaken . I apologise for the lack of clarity around the " bar " versus " restaurant " dining options , I have made some changes to the website to hopefully avoid such situations in future .

Our first visit since Graeme & Gary took over in November and they've taken their successful formula from their last place into The Stag. A warm welcome, attentitive staff, nice decor and great food. The flatbreads & Nachos are a must! Highly recommended

Group of 8 of us went to The Stag for dinner having heard it was under new ownership. What a transformation, lovely decor, so welcoming and cosy but with some quirky features added in.
We were offered the 'Private Dining' area as we were a group of 8. What a lovely area, secluded but still with te buzz of the other diners. Beautifully decorated, lovely big table and wonderfully comfortable chairs, all added to making the evening special.
The service was great, not rushed but not waiting to see staff. Any needs anticipated before we could ask. The menu is great, varied and something for everyone, even the fussiest in our group found more than enough to tempt them. Every dish was beautifully presented, extremely tasty and lovely. Main courses were cooked to perfection and again a lovely varied selection. Make sure you leave room for desert though, the panna cotta is to die for, as is the cheesecake! The cheeseboard was great, not your run of the mill cream crackers, some really tasty artisan items on it.
All in all a perfect evening, the new owner was sure to introduce himself to every customer and was very welcoming, making sure everyone had everything they needed. A proper host, and the staff were as attentive, very professional.
Look forward to our next visit.

Recent change of management. It’s always been a comfortable pub. It looks great and has a welcoming open fire. Staff are really friendly but it’s a shame that they changed the cocktail bar for yet more restaurant seating (one large table) because there are only 4 tables in the other bar for if you’re meeting up just for drinks and chat.

Thankyou for taking the time to leave a review - as you have mentioned the Stag is now under new management and we advertise ourselves as a restaurant with lounge bar and not a pub . The addition of the larger table in our private dining area reflects the demand for more dining areas at the Stag. If people wish to come just for a drink they are more than welcome in the lounge bar. I don't recall anyone having to stand whilst drinking mid- week ?
