If, like us, you prioritize a great beach above almost all else, Secrets Maroma Beach will occupy a spot on your go-to vacation spots in Mexico. We just returned from a 10 day stay at SMB July 8 thru 18. We go twice a year to an adults-only resort in Mexico. Having gotten tired of rocky/seaweedy beaches, we decided to spend about 1/3 more than our typical budget and try Secrets. Mission definitely accomplished! We spent more time in the ocean on this trip than on the last 10 put together, due to the excellent quality of the beach and water. The hotel puts a lot of effort into policing the beach and it shows. Little seaweed, lots of walkable beach in both directions, unlimited towels, great beach drinks (really!), marvelous scenery, lots o' cabanas, and comfortable beach chairs with pads make their beach the best we have seen in Mexico. The hotel also scores well in the food category. We are trained to want decent, not great food...just so it's not terrible. SMB serves really good food at all but the Mexican restaurant. We thought the French restaurant was particularly good along with the breakfast and lunch buffet restaurant...consistently good quality that even foodies would appreciate.
Negatives: There were some, but definitely did not outweigh being on the best beach in Mexico:
Nighttime entertainment sure could have used a live band/dance option. We have gotten used to being able to sit outside, hear a live band after dinner, smoke a cigar and dance type of venue. Adults only resorts like Valentin and Excellence Riviera Cancun just to mention two, have those options and we look forward to that. We asked about SMB nighttime nighttime music before we went and yes, they do have it. However, the venue is the hotel lobby/bar and ends around 9:30-no smoking. We also found our room and the resort in general to be borderline warm at night. Being from Fort Worth, we appreciate and enjoy GOOD air conditioning. We were also really surprised at the wedding party/honeymoon-heavy emphasis at SMB. As mentioned earlier, we had to really dig down deep into our pockets to pay that 1/3 more for this resort compared to say El Dorado or Excellence. To pony up that kind of fundage caused us to assume that we'd run into a mostly 50-60 crowd at SMB-definitely not the case. We guessed the average age at SMB at about 35. This resort has a significant number of the 20 and 30-something entitled, Daddy's Money crowd-most of them taking part in a destination wedding that they are most definitely not paying for. All of this makes for an atmosphere that is not necessarily positive. We are in the 55-60 demographic and some of the entitled, immature behavior we saw from young adults was a turn off and reminded us of the old days going to places like the Oasis on the hotel strip in Cancun.
I'll finish with a couple of other positives...room service was always fast and reliably good. We also enjoyed the balcony that seemed to be in each room. We spent lots of romantic evenings on our balcony, listening to our own music (quietly) and smoking while looking at beautiful moons. We will continue to go to SMB, but we will also continue going to other adults-only resorts, depending on budget, time of year and mood.
One last thing... for the first time, we utilized Mitch Toren from TripGuy.com. We were most satisfied with his expertise. In particular, we appreciated private transport that he arranged through Lomas Travel. On our return flight, the driver escorted us in and walked us through the check-in. We felt like VIPs and never had an easier check-in at the airport. Mitch is already booking our return in February!
