We just returned from a three night trip. We wanted a small, intimate resort where we could completely relax and be well taken care of. We got what we came for. They have something like 130 rooms. So rarely are there even 200 guests on property. We found the resort very well staffed with incredibly warm and friendly people in all departments. With that kind of staff to guest ratio, you feel like you really matter. This isn't a vacation-factory. It's more like a vacation boutique.
The food was outstanding. We had several conversations with Jonathan, the executive chef who has been the El Dorado Maroma about a month now. He's a personable and accomplished international chef who knows how to create inspired menus and attentively manage a culinary staff. We ate at every restaurant, including room service. All was top-notch with wildly fresh ingredients. This isn't a pizza and hot dog kind of place. They'll make you something special if those are the only kinds of things you'll eat. But if you'd rather be impressed by well-prepared classics, and also enjoy fresh new dishes, you can't go wrong here.
Worth noting...this isn't one of those wild-and-crazy spring break themed places with body shots of liquor and blaring dance music until 4AM. If that's what you seek, you might look elsewhere. There is usually a small party crowd around the pool here, but it's not out of control. If you want to have a few drinks with friends, or if you want to enjoy quiet beach time, this small resort offers both with minimal effort to find it.
And pay attention to the daily activity schedules. Or else just walk around (not a huge place, just keep your eyes open). You'll find all kinds of things from tequila sampling to volleyball. One night, they put up a band stage in the pool, surrounded the pool area with linen clothed tables and candles, and had an excellent Italian buffet. We didn't know it was going on until we looked out our balcony and saw it. And it was my most memorable meal of the trip.
If you feel like doing something off property, talk to Luis with Lomas Travel. Good guy. He's based right there on-property. He can set up almost anything for you. That costs a little extra, but very reasonable for what you'll receive.
All-in-all, we loved it. Great overall experience.
