“Excellent Couples Retreat”
Reviewed 13 April 2014

We just returned from a three night trip. We wanted a small, intimate resort where we could completely relax and be well taken care of. We got what we came for. They have something like 130 rooms. So rarely are there even 200 guests on property. We found the resort very well staffed with incredibly warm and friendly people in all departments. With that kind of staff to guest ratio, you feel like you really matter. This isn't a vacation-factory. It's more like a vacation boutique.

The food was outstanding. We had several conversations with Jonathan, the executive chef who has been the El Dorado Maroma about a month now. He's a personable and accomplished international chef who knows how to create inspired menus and attentively manage a culinary staff. We ate at every restaurant, including room service. All was top-notch with wildly fresh ingredients. This isn't a pizza and hot dog kind of place. They'll make you something special if those are the only kinds of things you'll eat. But if you'd rather be impressed by well-prepared classics, and also enjoy fresh new dishes, you can't go wrong here.

Worth noting...this isn't one of those wild-and-crazy spring break themed places with body shots of liquor and blaring dance music until 4AM. If that's what you seek, you might look elsewhere. There is usually a small party crowd around the pool here, but it's not out of control. If you want to have a few drinks with friends, or if you want to enjoy quiet beach time, this small resort offers both with minimal effort to find it.

And pay attention to the daily activity schedules. Or else just walk around (not a huge place, just keep your eyes open). You'll find all kinds of things from tequila sampling to volleyball. One night, they put up a band stage in the pool, surrounded the pool area with linen clothed tables and candles, and had an excellent Italian buffet. We didn't know it was going on until we looked out our balcony and saw it. And it was my most memorable meal of the trip.

If you feel like doing something off property, talk to Luis with Lomas Travel. Good guy. He's based right there on-property. He can set up almost anything for you. That costs a little extra, but very reasonable for what you'll receive.

All-in-all, we loved it. Great overall experience.

The proberty is absolutely gorgeous and very well maintained. Coconut palms growing everywhere. The staff was incredibly friendly. Always greeting us with a smile and a buenas.... Always looking for a way to accomodate us. Opening doors as we approached.
We stayed in the swim up Jacuzzi suite which was a beautiful room and quiet. Only downside is in order to swim up to your room you have to leave the sliders unlocked. They should add a way to use the key to unlock the sliders. The jacuzzi is huge and the outdoor shower was a nice option.
The main pool/pool bar was nice. Intimate lounge set up so your not on top of each other and about 1/2 a dozen shaded day beds whiich were gobbled up early but (again the amazing staff) there was a pool attendant who did a great job of making sure people didnt stake their territory. If you left to go in the pool, the beach or for lunch She folded your clothes and laid out fresh towels for your arrival back. She had a cart with books, bottled water ice, sun screen etc for guest use.
The same went for the beach with the service and ammeneties. The drink service on the beach was a little slow but not at the fault of the server. I saw the poor woman running all over the resort bringing drinks to the guests on the beach, pool and even to the rooms. I think the resort needs a deticated person to service the beach, pools and rooms seperately. Once we mentioned the slow service at the beach to the pool bartender we had our drinks replenished quickly and often without asking by the same server that was running around like a nut.
The beach was nice. They added man made sand bars/bags about 100 yards out to prevent the waves from crashing on the beach but beyond that was enough surf for me. The water within the sand bar was only about 3 feet deep at the most which made it very relaxing to just lounge around in the nice warm water or socialize with the other guests. On some days there was a pretty annoying stench of stagnent water coming off the water. Now sure if it was coming from the Marina or not but it was not nice.
The food was (in my opinion. IMO) just ok but when it comes to food everyones taste varies. Not being a big seafood lover I felt my options were limited. Different menus offered one chicken, beef and veal dish and many seafood options. Food was definitely prepared and presented with a "Gourmet" flair but to me that just means small portions and sometimes served not hot but being an all inclusive you did have the option of ordering more than one appetizer or entre'..
NOW FOR THE BEST PART OF MY VACATION! Although night time entertainment was very limited ( Ricks bar opened till 2AM but usually empty by midnighta) EVERY PERSON ON THE ENTERTAINMENT STAFF WAS GREAT! FUN AND FRIENDLY From beach or pool vollyball to any other activity at the resort day or night THE ENTERTAINMENT STAFF was there to make sure you had a great time.
SO, in a nutshell the rooms were clean and comfy, the staff was incredible the food was OK and we really enjoyed our stay at El Dorado Maroma. We will definitely be back and recommend the resort to all who want a nice, catered to, relaxing vacation

Room Tip: Swim up jacuzzi suite is great idea and beautiful room but to access it from the pool you need to le...

We arrived the day after Thanksgiving. When we checked in, we were told we were upgraded from our swim up jacuzzi room to a Presidential Suite. That is the kind of start we like!! We hadn't realized how small of a resort it was. We had to ask the front desk how many people were in the hotel because the first night we felt like the only people on the property. Turns out, it sleeps around 200 and their were only around 80 people the day we arrived. So we got great personalized service.

The room: We were so happy with our MASSIVE room. We had a HUGE bed, (I am pretty sure it was 2 queen beds pushed together), separate kitchen, our own pool that was shared with the room next door, but no one was staying there so it was just ours, and a great patio and all with a view of the ocean. The room was almost too big! On the down side, the walls were kind of thin because every time anyone upstairs flushed their toilet we would hear it but it was fine. Also, make sure to keep the screen door shut. We accidentally left it open the first night for a few minutes and we found bugs in our room the entire time we were there. Gross, but our fault.

The food was OK. Not great, but we are used to NYC food which is some of the best in the world. So all inclusive food never really blows me away. However, I will say this....the Mexican restaurant was closed for renovations the entire time we were there. Everyday we asked if it was opening and they kept telling us tomorrow, tomorrow. Because we were in Mexico, that was the one kind of food we were really excited to try. So after we realized we couldn't have it, we complained to the front desk. Nothing crazy. No yelling, no anger. Just a simple, "well this sucks" kind of conversation. About an hour later our doorbell rings and it is the chef. With the Mexican menu asking us what they could make us. They made us a romantic dinner, near the pool, not in the restaurant, candle lit, away from everyone with an amazing 4 course meal. We were blown away. The food was delicious. And the fact that they went to all that trouble for us was so kind. That alone would make us come back.

We had a wonderful trip. The entertainment each night was great. It is such a small resort and an even tinier bar/stage for the shows but they did great with it. Michael Jackson one night, acrobats another, a magician. It was a lot of fun.

I highly recommend for a romantic, quiet, low key weekend.

In January we were staying in Azul Sensatori and arranged to visit Generations for the day just to experience another Karisma hotel. The hotel is set on the most beautiful white sand beach, a beach you see only in your dreams. For a family to come and relax you couldn't wish for a better place.

BUT THE DAY WAS MADE SUPER SPECIAL BECAUSE OF 4 MEMBERS OF THE STAFF....

Supervisor - Genaro
Head Chef - Wagner
Waiter - Eroin
Food & Beverage Manager - Eduardo

Genaro treated us like Kings, Wagner cooked fresh fish like we have never had before in our lives, Eduardo served wine that was out of this world and surely super expensive and Eroin made us feel really special with his way of service.

If you want the best food you've ever tasted, the best service you could wish for and taste the beautiful wines they have to offer - VISIT GENERATIONS MAROMA....

Just back after 10days ,the location is wonderful and beach is soft white sand a paradise .
The staff were all excellent always happy and smiling the two young ladies in the Papitoes at front of house Prisi and Yvette were just great as the staff in that restaurant always happy to help.
As for food being gourmet it certainly wasn't Papitoes was self service and quite good.
The Italian was not good at all and only one waiter rushing around such a shame he worked so hard.
The Mexican was dreadful only went once first dish fish was not cooked and sent it back and ordered pork rib both my partner and I ordered the same that came and it was cold with some sort of mash that too was cold so we just walked out .

We went to the Asian restaurant which was quite good but the waiter there only one ,must have been exhausted again on his own .
We went for 5 nights to it as the others were not pretty dismal but after 5 times with the same menu it was just plain boring.

On an expensive holiday we expected first class food but each night it wasn't ,so of course we just didn't look forward to having an evening meal ,just glad we didn't book any longer!!!
Really let down with the restaurants .
As for entertainment in the evening there was virtually none ,only a very noisy rock band .
Staff were great !!!!?

We traveled back to El Dorado Maroma because we found ourselves comparing everywhere else we stayed to this resort. It is still wonderful, however they have built a large sandbar which completely stops the waves from coming up to shore - thus no sound of the ocean. The reason they built the sandbar is to build bungalows over the water in the next 18 months. Doing so is going to completely obliterate the views so I guess we have stayed there for the last time. It's too bad because they were are favorite resort and they even upgraded one of two only issues we had with them before which was they added a lunch buffet which they didn't have before. They still don't have real palapas so it's hard to stay in the shade if you want to but we managed. The staff was amazing, especially Daniel and Estella. Spa was nice, not great because there was no place to lounge or steam before treatments. Resort grounds were beautiful and beds were great. I so wish they wouldn't build the bungalows but I'm sure we can find another resort that will keep their waves and views.

My husband and I just returned from a 7 day stay at the El Dorado Maroma Beachfront hotel in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. I simply cannot say enough about the quality of the food, the beautiful presentation, and the wonderful restaurant environments. It is a small, quiet and relaxing venue, and I simply did not expect the variety and quality of the meals offered. We were served like royalty... it took a little getting used to, but it was wonderful. Ricardo Duray and Genavo (didn't catch his last name) were especially gracious and attentive. They made our experience at the Chakay restaurant a memorable one. We had a wonderful time and would recommend it to anyone who wants peace, quiet, rest, beautiful scenery, clean and comfortable rooms, and wonderful staff.

Room Tip: You can't go wrong. Every room has an ocean view.
