We stayed at Catalonia Playa Maroma April 27-May 4. It was about 25 minutes from Airport. We booked a Privileged Superior room through Funjet vacations. When we arrived at the hotel on April 27 we were taken to the Privileged check-in and informed that are room type wasn't available the first night and would have to stay in a regular room the first night. This happened to at least 5 other couples. For the inconvenience we were offered a free lobster dinner or a 25 minute massage for the both us. We took the lobster dinner. The first night we were in room 5226 – the room was fine and clean, but the bathroom was outdated. The next day we got building 6 (which we requested) and room 6118. The room was location was on the first floor overlooking the pool. It was a good location easy and fast to get to the pool and beach – less than a minute to either. The room was the same size as our other room, but definitely updated and very nice! Newer tiled floors, nice furniture and updated modern bathroom counter, sink & shower. The air conditioning worked good and mini refrig was restocked daily with water, beer and soda. However, the room could have used a dehumidifier – our clothes felt damp at times.
We were celebrating our 11th anniversary and at our first room they had put a Happy Anniversary sign on our door, decorated our bed nice with flower pedals & towel art. That night they delivered Champaign and a fruit bowl – both were nice touches.
Beach: absolutely fabulous! One of the best, if not the best beach in the Riviera Maya area! All previous comments about the beach are accurate and true! There are two different sections on the beach. The area to the right is for non-privileged guests that has just palm tree for shade. The area to the left is for privileged and has about 25-30 palapas and palm trees for shade. We usually were out by 8 am to reserve chairs under a palapas, but there was always plenty of chairs. They also had a few beds on this side. There is also beach service on this side.
Food/Drinks: The dinners were the best. The steak house was our favorite – we ate their twice and enjoyed the filet, New York strip and t-bone. The Italian restaurant was good too. We didn’t try the Mexican. Not having to make reservations was nice, you could just show up. We usually went to dinner around 7:30 and never had to wait. Being Privileged status, you could also have lunch and dinner at the Terrance restaurant (above beach bar). We ate dinner at the Terrance twice – the stuffed rolled chicken was really good and that’s also where we had our free lobster dinner. We enjoyed lunch at the Terrance restaurant several times since it was right by the beach & pool - it usually took about an hour since you ordered off a menu, but it was relaxing and had great views. We did walk up to the buffet near the lobby a few times. Breakfast and lunch were ok. Compared to other resorts we have stayed at this breakfast buffet was lacking with selection, i.e., didn’t always have bacon, hash browns, french toast and not a big selection for omelet toppings and not a big fruit selection. I did not care for the house white wine, the house red was ok. They did have a wine menu if you wanted to pay for a bottle of wine, which I saw several people doing. The bar at the beach is open from like 8 am to midnight and they lobby bar is open 24 hours. The beer on tap is Corona light. Pepsi products for soda.
Atmosphere: The resort is easy to get around, it might seem like a long walk from beach to lobby, but really only about 5 minutes and it’s a pretty walk with the lush surroundings. The area around the beach bar is nice with several shaded sitting areas with chairs or couches that you could enjoy relaxing on during the day or at night looking out over the beautiful turquoise ocean. Free WiFi access throughout the resort was wonderful! The gym was outdated and small … it includes 2 treadmills, a spin bike and free weights.
Pool: the pool is decent. Has several different areas of depth – some areas even over your head. I wish they had a swim-up bar. Not having a swim-up bar makes it more laid back.
Stay here if you want a nice beach, relaxing vacation, decent food, good size for families.
Go elsewhere if you don't care about the beach, want a swim-up bar, better food, and more party atmosphere.
In the past 10 years, we have stayed at Catalonia Riviera Maya, Catalonia Royal Tulum, Barcelo Maya, Iberostar Lindo and Maya, RIU Riviera Maya Palace and Valentin Imperial Maya. All have good beaches expect Catalonia Riviera Maya and Barcelo beach was ok.
