My wife and I stayed at the Catalonia Playa Maroma from April 5 - April 12 2014. We booked our vacation thru cheap carribean.com about 2 months before our departure. We were able to book a direct flight from Boston (Logan) to Cancun Int Airport. We opted for a shuttle transfer from the airport to our hotel. Our flight arrived around noon time in Cancun. There was a bit of a wait to be assigned to a shuttle bus. We eventually were assigned to a van with 4 other travellers. The ride to our hotel from Cancun International to the Catalonia Playa Maroma was about 30 minutes. That include a brief stop at a neighboring resort. I would probably hire a taxi next time to avoid the 45 min wait at the airport for a shuttle bus. When we arrived at the Catalonia Playa Maroma we were greated by a concierge who knew our names (our van passed thru a security gate at which our names were given). We were offered drinks at the Tequila Bar. I would recommend having one. We arrived at the hotel at about 1:15p.. The Catalonia Playa Maroma has a 3:00pm check-in. We booked our stay in the privileged section. The privileged section has it's own check in desk. Unfortunately, our room wasn't available until 3:45pm. There was no secure lock up area to store your luggage prior to checking into your room. The checkin process and waiting 2 hours for our room was the only negative about this resort. Everything else was wonderful.. Our room 6013 was in the privileged section close to the pool. We had about a 1 minute walk to the pool, and the 1 minute walk from the pool to the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. About our room. The house keeping staff kept the room very tidy and clean. The cleaning staff created a towel animal daily when they made up our room. The bed was comfortable. The air conditioner worked pretty well. We kept our room at about 70 F. Air flow thru the bathroom was a bit weak. TV reception was a bit grainy. We found that the food at the main buffet was great. We didn't bother to try the specialty restaurants, although we had coupons to use the specialty restaurants 3 times. All restaurants were al fresco - open air. Bring sandals and shorts - its a must. Weather was great on our vacation. It only rained 1 afternoon, but we were inside taking an afternoon siesta. The service at the buffet was very good sat-thursday. It slowed down a bit Friday and Saturday as more guests arrived. We never had to wait to be seated at the main buffet. The resort has capacity for about 400 guests. We had no problem finding a shaded sun lounger at the beach, however, if you wanted to get a shaded chair by the pool, the best seating seemed to be claimed by 7:15 am. We noticed that some guests claim chairs in the best spots, and then not even use them. The bars: The Tequila Bar at the lobby made the best drinks. You could even get a cappacino... which was fantastic. The drinks at the pool bar were a bit weak, that said you could order a mud-slide. We noticed that there were quite a few french speaking guests. Quite a few french guests were rude to americans. My wife and I took french in high school and were able to converse a bit. The entertainment spoke several languages french, spanish, english, etc. The wait staff at the hotel was very friendly, and worked hard. There was drink service to the pool area, and drink service to the beach... if you tipped the staff. Wait at the pool bar was typically 2-3 minutes, wating in ine behind no more than 2 people. The enviroment at this hotel was very relaxing. We didn't do any excursions away from the hotel...we enjoyed the beach every day. This hotel is great for couples, and even for families with children. The pool had several shallow areas for youngsters. I would highly recommend this resort for someone wanting a great beach vacation with great value. By the way, I walked down the beach about 3/4 mile and didn't see even 1 stone.
