“Perfect location with perfect price”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2014

We absolutely loved Catalonia Maroma - we were on our honeymoon and upon arrival we got upgraded to the honeymoon suite. It had its own private pool and was right on the beach!
The service was amazing, we could order room service 24hrs a day!
The room also had an outdoor double sun bed on the verandah and then we also had another double sun bed on the beach right in front of us.
The hotel is located on Playa Maroma which is one of the best beaches in the world. The water is incredible, picture perfect!
The hotel also had 4 restaurants which were all different cuisines and they had a crepe bar (yummy), fresh juice bar and 2-3 other drink bars - all of which were included as it's an all inclusive resort!
You can't beat the location, service or price, we were stoked!

Our family of three really enjoyed this resort! Catalonia Playa Maroma is a small,
extremely walkable all-inclusive resort with some of the most beautiful hotel grounds we have seen. Surrounding wildlife on the grounds was quite neat and it was great to see monkeys and Coatis running around. Here are the three things that we really enjoyed most about the resort:
1)The beach! wow! Powder white sand and turquoise waters really impressed us. No water shoes needed here, just sand straight out. Waiters on the beach gave great service and ensured you could relax under your palapa with a nice book.
2) The rooms (stayed in privileged) were extremely comfortable and clean. Excellent air conditioner and fully stocked mini fridge. Good shower and water pressure were also a plus.
3) Food and staff. The food at the main buffet, 'restaurant pajarito', was above average for an all-inclusive buffet and had excellent breakfast. The staff was always very friendly and attentive. Our favorite was the bar staff in the lobby, Jessica & Balthazar, and Roberto in the mornings at the buffet.
Now for the things we didn't like so much:
1) The alcoholic drinks all come from some sort of mix, not fresh juice or fruit. Margaritas were made with some sort of sunny-d mix.. you are better off just ordering straight liquor if that is your goal. However, the lobby bar had a specialized drink menu and seemed to be a little better at making drinks. They have all of the premium liquors at the lobby bar as well.
2) There is only one pool for the entire resort. The pool is medium sized, but we would suggest that they make another pool, perhaps adults only. Also, the pool is like a hot tub! Not refreshing when it is almost as hot as the temperature outside.. Luckily the beach was awesome at this resort.
Overall our family would recommend this resort compared to the many others we have stayed at.

Room Tip: We stayed in the building towards the back, rooms numbered in the 6000's, the closest building t...

This hotel is located in one of the top 5 most beautiful beaches on planet earth, pool area is very nice, service is great, entertainment crew does their best to keep you entertained in and out of water.

BUT, if you are planning to enjoy tasty and delicious local food from the Riviera Maya (like we did), please DO NOT GO TO THIS HOTEL.

I would prefer to eat from MCDONALDS than give my 2 yo baby girl their buffet food.

They have 4 small restaurants and one big buffet area described below:

BUFFET EL PAJARITO: Breakfast was ok, lots of fruit, yogurt, cereal, bread, ham, eggs, omelets, good coffee, etc. DO NOT EAT their white cheese, that Mexican cheese has been in the fridge for months, the weenies are a joke, orange juice? is not real, it tastes like TANG from walmart, go to the water melon juice or banana juice, those are natural. LUNCH: I really advice to get room service instead of eating buffet food for lunch, specially if you have small children. DINNER: I got food poisoning from eating their fried fish, again, they only offer orange or pineapple juice, which ARE NOT REAL FRUIT, go to the pizza guy and ask for a costume made pizza or just make yourself a sandwich instead of eating what they cook inside.

TERRACE SPANISH TAPAS: They are open for BREAKFAST, lunch and dinner (if you're lucky and they give you a one dinner pass), this is the only restaurant where the Chef knows what he's doing, there are not many options for breakfast but the food is tasty, ask for cappuccino instead of artificial orange juice. Again LUNCH menu is limited, not many options, the entire hotel prepare the hamburgers from what I think is not real meat, a big mac would taste like 5 STAR ANGUS BEEF compared to what they put between two buns. DINNER: this is your only chance to taste good food in this hotel, enjoy it while it lasts, you won't be there tomorrow because they only give you one ticket for this restaurant, as it is TAPAS style, if you prefer to eat more than small bites you are free to order three or four different plates from the menu, all of them are really good Mexican versions of Spanish food including octopus and empanada gallega which is really good.

TORTUGA SNACK AND GRILL: Only open for dinner, you will see a long line of people waiting outside, don't fool yourself, the food is not good, the long line is because they are not good accommodating people inside, once you're in you will see half of the tables not occupied. They offer beef cuts, the portion is ok but the food doesn't taste good, you can tell the chef has no clue how to grill a steak, the soup is Maggi or maybe Knorr but is not real crab what you see in your bisque. We order a sea food brochette and the calamari was uncooked and the fake crab meat was breaking apart, you don't want to eat that.

RESTAURANT TIO PEDRO: They offer Mexican food for DINNER, you would think if you are in Mexico, what could go wrong? ARTIFICIAL GUACAMOLE??? REALLY??? Again the same fake orange juice, the arrachera cut was ok but small portion, beef quesadilla was ok, queso fundido NOT OK, they used the wrong cheese to do that, I know because we live in Houston. They are open for LUNCH as well, but, the same weenies which are hard to eat unless you are drunk and returning from a 2-week shipwreck, burgers? not real meat, that's it, go back to the beach still hungry.

RESTAURANTE TOSCANA: Italian DINNER, you will enjoy a red wine while you wait for bread, the bread is their top quality food, pasta? forget it, if they can't handle real guacamole next door please don't expect to eat a decent pasta in that hotel.

THE BEACH is beautiful, they remove the seaweed from the shore every morning, maybe they should do the same with the 3 thousand cigarette butts per square foot you will find on the ground, if you take your children be aware of what they can find digging in the sand, the water is clear and clean, perfect for families with small children, no rough waves, you can choose the hotel next door for your next trip.

One last thing I recommend, upgrade your room to what they call COMFORT, you'll have free beer and sodas in your private fridge every day, and you will get the tickets for the dinner restaurants, otherwise you will be condemned to eat at the PAJARITO all your meals.

After you upgrade to COMFORT, they send you to do your check-in in a different office, not their main front desk as expected, so please be ready to accept the fact that there are 6 or 7 more families before yours and their rooms are not ready yet (neither your room is ready), it takes about 20-30 minutes per family group to receive their dinner tickets, to sign the papers, to get everybody's passport scanned, and to get your wrist bands, once they do that, they tell you that you can leave your luggage outside and you can start enjoying the amenities, but your room IS NOT READY YET.

If you have already booked your trip, try to cancel it and get a different hotel, or, if you are already checked-in and this is your first night, just relax, enjoy the view and think that WHEN THINGS GO WRONG, ENJOY IT, IT COULD BE WORSE.

Good luck everybody.

Room Tip: Ask for building 4, 5 or 6, otherwise you will be far far away from the pool and beach.

Dear Guest
First of all we would like to thank you for forwarding us your comments, as the opinion of our guests is of the utmost importance to us and our main source to improve our facilities and service. We regret not being able to fulfill your expectations regarding your stay with us, but we would like to clarify some points.
We would like to inform you that we have looked into our files in order to know if we have any report regarding any inconvenience during your vacation in our hotel, and unfortunately there is no record.
First of all, we would like to clarify that our guests have different options for breakfast, lunch and dinner: main buffet Pajarito, where we offer a wide variety of food, open from 6:45 to 10:30hrs, then we leave open a brunch area until the lunch time which is from 12:00 to 15:30hrs, after this time we leave an area open with some snacks and pizza until we open again for dinner from 18:00 to 22:30hrs.

Our Privileged Terrace Restaurant located near the pool and beach area, It`s open for breakfast a la carte, from 7:30 to 10:30am then again for lunch from 12:00 to 16:00hrs.

If the above mentioned options did not satisfy you, we also have the Snack Salad Tortuga open from 11:00 to 15:00hrs for snacks, as salads, hamburgers, hotdogs, etc., located near the swimming pool. The Creperie open from 10:00hrs to 18:00hrs. Our a la carte restaurants Tìo Pedro (Mexican), The Steak House “Tortuga”, Toscana (Italian) or Terrace Tapas and Lounge Bar (Spanish).

And finally we also offer you the 24hrs Room Service option; this information and description of each service is specified and provided while their registration process at your arrival and inside the welcome envelop you received.

It is important to mentioning that as a part of the all-inclusive plan, all our guests are allowed to enjoy of the a la carte restaurants at least one time, this goes according to the number of nights in our hotel, no matter if they are Privileged or not. The guests in a Privileged category receive one extra dinner in our Terrace Tapas Restaurant and Lounge bar, which is one of the benefits included with the Plan.

Concerning the food quality, we truly regret not having been able to satisfy you, all our restaurants offer a great variety of food, our chefs are always more than happy to assist you and do their best efforts to please everybody. We do have a wide variety of fresh food in our restaurants. We can assure you that no matter what tastes you have, you will find at Maroma something different to eat every day.

We would like to clarify that check-in time is at 3pm and even when we do our best effort to give rooms before that time, unfortunately not always is possible. This is why we ask our guests to go for lunch or around the hotel (beach, pool, bars) and then come back at 3pm to get their room. Besides the registration process does not take more than 15minutes.

In Catalonia Playa Maroma we truly care about the comfort and satisfaction for our clients. Our guests are all important and all receive the same kind, friendly, warm and welcoming environment that characterizes us, following the policy and philosophy of Catalonia Hotels: good hotels.

Kind regards,
Management Catalonia Playa Maroma

My husband and I spent end of year 2013 vacation in this hotel. The location is quite good. The standard rooms need to be renovated but generally speaking we recommend it. It's better if you book a privileged room. We appreciated the beach party for the new year's eve.

Room Tip: Privileged room

We took our first trip here in April 2014 and loved it! We are already planning a return visit for next year. The beach is amazing, the resort was immaculate and the food for an all-inclusive I felt was above average in the resturants. The buffets well they are buffets - average. Accomodation tip: My recommendations are to pay for the "priviledge upgrade". I was skeptical at first but this was well worth the money. You have a private area on the beach, limited free spa services and a private resturant that overlooks the ocean. Food tip: We enjoyed breakfast here every morning. The fresh fruit was amazing and I quickly found the french toast was my favorite.

The resort had a nice mix of guests - culuturally, ages, families, couples and singles. My husband and I went with another couple for an adult getaway. It was perfect! However, next year we are bringing our families. Atmoshere tip: We felt that the guests were enjoying themselves and having a great time and feel this is still an appropriate setting for families.

We took a cab ride into Playa del Carmen one night and although it was fun, quickly decided we really had no need to leave the resort for anything. There is plenty to do. Just outside the resort beach area water activities are available for a fee. Activity tip: I parasailed, also the greatest with the water so aqua clear blue I spotted a large sea turtle from the sky!

One night there was a live band in the lobby that was great! They have nightly shows - we watched a few, they were entertaining if you like this sort of thing.

We have spent 10 years at the same resort in Mexico and decided to try something new. The price for our package was affordable, and we were very pleasantly surprised! We are used to a much smaller resort and the size of this place worried me at first but it was not overwhelming at all and we enjoyed the walk from place to place within the resort. After spending the entire day lounging by the pool or the ocean, the walks were welcomed! We also caught some fun wildlife onsite.

Sun tip: don't run out of sunscreen it was three times the price in the gift shop.

My only complaint, the workout room is poor to say the least. Minimal old equipment. I used it a few days while I was there and then just decided to partake in other physical activities like water gym in the pool, running on the beach, etc.

Counting the days to our return!

Had a wonderful trip, due to it being our honeymoon, great weather, and a beautiful beach. We loved every minute of our trip-- but definitely noticed some elements lacking at this all-inclusive resort.

Rooms/Check-in:
We booked the Privileged package-- thinking it would be "high-class" and better service. The hotel lobby check-in seemed to be an easier process than the privileged check-in. We had to wait for nearly 2 hours for our room to be ready. They seemed very unorganized. Once we made it to our room, we were pleased to find we were in building 6, which we requested. We preferred to be close to the beach and pool vs. the lobby and buffet. The rooms were nice, nothing too special- but beds were comfy, they offered a pillow menu, and most importantly had good A.C. Also, we were pleasantly surprised with housekeeping. They serviced our room very quickly and always left a cute towel animal on the bed.

Amenities/Beach:
The pool-- although pretty, the temperature was never refreshing. Stayed very warm. Plus side, chairs were always available- due to everyone being at ocean because of the water temperature. The activities team at the resort kept the pool entertained from about 3-5p every day. The ocean/beach was the most beautiful we'd ever seen. The water was crystal clear. The sand, like flour. Flawless- couldn't hardly find a shell if you tried. A storm rolled in a couple days before we left and washed up debris and made the water a little cloudy-- but other than that... beautiful beach experience!! The main disappointment of the trip was the bars. There were 2 bars on the whole property- unless you were in a restaurant (where the servers grabbed drinks from)-- There's a lobby bar, which was pretty dull, uneventful- decent drinks. And there's a pool bar, if you can even call it a bar. It's more like a window w a server behind it. Again, uneventful, no music, no fun bar atmosphere. We were surprised that there wasn't a swim up bar or poolside bar that was fun and festive. We think they preferred it that way- it seemed to have a family atmosphere and less party people. The evening shows were lacking-- but the entertainers worked very hard.

Food:
We were happy with overall food options. Buffet, was your typical all-inclusive buffet. There were a few hot items that were made to order that helped make it a more enjoyable dining experience. Restaurants-- Italian- delicious, Tapas- amazing, Mexican- decent, Steakhouse- left a lot to be desired. The servers weren't overly friendly, but got our food delivered. The dinners all took longer than we'd hoped- but was quite an event in itself. Several courses with delicious desserts-- 2+ hours each night. Drinks-- would've been better if colder... but then again, we were in Mexico! We felt you could never get enough or any ice! Ice machines were broke the majority of the property. TIP: Bring your own insulated cups for the bartenders to fill... helped a lot!

Overall:
Great trip, great price. Good food, good rooms. Lacking fun bars and drink servers at pool and beach.

We had a fun time. All food and drinks were great loved the restaurants and breakfast overlooking the ocean was amazing. Staff were great. The pools were fun but hot, especially by late afternoon. The bottom of the pools cut up our feet. Not much fun. The rooms were ok. Not anything special. We were on the third floor with 2 young kids ( 5&1) it was a lot of walking up stairs. We would have loved to have gone to the shows but they were so late- around 10pm. We had a great vacation but I think next time we'll go somewhere else.
