“Beautiful Beach can not carry Hotel!”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

I never understood why people wrote long reviews until now. I'm going to try to keep it short. First off the weather was awesome for the 5 days we were here, it was 90 deg everyday.... never rained and wasn't too humid. Overall my trip was relaxing but there were a few disappointments.

1) Bartenders, bell-boy (ESP Mauricio he's awesome) and Wait-staff (ESP Manager,Joel) Fantastic and Great! They are friendly, welcoming and loves to converse with tourist.

2) Beautiful Beach: One of the best beaches I've ever been to; White Sand, turquoise blue ocean water and not too Salty.

3) Hotel Grounds: beautiful.. Feel like you're in a rain forest.
B) Rooms: decent and clean, I've been in better hotel rooms.

1) Front Desk ONLY (this doesn't include Bell-boys): language barrier is a problem. I Do not want to be insensitive; however if you are dealing with customers on a daily basis from different parts of the world you should be able to communicate in English. I personally felt like if you spoke Spanish they were more accommodating.

B) Front Desk Staff should take customer service classes. I had the pleasure of dealing with a Manager by the name of Piliar. She was not accommodating and rude.
(Caution: met a fellow guest who had their personal belongings stolen out of their room within the first 3hrs of arrival- he was told by her "that he has no proof that staff took his belongings. He wasn't reimbursed-- so use the room safe.) Within my first day there I saw several people complaining.

2) Food: SUCKS!!! No real authentic Mexican food. Food is bland!
FYI- if you are a foodie- this is NOT the place for you.... NO BUENO!! What is the point of paying for all-inclusive if you can not enjoy the food. I am Caribbean so I know good food

3) Pool: No swim-up bar. Only 1 bar by the pool and there is always
a LONG line to get a drink. The only other bar is in the Lobby. My personal experience Lobby bartenders were better- Luis and Auturo were the BEST, friendly and funny.

4) Entertainment Staff: WACK!

5) Wifi is Horrible. Also, Smokers.... they were EVERY WHERE by the pool, in the lobby, and on the beach. If you are a non-smoker it's unbearable. They should separate the two in the pool and beach area.

Ending this review with if you want a great beach come here. If you are into hotel service and great food. I would say pass!
FYI- although this is all-inclusive... Tip the staff (bell-boy, drivers, waiters etc) they work very hard to make sure your stay is comfortable.

Room Tip: they are reluctant to change your room if you are unhappy.

Beautiful amazing beach! Nice and clean hotel rooms. Food was good, however would love to see more seafood. Delicious desserts!! Animators do their best to entertain and engage you in a lot of activities such as volleyball, soccer, zumba, canoe and aqua gym. Awesome shows every night as well. Very unique design of the resort with a lot of green spaces where you can observe exotic animals. Many Europeans particularly French and Italians. The majority of staff members are nice. However, receptionists were rude and unhelpful, never smile and often just ignore you. Be careful with the seaweed that floats in the ocean in case you have allergies, got a very bad burn on the skin by accidentally touching them. The water in the swimming pool is boiling all the time, you feel like swimming in a pot with soup. Overall, a good experience, nice place for a holiday. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Receptionists are very reluctant to change the room for you if you ask them by the time you arrived...

I'll start by saying our overall trip was great! We stayed mid-July, 2014. At this hotel, they really go out of their way to please and accommodate their guests. The grounds are beautiful and beach is breath-taking! Our room was located on the second floor of bldg 6, Privileged Superior. It had a modern decor, while the bathroom had what appeared to be more of an authentic, Mexican-hacienda style. All clean, and decently maintained. The water pressure was amazing and much needed after a long, relaxing day at the gorgeous beach. Our air conditioning worked very well and the spacious balcony was an added bonus. We were also wanting to enjoy the spa for massages toward the end of our trip, but both of us ended up with mild sunburns. They were able to offer full body, sunburn-relieving mud massages that really hit the spot! The mud cooled the sunburn and the massage was relaxing. We had a one-hour long couples massage on the deck in the back of the spa, surrounded by jungle & the relaxing sounds of tropical bird calls. It was an excellent service and great experience! Coati and monkeys also visit the grounds at this resort and allow you get up close and observe them.

There were a few short comings as well, though. Since this is an all-inclusive resort, most go with the expectation that drinks will be good, and abundant. I agree with other reviewers who say that the orange and pineapple juices are not made from real fruit and taste really bad! Definitely go for the papaya, grapefruit or banana juices if you're looking for good flavor and made from real fruit. The bar in the lobby and by the beach offer a drink menu, but most include the artificial orange and pineapple juices. It's definitely best to go off the menu. In the front lobby bar, they made delicious chocolate martinis, Irish coffee, and other custom drinks recommended by the bartenders. One bartender in particular makes featured cocktails each night, and really knows what he's doing. The bar by the beach had great mojitos and tequila tonics. The house wines are ok, but nothing to brag about.

We found the best breakfast to be at the Terrace Restaurant, lunch through room service and dinner at the Italian and steakhouse restaurants. (We stayed for 7 nights, and it took a couple of days to figure all of that out.) We tried several meals at the buffet restaurant and Tortuga snack restaurant for lunch. At both places, food was bland, guacamole was not real, hamburgers and hot dogs not good.

Lastly, being that my husband and I are non-smokers, the amount of cigarette butts on the beach and smokers sitting all around us while we're trying to enjoy the beach and fresh air that comes with it, was more than annoying. (I will give some credit to the entertainment staff who went through & picked up cigarette butts & trash one afternoon on the beach. I only saw it once, but was impressed that they tried) It would almost be better to have a smoking and non-smoking area of the beach. Also, in the lobby and bar area, it's open to the outside so guests smoke there too, however the air does not circulate well there, so too much smoking can make for a stuffy, stinky experience.

Again, good trip overall. The beach & scenery were amazing, and the Privileged room was comfortable. The staff were extremely hard-working and accommodating, and they're doing their best with what they have to work with (poor quality juices & food).

Room Tip: Definitely upgrade to Privileged - updated rooms, cabanas on beach, exclusive access to Terrace Rest...

We booked through Barcelo and were offered an upgrade to privileged at the Catalonia Playa Maroma, the resort is well maintained with good facilities, the only bad point is the buffet restaurant which is of pretty poor quality of food, the other speciality restaurants (which you have limited nights in) are of a much better level but you sometimes have to wait a little while to be seated. Overall a decent hotel, great beach, good pool area and not too far from Cancun airport. If they upgrade the kitchen staff in the buffet restaurant then this hotel would deserve its 5 stars

I stayed here the end of June, came with two friends and we had a great time. We upgraded to building 7 where we had a suite with our own private pool and beach, it was to die for!!! One of the nights we scheduled personal massages and dinner on the beach. It was magical. We ate at several restaurants and the food was pretty good. I agree with the other reviews that the beach is one of the most beautiful beaches around. It is very seclusive, gorgeous white sand, they groom the beach area every morning and night so extremely clean and the water is aqua blue. You can't ask for better than that! Another great thing about the resort is it never felt overcrowded. Overall, a great place to stay!

Room Tip: upgrade to Building 7 if you want privacy

My family and I visited this resort for the first time. And I have visited many resorts before my favorite part of this resort was the beach it was amazing white sand Clearwater and you could walk into the beach barefooted all you touch was sand no rocks I would give this resort a five star but I'm going to give it a 4 star if it wasn't for the beach I would give this resort 2 star if it wasn't for the activities and the theater what I was disappointed of this resort was some of the staff although the entertainers were great! some of the food especially the food and drinks were not that great the drinks were so deluted but if you would like to enjoy the beach and the theater and activities I recommend it.
