18 of us descended on The Golden Lion for lunch after a walk round Harborough Magna and the picturesque Oxford Canal. The pub was full (always a good sign) and the staff coped brilliantly. Excellent pub food and a warm welcome. I am not a beer drinker but my son-in-law says it's very good. We'll come again!

Hotel rooms are good value. However at £4.65 for a pint of lager is way of the mark for the Midlands in a pub.......??....?... The hotel reception is also in need of doing up. Staff are nice, but if the food and beer are on London prices, you would expect them to be? Very disappointed in the value. I would stay again, but not eat and drink in that pub. There is a pub not a quarter a mile away that offers real value on a Cauvery at £6.95 and also other various offers and has a nice beer garden. My suggestion would be to either avoid, or stay here and drink and eat elsewhere.

My great grandmother, Charlotte Druce, sold the Golden Lion to the grandfather of the present owners in 1931. On a whim, I made plans to visit the Golden Lion during a trip from Colorado to the UK for other purposes. Wow! Every meal was fantastic, my room was cozy, the setting is quaint and pleasant. The "fitness center" is right outside the door, I went on a different hike each day. The history was engaging. There is a portion of an interior wall exposed to show the original, sixteenth century construction. The proprietors, Jim and Claudia, went out of their way to make me feel welcome and showed me both my great uncle's gravesite and the war memorial where two of my great uncles served in WW1. Perhaps my situation is unique, but I travel frequently, and this was such a refreshing experience after a blur of chain hotels. I will be returning soon with family and friends!

We left rainy London and headed into the sun. About 2 hours north by car, in a country location we stayed at a charming place. The Golden Lion was a country inn several hundred years old. The restaurant even has one of the old walls exposed behind glass so you can see the building of old... The attached building with rooms are newly updated, extremely comfortable...love the bathrooms. So you can experience the old English Inn, but staying in 2014 comfort. Perfect! Pair this setting with Jim and Claudia's friendliness and you'll have a great stay. It feels like coming home after touring London in the chilly rain. It is also easily reached by train, about an hour north of London, then a 5-10 min taxi drive. Oh yes, we noticed that this would be a great place to stay and bike around for the weekend.

Room Tip: No swimming Pool. Lots of biking!

Very friendly and helpful staff. For a village pub that offers food cooked very average with high prices is not on.
The batter on the cod was dark brown. The Sea Bass were the smallest we have ever witnessed.
The wine was over priced and the food prices very high, not value for money.
Will not visit again

We stayed here for one night, en-route to Cheltnham. We stayed in the lovely 4 poster bedroom, ate an evening meal in the bar, and had breakfast.

The room, was at a very comfortable temperature, with windows that opened if you wanted (not always in some places!). The bed was incredibly comfortable and probably one of the best nights sleep we'd had for a very long time. The bathroom was a little dated, but had a juccuzi back, and good shower- with plenty of hot water.

Dinner in the evening was excellent, although slightly more pricey than we'd normally pay for the amount of food we had. It was lovely thought, and to be honest I didn't mind paying a little more for such good food. There were draft beers on tap (always a highlight for my other half) and were reasonably priced for a hotel.

Breakfast was very good, and there was a good selection of cereals etc available, though we had the cooked breakfast.

Our stay was lovely, and if we needed a place to stay along the M6, we'd certainly stay here rather than any of the chain hotels.

One minus was that to get to the hotel, its not directly off the M6, so make sure you have your sat nav. Worth the little extra journeying for the excellent sleep though!!!

Many thanks for your detailed review, I have forwarded on your comments to the team. The comment about the cereals made me smile, I wouild have definitely chosen the Full English Breakfast too!

Room 121 is our more traditional four poster room, our other four poster Room 223 features a Chinese style bed and both have spa baths.
