Owner description: The home of the former governor of Maine and president of Bowdoin College.
Reviewed 24 July 2012

This was the home of Civil War hero Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a star of the 1994 film Gettysburg. The place is being carefully restored by the Pejepscot Historical Society, and if you are a Civil War buff, you will not be disappointed by this trip back into Chamberlain's era. Besides the home itself, there are wonderful Chamberlain mementoes here, such as his Civil War saddle, the boots he wore on Little Round Top at Gettysburg, the actual minie ball slug that nearly killed him at Petersburg, his chair from the four terms he served as Maine's governor after the war, etc.

Joshua Chamberlain remains my hero to this day. Medal of Honor winner, courageous leader of the 20th Maine Volunteers, and hero of the Battle of Little Round Top at Gettysburg, Chamberlain went on to become 4 term governor of Maine and president of Bowdoin College.

The museum is in his partially restored home. Filled with artifacts, we were led on our tour by a volunteer who was enthusiastic and knowledgable at every turn.

The home of Joshua L Chamberlain contains countless articles, pictures and information pertaining to the Civil War. You will be amazed at the people from history who were in this home at one time and all the history it contains. Our personal tourguide was extremely knowledgeable and informative! More history is next door at Bowdoin College and his grave is not far from there.
