“"Must see if you like civil war history"”
Reviewed 3 July 2014 via mobile

We've been to Maine several times before but during the off season when the museum was closed. Made sure our timing allowed us to experience this great piece of history this time. So very glad we did! What an amazing man! Our guide shared many interesting facts related to General Chamberlain's life. As much as we already knew, there was still much we did not know. Interestingly enough, we visited the house on the 150th anniversary, to the day, of the battle at Little Round Top! The guided tour lasts about 45-60 minutes. The tour was really nicely done. So glad this building was saved from total demolition and is being restored to its full splendor for future generations.

“Excellent Museum-in-a-house”
Reviewed 9 February 2014

We learned so very much about the civil war as well as Champerlain in this museum. All visits are via a semi-private tour guide. The guides are clearly thoroughly steeped in the history of Chamberlain, Brunswick, Maine, and Bowdoin College. We were assigned a guide who was a trainee, and although she was nervous, she did a very credible job and was clearly enthusiatic. The house itself, and the exhibits, are interesting, and the location convenient to anything else you want to do or see in Brunswick.

“It offers much more insight than the movie Gettysburg”
Reviewed 8 February 2014

He was a professor, a colonel when he defended Little Round Top, 4-time governor of Maine, and president of Bowdoin College, but the docent who gave us the tour always called him "The General." I liked that. I left this historical residence, knowing a lot more about General Chamberlain's personal and post-war political life. I had admired him for his bravery depicted in the movie before the visit. Now I admire him more for his integrity as a statesman. The guided tour was excellent but I would've liked to be given more freedom to poke around and find interesting details on my own. I also wished that they had allowed me to take a few pictures. Well... BTW, Chamberlain's congressional medal is at display on the third floor of Bowdoin's Longfellow Hawthorne Library, a five-minute walk from the museum.

“Wonderful small historical house”
Reviewed 4 October 2013

We were delighted by the one-hour plus guided tour of the house with a group of about 8 visitors. Both the Civil War "nut" and the non CWN were very pleased. The docent who gave the tour was very well-informed and obviously enthusiastic about the material. The place is only open Memorial Day to Columbus Day.

“Informative and Interesting”
Reviewed 26 August 2013

Toured the Joshua Chamberlain home in Brunswick Maine and found the experience quite informative and interesting. The docent was well informed and provided good information regarding Chamberlain and his family. It was worth the time and the cost was minimal.
