Owner description: Museum dedicated to two Bowdoin College alumni who explored the Artic.

This is the type of museum that AAA travel guides would call a gem. Others reviewers are correct that it only takes a couple of hours but it is worth the effort. Location and opening hours at bowdoin.edu/arctic-museum/information. You can also get lunch at next door Moulton Union. If more adventerous you may want to take a boat from Portland to see Admiral Peary's restored home on Eagle Island, a Maine state park.

Located on the Bowdoin College campus, this is a niche museum well worth seeing — ah, if only it were bigger! Admiral Peary, an Arctic explorer, is an alumnus and one of the College's many claims to fame. The exhibits thoroughly document his death-defying exploits and those of his fellow explorers and his rivals in reaching the North Pole. Be sure to compare the differences between cold-weather gear used in Peary's day and what's used now. Also be sure to look over the stuffed samples of Arctic wildlife — particularly the polar bear that looms high overhead near the back of the museum space! And ponder the animation of changes in ice coverage on the Arctic Ocean! Entry is free. A token donation is welcome.

Your visit won't take a lot of time, but the Bowdoin connection and the available artifacts are informative and stimulating.

This is a small museum with lots of great artifacts. There are some exhibits that use video and other media as well as quite a few taxidermy animals from the Arctic. Since this is a small museum it's good for a visit when you only have one or two hours. The unique pieces from the expeditions and the exploration of the role racism played in how members of the expeditions were treated upon their return were particularly interesting.

We visited the Arctic museum after taking a cruise down the coast of Baffin Island and found the exhibit to be quite authentic, interesting, and informative.
