Camden Maine Stay Inn
Ranked #3 of 19 Camden B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 3 November 2013

We are frequent visitors to Maine and its many Inns and B&Bs. In all our stays we have found the Camden Mainstay to be the best of the best. Each time we return we find it better than ever, as was the case on our most recent visit. The Inn itself and the setting are idyllic. Rooms are comfortable, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. Breakfasts are what you would expect at a traditional Maine B&B: well prepared, varied and delicious. But maybe the inn's highlight are its owners Roberta and Claudio. Their warm and welcoming reception sets the stage for a comfortable stay, and their presences in the breakfast room makes for a pleasant start each morning. Guaranteed, when you leave you will have made two new friends.

Room Tip: Every room is wonderful but we are keeping our favorite a secret.

Only stayed none night in this lovely home but it is thoroughly recommended. It was beautifully appointed and our room was spotless and very comfortable. The owners were welcoming hosts and served a delightful breakfast. No complaints at all!

Among the several B&Bs/small inns we visited on our one month tour through New England, this small, beautiful inn was a true gem and will stir warm memories for years to come. The delightful owners and hands-on hosts, Roberta and Claudio, have anticipated every need and covered every detail. The rooms are beautifully and appropriately decorated and the breakfasts were creative and individually prepared. On-site parking was a security comfort with a full rental car. Common rooms were welcoming and perfectly furnished for their function. Situated on a large property with an inviting garden. A "must-stop" for anyone traveling the west-central Maine coast.

I've stayed at this inn about 4 times, and each time has been delightful. Roberta & Claudio are so warm and welcoming, and the inn and ambiance are very cozy. The rooms are lovely, the inn is close to town (walking distance), and the breakfast is delicious. I can't wait to return for a 5th time.

Room Tip: There is 1 room on the 1st floor.

Me took a trip to Camden for our anniversary and spent a night at the Camden Maine Stay Inn. (Full disclosure, one of us has done some professional work for the owners but never visited the Inn, the other has never met them until this trip.) We found it everything a bed and breakfast should be.

The house is a typical, large, rambling Maine seacaptain's residence located a few blocks from the harbor. What is atypical is just how impeccably the Inn is maintained, inside and out. We both appreciate the character of older homes, and it is encouraging to see the attention lavished on this beautiful structure and its furnishings. The grounds are extensive and peaceful.

Not having booked early, we had the last available room, which was the smallest on offer. Compared to some older inns in which the "last" guest rooms have been shoehorned into cramped or awkward spaces, we felt very comfortable had plenty of room. The bathroom was large and well appointed. The bed was quite comfortable. Once we retired to our room, we slept soundly and were never aware of other guests or activities in the house.

Claudio and Roberta were perfect hosts: welcoming, happy to share information and recommendations, but never intrusive. They obviously take pride in their business, lending some Old World charm to the management of the Inn, as well as showing off some fascinating Old World antiques and paintings.

Our fellow guests seemed just as pleased with their stays. We had some enjoyable conversations late in the eve over coffee and homemade cookies in the parlor, as well as at breakfast. Breakfast was filling and delicious. Lots of homemade specialties, including a delectable spiced poached pear, a breakfast braid and coffee cake.

Camden has much to see and do. Our hosts recommended a restaurant (Fromviandoux) that turned out to be just what we wanted. We strolled into town and checked out the harbor and some shops the afternoon we arrived and the next morning. The more energetic of us took an early morning run through Camden Hills State Park and the trails up Mount Battie, which overlooks Camden. One trial up Mount Battie is just a short walk away from the Inn up Hampden Street - but be warned, this approach is fairly steep. Later we hiked partway up Mt. Megunticook, also in Camden Hill State Park, which was more of an expedition but thoroughly enjoyable. A bit farther afield, but a very short drive, were the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland (terrific art collection, including many Wyeths), and the Endless Summer Flower Farm (chock-full of amazing dahlias for the garden lover).

Great place to stay, great location, great hosts. We both highly recommend the Maine Stay Inn.

We only stayed the one night here. Very welcoming hosts. Lovely room immaculate and very comfortable and spacious even though we were probably staying in the smallest room. Excellent breakfast. This is a lovely inn well positioned for the town. The gardens are amazing and certainly a feature of the inn.

We headed to Camden just for a quick getaway, now that the tourists have retreated. The Inn is close to town and impeccable. We had a beautiful room with a most interesting bathroom and even a sitting room. The host was attentive but not interfering. We brought a bottle of wine out to the garden, watching the band of chipmunks scurrying. We strolled into town for dinner. We were offered a delicious breakfast in the garden room after a restful sleep on a most comfortable mattress. Parking is right outside the locked front door...ring the bell! We highly recommend the Maine Stay Inn. Spend a moment reading its fascinating history!
