Camden Hills State Park

The hike up to the ocean view is absolutely well worth it (also accessible via car), providing uninstructed views of charming Camden below, the harbor/bay, and beyond to Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park. The hike is an easy 45 minutes up, so plan accordingly and give yourself enough time to hike (or drive) and get back down before the park closes.

Camden Hills State Park is part if the Maine state parks and campgrounds system. This is my favorite. The campsites themselves are average in size, but feel cramped to me because I like a more rustic setting. There's good space between the sites with paths leading to the bathroom and showers building in the center. We stay in one of the sites with water, electricity and wifi, though up the hill away from the road are new camp sites with limited resources. The staff have always been friendly, helpful and visible. The mountain is great, Mt Battie, with the most beautiful view if the ocean. Try it at sunset! You can also access Mt Megunticook (sp), which is a much more challenging hike. Lake Megunticook is excellent for kayaking or canoeing.

It's not Bar Harbor, Mt Acadia or Kadahdin but it's accessible, affordable, friendly, and beautiful. Hike Mt. Megunticook for a good workout & great views then take gentle stroll through nearby Fernalds Neck Preserve for a view of Lake Megunticook and some mushroom foraging (if you time it right). Only drawback-level sites for RVs are limited--reserve or get there early! The staff are most friendly ever encountered at a state (or provincial) park!

The next time we are in Camden, Maine, we are staying here. Reasonable off season rates. Close to town yet still very much in the woods. Private wooded sites with water and electricity if needed. Oh and to mention some great family hikes with beautiful ocean vistas. There is also some Technical Rock Climbing here if your an experienced climber with good abilities. Mostly 5.10 and higher grades with one or two easier routes.

My family and I spent a beautiful morning hiking the Megunticook trail in the state park. The payoff was amazing - sweeping views of ocean, lakes and hills at Ocean Lookout. However, this is a strenuous 1 mile climb over a lot of rocks. While the trail is mostly shaded, do not underestimate the need for proper hiking boots, plenty of water and food once you get to the top and maybe a walking stick for the way down. The lookout is mostly sunny so if you want to eat lunch in the shade you'll need to push back into the woods a bit. Our 9 year old son had no trouble bopping up the trail so consider taking the kids and showing them another side of Camden, ME. It's well worth the time.

The park itself is very reasonably priced and the trial was well maintained and clean. Be careful if you come back down the same way you came up. The blue trail markings split into another trail which drops you off in the camping area. However, if this does happen then you're not a far walk back to your car at the hiking trail parking lot. And, the camping bathrooms are really nice and offer a water bottle fill-up!

An all you need campground. We are in a 27 foot trailer with one slide. The sites are very spacious, treed and private. The washrooms are clean with free showers. Lots of hiking, if you are a biker you can easily ride into the town of Camden to take in it’s shops and sights.
The only thing I could see as a benefit would be a shuttle into Camden. This would be somewhat “green” as it would cut down on the vehicles travelling into Camden and relieve some of it’s congestion.
The entrance staff are friendly and informative. Dog friendly.

We car camped here for two nights. Friendly, helpful staff. Ultra clean restrooms, with hot showers and plenty of hot water. The camp sites have fire rings and picnic tables. The sites are not crowded and the park was quiet and well-run. We had a perfect stay. The park provides free wi-fi at most of the sites.
