“Clean and comfortable”
Reviewed 16 August 2014 via mobile

If you need a clean, comfortable, friendly place to spend a night or two this is perfect. For the Camden area, the price is right too. This was actually my second stay here this summer but the first time I discovered a gluten free option at the simple, but serviceable breakfast. Must have missed that the first time. I will be back!

We stayed one night here on our way home from kayak camping in Stonington and will definitely be back. The rooms are simple, comfortable, and impeccably clean. Breakfast was delicious - homemade scones, fresh fruit and terrific coffee. The owners are so welcoming and helpful. They clearly care equally about their guests, their community, and building a strong business. The steps they've taken to minimize environmental impact are smart and sensible.

We found our hosts amiable and helpful. Our room was clean and perfect for our busy schedule. We came to the area to kayak and swim. I enjoyed being in the last room in the motel row next to their chicken coop as we have chickens, too. For breakfast, Jenny provided her delicious homemade scones and muffins with rich organic coffee. The fruit bowl with blueberries and watermelon was yummy. We enjoyed visiting with other guests and found the atmosphere more akin to a BnB. The ocean view from the porch was pretty and we ate our lunch there. Bring a cooler and coffee maker if you are planning a longer stay. The only suggestion I have is that a hook or towel ring by the bathroom sink would be convenient. Being a roadside property, there is traffic noise. However, this motel is priced right and I appreciated the solar energy and earth-friendly concepts incorporated therein.

I cannot contain my enthusiasm about Birchwood. Every room has simple elegance and immaculate cleanliness. Intelligent design has reduced waste and energy consumption in clever ways that are subtle and pleasant, rather than intrusive (e.g. a skylight provides natural lighting and an alarm clock waits unplugged in the drawer rather than blaring red numbers). There is a gorgeously designed garden, which provides for a tasty breakfast. To top it off, the rates are half those of other nearby lodging options. I wish there were more motels like this!

We found this motel on trip advisor and, based on the reviews, decided to give it a try. We were a bit concerned because the price is so reasonable in a resort area with so many pricey places. We needn't have worried. From the moment we arrived, we felt at home. Jenny's warm welcome and the beautiful setting relaxed us immediately. The rooms are very comfortable, incredibly clean, and pretty. This isn't a deluxe hotel, but instead a comfortable and pleasant place to stay. The other guests were friendly, and I had many nice conversations over the coffee and muffins in the morning, and sitting on the long porch in front of my room. Jenny and another guest gave us excellent sightseeing and restaurant advice. I will definitely return and advise you to stay here if you have the chance. You will be happy you did.

Were looking for place to stay in Camden on way up to Bar Harbor and chose the Birchwood Motel--which turned out to be the perfect choice. Great room, beautiful grounds with great view and just short ride out of downtown Camden. In the morning before heading out, enjoyed sitting outside with cup of coffee and muffins/fresh fruit salad. Would have loved to have stayed another night or two, will definitely be back next time we are in the area.

I was torn between average and very good for this review. I opted for very good since there were a few more pros than cons.
Pros: The room is clean and in good shape. It has been kept up and looks modern. The price is also decent. Despite some previous reviews, we found the gentlemen at the front desk to be amiable. It is also nice that this is a sustainable and environmentally friendly place.
Cons: When they say light breakfast, they really mean it. Do not count on it for your meal. It's just tiny muffins and a community fruit bowl. Also, I realize this place is in the woods, but comparatively to other places we stayed in woodsy areas, this place seemed to have a slightly higher insect issue than others. I am not sure if any treatment can be done regarding this. There were no ticks, so whatever it was that got in was merely a harmless nuisance.
Push: There is no fridge in the room, but you are welcome to keep items in the main fridge in the office. This did not really inconvenience us. There is no coffee in the room either, also not an inconvenience, but important to their sustainability mission. Be mindful that downtown Camden is not walkable from this place. Google maps says the walk to the happening places in Camden is about an hour, but only a 6 minute drive. This will only be an issue if someone does not care to be a designated driver.
Overall, recommended for a less expensive stay. Thumbs up for being Earth Friendly.
