“The Hartstone Inn is a Must While in Camden”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

This is our 12th stay. Each time we think it couldn't get better but then the next visit proves us wrong. Rooms are wonderfully decorated and clean, the food is exceptional to say the least, the staff is top notch and helpful in every aspect of your visit, and the Gift Shop is a shopping experience alone. The cooking class with Chef Michael is totally awesome!!!! A stay in Maine is not complete without staying at The Hartstone Inn and Hideaway. Mary Jo, Michael and their wonderful staff will make sure your visit will by far exceed your expectations. If I could rate above "Excellent", I would!!

We recently spent 2 nights in the Normandy Suite and wished we could have stayed longer. Every room is different, and I was definitely looking for as much space as possible. Normandy delivers - a separate entrance, living room on first level, bedroom and bath upstairs. Lots of space, skylights make it light, nicely decorated, beautiful new tiled shower, good airconditioning, and quiet (it faces the back of the property, not the front street).

We were greeted warmly at arrival and there was no fuss or paperwork to register - we were quickly taken to our room, given the info we needed, and left to settle in. I'd say that is the theme for the whole property. Although it is an inn in the best sense of the word, the owners and staff seem to understand that you might also want some privacy. So breakfast is at private tables and everyone seems to try to cater to your individual interests. Owner Mary Jo made the rounds at breakfast to see if people needed any help planning their day - we said we were renting bikes and she had a great suggestion for an area that we might otherwise have missed. The staff is friendly and helpful and attentive, yet not intrusive.

Breakfast is terrific - 2 courses plus fresh juices and coffee - so delicious and served on lovely china. The breakfast was so good that we decided to have dinner the second night and it was outstanding. (Chef/Owner Michael also greeted people in the morning, so we were able to talk to him about the dinner menu.) The food was excellent, wonderful wine list, with great service and a lovely setting. We also took advantage of happy hour before dinner - great mixed drinks for just $5 plus hors d'ouevres. It's lovely to be able to go from cocktail to dinner and then up to your room.....nothing to sign, it's all smoothly taken care of.

Can't imagine staying anywhere else in Camden.......loved being able to just stroll downtown whenever we wanted. Terrific spacious room, great food, wonderful hosts.

Camden alone is a wonderful place, but your experience and trip here will be Unforgettable in the Best Way Possible if you stay at the Hartstone Inn. The staff is inviting, kind, and thoughtful from beginning to end. The rooms are extraordinary, luxurious yet comfortable, and tastefully decorated. The breakfast was superb, perfectly prepared and plated. If you are more of a foodie, you won't be disappointed with the meal service and quality. Believe me when I say my wife and I have traveled all over the world and this was one of our very best accommodation experiences. Thank you Hartstone! You will see us return again some day soon!

This was our first stay at the Hartstone and we were pleasantly surprised. We selected the Arbor Suite which was very large for a 'normal' b &b. It provided plenty of windows, including skylights for cross ventilation for cool sleeping conditions and in the morning you can start the gas stove for warmth if you desire. The room is located in a separate residence next to the main property. Private parking, seclusion, private entrance, and quiet surroundings was an additional plus.

Breakfast was delightful (two course) and we highly recommend dinner there as well. My wife, who normally does not eat meat, enjoyed the fillet that night.

A few recommendations. The coffee in the room is pretty poor (think the old small coffee pouch and fast drip which makes it weak and thin) so maybe upgrade this. Also, breakfast starts at 8:30 which is late if you have plans outside of Camden area.

Would we stay here again. Yes, by all means.

Room Tip: Most of the rooms are in one building. The Normandy and Camden suites have their own entrance and a...

My husband and I have returned to this wonderful B&B many times, after choosing it randomly about 9 years ago. Over the years we have watched it blossom from a charming Inn with amazing food, to a truly special place to come for relaxation and pampering, in beautiful, tastefully decorated rooms and suites, and with amazing food available. The breakfasts are never mundane. They are two course meals, and are beautifully presented. For example, thïs morning was a juice blend ( sorry, I've already forgotten, but it was good), blueberry yogurt with fresh fruit, and then custard French toast with ham. There is no menu, but I believe if there are any food issues. You just need to let them know ahead of time.

Although this is our seventh visit here, it is the first time we have stayed in the Hideaway. I love the location, as it's off the main road, so it's very peaceful, yet convenient to everything in town. Having said that, I have already picked out the room for my next stay, and it's back in the Hartstone Inn. I've never had a room I didn't like, but they vary a lot, in size, location, and style. Take the time to look at the choices online. Their site does a good job describing the different rooms. By all means, call or email, if you have any questions, preferences, or concerns, as getting the right room for your personal preference can make such a difference in your overall experience.

I cannot emphasize enough how wonderful the meals are. I strongly recommend you plan at least one dinner at the Inn. There are two dining options, a tasting menu, which is a five course meal with no choice, and is quite reasonable, as well as a limited a la carte menu, which can be be viewed online ahead of time, and changes seasonally. We look forward to our dining experience here as much as our stay.

Room Tip: If you have a preference, or a particular issue, share it with the staff ahead of time, so they can...

We stayed one night at the Hartstone Inn to celebrate our 45 wedding anniversery. The Inn is located in the downtown area of this charming town. Our room was on the 3rd floor named the Wedgwood Room. It is a large room, beautifully decorated with antique furniture. The inn keepers seemed to have thought of everything including robes, iron & ironing board, chocolates, classical music, air conditioning, and even a sound machine to help one sleep at night. The Inn is full of original paintings from different artists that are available for sale. The staff was very friendly and answered all of our questions. The breakfast was excelent. During breakfast the host asked us what our plans were for the day. We told her we were going to hike up Mt. Megunticook and then visit light houses. She offered us a map of the area and drew out how to find light houses and good places to eat. The directions worked out great and helped us to have a very enjoyable afternoon. The bed was a little softer that what we are used to, but other than that everything was perfect. We especially enjoyed walking throughout the town, beautiflul park overlooking Camden Harbor and waterfall. Also we walked about a half mile along Bayview Street and enjoyed Laite Memorial Beach Park. The park has a beach for swimming and overlooks Camden Harbor.

This really is our favorite place on the Maine coast. We have stayed in other places in Camden and up and down the coast but this is the place we go back to for a weekend getaway even though it is an hour from home. We love Mary Jo and Michael. They are outstanding people and extremely talented, he in producing the most fabulous meals and she in creating a wonderful relaxing place one longs to return to. We always marvel at the quality of the staff who seem proud to there,as though they are invested in the place, seem always happy welcome guests and are very competent and attentive,
The rooms are great, a blend of modern comfort and vintage charm without being dated, faded or aged as some B&B's can be. We have favorites and recommend upgrading though even their most modest accomodations are comfy. The breakfasts are increidble, full, satisfying, tasty, and beautiful.
We like the cocktail hour gathering before dinner in which they offer specially priced drink (a $5 basil martini when we were there last!) though other drinks are available as well. A pleasant conversation with other guests can usually be had before you go in to dinner. Dinner is an experience that will bring you back over and over. If you think you have had the best of lobster, you need to try Michael's. I want to get in the car right now and drive there for dinner, just thinking about it.
For a really fun experience, sign up for the cooking weekend package. Not only do you get a fabulous dinner but also an afternoon cooking with Michael, who is as much fun as he is talented in the kitchen. You may be inspired to inquire about their foody tours to Italy, France or Spain, events that you can watch videos of at your breakfast table. Imagine taking the Harstone Inn cooking weekend experinece and moving to a villa in Tuscany!! Oh my, an experience of a lifetime, but that is another review!

Room Tip: Sign up for a special cooking weekend!!
