Owner description: Maine's oldest lighthouse - and one of the most picturesque and most frequently photographed in the U.S. - has been in operation since 1791. Although it is closed to the public, you can stop by the adjacent museum, enjoy the grounds which include a beach, lawns and picnic areas and view boats entering and leaving the harbor.

Our family visited this site and thoroughly enjoyed our time. We loved walking along the cliff walk and the beautiful grounds. Although the lighthouse was closed for the evening when we visited, we are so happy we were able to experience such a stunning property. We would love to return some day if we're back in the area.

It is clear to see why this is the most photographed lighthouse as it was easy to get to and absolutely breath taking in its beauty. As soon as you open your car door you smell the flowers and the ocean. I highly recommend going there.

This iconic and much-photographed lighthouse is a quick 15-minute drive from downtown Portland. It is easy to find, and there is ample parking at Fort William. I parked at the first lot I came to after turning into the park, and took the Cliff Walk route above the rocky shoreline. This affords you great views of Casco Bay, the nearby islands, and trail vegetation and birds before you arrive at the lighthouse, with lovely photo opportunities along the way.

I arrived too late to tour the lighthouse museum (fee), but enjoyed walking around the lighthouse and grounds of surrounding Fort William. There are beautiful gardens and picnic areas, too. Access to the park and parking are free, and I especially enjoyed my late-day sunset visit.

If you weren't a huge lighthouse fan before visiting the Portland Head Light, this pristine and gorgeously situated lighthouse will change your mind. In nice weather, the lighthouse framed by the deep blue waters of Casco Bay and the rocky coastline makes for National Geographic quality photographs. The small museum is worth a very brief visit to learn about the lighthouse's history, and the park on which the lighthouse is situated has swings for children and lots of room to run around.

Maine boasts 2 of the most famous and beautiful lighthouses in the country, and for my money the Portland Head Light is even prettier than the Nubble. Check out both and decide for yourself.

This is definitely worth the trip. The walk to the lighthouse from the parking is very short. The grounds are very well kept. It is a beautiful setting for a lighthouse with the rock cliffs and deep blue water.
