As we were leaving St John, U.S. V.I., a fellow traveler overheard my wife and me saying how sad we were to leave paradise. These folks opined that they found another corner of our world that was equally perfect, Quisisana along the east shore of Lake Kezar in central western Maine at the level of Conway, N.H. We inquired and made plans to bring our family up for a trial. That trial has now continued for five seasons and we have enlisted again for next year. Quisi is unique. It is a music camp astride a perfect lake which has gourmet cuisine without being too fancy operated by Jane Oren and her family and staff for many years. No regimentation, no uniforms, just pure fun. One can either fly into Manchester or Portland and rent a car for the short drive to Center Lovell or drive, as we do from the Delaware Valley, meeting up with our children and grandchildren who fly or drive. Once in Quisi, all cares evaporate, the poetry of Maine nature takes over and we play, talk, read and let the staff quietly and efficiently provide for us. Our cabins are clean, comfortable and basic as befits a Maine camp. Great views, sufficient privacy. Our grandchildren ages 12 through less than a year play and dine early for dinner before the adults so that they can join supervised play with great counselors--staff in a wreck room that has toys, games, ping pong, etc. We adults then enjoy a cocktail and an unhurried meal before joining the kids again. Able staff are available to baby sit as we adults and our older grandkids attend the nightly music programs which include an opera, Broadway show, chamber music, piano recital, an evening of arias, a Broadway review and an introductory night when the performers introduce themselves. And what performers they are: from the professionals who sing and play in regional and NYC-based companies and orchestras to recent graduates of premiere music schools throughout the USA. These are the same talented, selfless people who clean our cabins, serve us in the clean, comfortable dining hall, and administer to our needs when required. The lake area is ideal, the boating all inclusive from canoes and kayaks to sailboats and motor boats. What fun and totally non-regimented; no one gets in your way. We are tennis players. Quisi has well maintained clay courts. We are swimmers and the beach is clean, the water warm and pure. What more does one want. There are some who go as couples, some who have attended for decades and multi-generational families like us who enjoy both time together and time alone. The camp intentionally accommodates no more than about 150 guests. Small and perfect.
