“We can't wait to go back to Quisi next year”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2013

As we were leaving St John, U.S. V.I., a fellow traveler overheard my wife and me saying how sad we were to leave paradise. These folks opined that they found another corner of our world that was equally perfect, Quisisana along the east shore of Lake Kezar in central western Maine at the level of Conway, N.H. We inquired and made plans to bring our family up for a trial. That trial has now continued for five seasons and we have enlisted again for next year. Quisi is unique. It is a music camp astride a perfect lake which has gourmet cuisine without being too fancy operated by Jane Oren and her family and staff for many years. No regimentation, no uniforms, just pure fun. One can either fly into Manchester or Portland and rent a car for the short drive to Center Lovell or drive, as we do from the Delaware Valley, meeting up with our children and grandchildren who fly or drive. Once in Quisi, all cares evaporate, the poetry of Maine nature takes over and we play, talk, read and let the staff quietly and efficiently provide for us. Our cabins are clean, comfortable and basic as befits a Maine camp. Great views, sufficient privacy. Our grandchildren ages 12 through less than a year play and dine early for dinner before the adults so that they can join supervised play with great counselors--staff in a wreck room that has toys, games, ping pong, etc. We adults then enjoy a cocktail and an unhurried meal before joining the kids again. Able staff are available to baby sit as we adults and our older grandkids attend the nightly music programs which include an opera, Broadway show, chamber music, piano recital, an evening of arias, a Broadway review and an introductory night when the performers introduce themselves. And what performers they are: from the professionals who sing and play in regional and NYC-based companies and orchestras to recent graduates of premiere music schools throughout the USA. These are the same talented, selfless people who clean our cabins, serve us in the clean, comfortable dining hall, and administer to our needs when required. The lake area is ideal, the boating all inclusive from canoes and kayaks to sailboats and motor boats. What fun and totally non-regimented; no one gets in your way. We are tennis players. Quisi has well maintained clay courts. We are swimmers and the beach is clean, the water warm and pure. What more does one want. There are some who go as couples, some who have attended for decades and multi-generational families like us who enjoy both time together and time alone. The camp intentionally accommodates no more than about 150 guests. Small and perfect.

Room Tip: All the cabins are excellent, clean, comfortable with air conditioned bedrooms.

I thought I'd share my experience as someone who worked at Quisisana on staff some years ago. Quisi, as it is affectionately called, is one of the most beautiful places I've been. Not just the lake and the mountains, but the resort as well--pristine and calm, like it hasn't changed in 100 years. My fellow staff members have gone on to perform on Broadway and all over the world. Jane insists on top-notch talent, but has a knack for weeding out the divas. We worked hard, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner (with 2 hour breaks between), after which we ran to the lakeside music hall to get into costume for the shows. We didn't complain because we were treated so well, loved our work, and forged life-long friendships with some of the guests. I am still in touch with several of them after years. But if you want to be left alone, thats fine, too. If you are lucky enough to have the chance to vacation there, go! There is no place quite like it.

Room Tip: There is not a bad cabin or room here. If you are looking for value, come early in the season (bring...

My in-laws found Quisisana 40 years ago. We started going when my daughter was born 21 years ago, and there is still a year long countdown to the next visit. We go the same week every year, as do many others. My inlaws have made friends there, and their kids have become friends, and their grandkids have become friends. Quisi truely feels like home.

Just to hit on a few points: The food is excellent! I have never had anything close to a bad meal.

The staff: I think you would have a tough time finding a better staff anywhere. They have that great combination of caring, intelligence and playfullness that helps make Quisi unique. Many of then attend, or have graduated from, schools for music and theater. They are all very good at their craft.

Lodging: The cabins are great. If you are a first time visitor there is no need to fear that you have chosen a bad cabin: There are none. We prefer to be on the beach, so it's Lakeview for us every year.

The entertainment: Excellent! All of it! A play, opera, cabaret night, piano concert, chamber music, and more. Even if some nights show might not be on your "usual" list...GO! It is so worth it. And I especially love that it has broadened our childrens mind to different types of music and entertainment.

Maine: It's Maine!

The lake: Many people think "OH, Maine. Cold water!" We go the end of July and the water temp is always great. The sailing is fun, as is the water skiing, kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and swimming. The annual swim out to Mermaid Island is a family must and a rite of passage for the youngsters. And the beach staff are so helpful, and smiling even though we beat them in volleyball every year :)

Finally, the owners. I think it's rather unique that they are as concered with the staff as they are the guests. You would expect problems for a staff member that treats a guest poorly, but there can be retribution for a guest that treats the staff poorly. these are professionals in their chosen field and deserve to be treated as such. Planning on coming to Quisi and being demanding and argumentitive? Then don't come on my week!

I mentioned volleyball, there's also tennis and shuffleboard. Local hikes are great, and not too far from the White mountains for a full day trek.

Three months to go!!!!

Jane, the owner, has provided such an amazing venue to showcase talents of up and coming performing artists in a very family-oriented vacation resort. The location is to die for - nestled on the shores of Lake Kazar's crystal waters surrounded by majestic mountains. The three meals a day offer culinary delights the sort one does not often find at such a place. The service both in the dining hall and around the property is 5-star and Jane is a most gracious hostess...but the star of this place is the tremendous talent that she puts together for their nightly shows including a musical (this year was an abridged version of Les Miserables)...the cast was fabulous with Andrea C. Ross shining through as a star to watch for the future. Thank you Jane for a most beautiful vacation

I have been fortunate to vacation at some very nice places but nothing compares to Quisisana! The people are wonderful, the lake is absolutely gorgeous and the food is fabulous. This was my 4th stay and I always love it. If you are lucky enough to go stay among the pines, you will not regret it.

We have just spent our 20th season at Quisisana. Its beauty is its serenity, the wonderful and talented staff and the fact that is a "constant" in this ever-changing world. I really feel totally rested and relaxed. The food is delicious, the staff so friendly and so upbeat. They make you feel like they are your own children, and you become so proud of the way they sing and act. Once you go there, you will find it to be a truly one-of-a-kind place with nothing else comparable. I have only the highest praise. Try it once and you will be hooked.

Room Tip: No pool or fitness center. Just a spectacularly beautiful lake front beach

What can I say, Quisisana is the perfect Maine getaway. My wife and I went (without kids this time). The lake is perfect -- beautiful, clean, sandy bottom, real beach. The kayaking, sailing and now paddle boarding are free and plentiful. And, trust me, you will want to spend alot of time on and in this great lake. The food is excellent. Creative menu, nicely presented. Delicious.

There is nice hiking in the area, but we never worked ourselves up off the beach.

We are definitely heading back.

Room Tip: The "rooms" are really cabins. Each is comfortably appointed. We have stayed in a couple...
