“Wabi sabi coffee stop”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2013

44 North is a coffee roaster set up in the former Deer Isle School. I happily stop here one morning every week.

I'm one of those attracted to all things that are wabi sabi: imperfect by popular standards and charmingly "rustic". This self-serve coffee stop is easy to miss, like a bird's nest in your own backyard - but DON"T miss it:

it's on the honor system, and in addition to the wonderful coffee (fair trade-island made) there are biscotti and triangle donuts that will not disappoint and the whole experience is an oasis of simplicity in a crazy, drive-through, styrofoam world.

“Triangle Donuts, Ginger Biscotti, and Fresh Roasted Coffee to Die For”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2013

When you go into 44 North, there may or may not be someone there to greet you. That's because the two women who own it are often off at farmer's markets or other events. But not to worry; 44 North operates on the honor system and when the owners are away, believe it or not, a money box is left out for patrons to pay for the coffee, pastries, and bread they choose to buy. Luckily, people on the island are pretty honest bunch.

When you open the door to the old Deer Isle High School, the smell of the roasting coffee makes your senses dance. The aroma is just SO WONDERFUL.... WOW! The taste of the coffee doesn't disappoint... it is just as rich as it smells. Choose a TRIANGLE DONUT (YUM!) or a GINGER CHOCOLATE CHIP BISCOTTI (YUM! YUM!) and you will be sure to become a regular. If you are lucky, you will get there when they have bread for sale; it is not baked on the premises, but it is of equally high quality. Multi grain with a chewy, dense crust; delicious!

The shop also sells coffee pots and mugs, and great bags made from coffee sacks. Go once and you will find yourself making up reasons to go into town so that you can stop into 44 North yet again. It is really a treasure.

The have delicious freshly roasted coffees...roasted on site by two very knowledgeable young ladies! You can find them in Deer Isle as well as the Stonington Farmer's Market in the summer. Makes a great house gift!

Run by two amazing women who embody a wholesome and sincere vibe. Their approach to their coffee bean suppliers and to there customers is genuine and they have done an amazing job building their business from scratch. Amazing coffee in a big old building .

“Great coffee - drink a cup & take some home!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 September 2012

The sign is small so easy to miss. We just stopped in after reading a review & were glad we did! Grabbed a cup to go & bought 4 different roasts to go. Spoke with the 2 owners who roast their own beans, fair trade, just in business for 2 years...several roasts. Go up the stairs & talk to them. We did & were glad we did! One of those nice surprises you'll remember!
