“It's all about the view”

We have stayed here about 13 times over a period of 17 years--and as far as I am concerned, the LOCATION of this inn CANNOT BE BEATEN. We stayed at the Penhouse because there were four adults and the extra 1/2 bath proved to be very welcomed. We understand that this Inn is over 100 years old and expect the floors to creak and be a little uneven but the rooms have been updated and are very clean although still somewhat dated. A second television in one bedrrom was a surprise and proved valuable since our son and daughter and law didn't always share TV preferences with us. The restaurant is still and always has been one of the best restaurants in the area. The main problem was the erratic WiFi availability which worked about 1/3 of the time, which was maddening in this day and time. At least we were able to use the computer in the office area which helped, but something is going to need to be done if the inn advertises Free WiFi --but then it works in some locations only 1/3 of the time.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the office probably have better WiFi.

The area is great to visit and Ocean Point is great location. The food and restaurant staff are very good. The resort is starting to get very tired and some updates would help them keep up with other areas.

Hotel, it's location is amazing... The room we chose had a nice view of the dock and bay, although at sunset the Mosquitos want to carry you away!

The room was nicely partially renovated , although the bathroom needs help still and the shower has one of those hideous water saver shower heads that hurts to shower under. Be a amazing room if the bathroom was done. We stayed in the sea wind block.

Bar service was great, although it only opens at 5pm, but that's ok. Dinner was decently priced, service was a bit lacking due to understaffing , but it was doable, just be patient.

But the biggest disappointment was the lobster Mac and cheese. The lobster was bad, it smelled like ammonia and it was strong, we couldn't believe the cook would serve old lobster that really was badly off and should have been thrown away days ago. The waitress was great at apologizing and it appeared she knew they used old lobster in this dish, she was nice enough to comp us a steamed lobster. The food needs some help, even getting instant mash potato as one of your veggies is not acceptable, if you can't Mash a Freshly cooked potato you shouldn't be running a restaurant.

This place is the essence of Maine. Absollutely great location - great view of the ocean, fantastic sunsets, peaceful and quiet, very good restraunt, and comfortable Inn. Desserts are homeade and very good. Wine list is not excessive but adequate. Service is always good. They always have a few specials to go with a more typical Maine menu featuring seafood. From Yankee Pot Roast to mussels to salmon, the meals are always good. If you don't stay here, you need to drive out from Boothbay Harbor for dinner.

Room Tip: If you stay here, get a room on 2nd floor of the Lodge. They are closest to the Ocean and have the...

I have to admit I originally had a couple misgivings before we arrived. I was slightly annoyed when I booked two adjoined rooms in the same cottage and was told one of them had double beds for our boys. Then called me to say that there was only a queen and a pull out. They did try and make amends and offered me a discount for the inconvenience which I thought was very nice. It is very far off the beaten path and it is a little scary to get there in the dark as we did after a long day. When we checked in I admit the rooms did look a little tired, but I said let's sleep on it and see what happens in the morning. I could not sleep as the pillows and mattress were not comfortable to me at all, but my husband slept fine. Go figure. We decided to go to the Bed Bath and Beyond in Maine and invested in good pillows and an egg crate for the bed. This made a huge difference to me.
At the end of the day I have to say we did have a really nice time. The housekeeping was excellent, the entire staff from front desk to restaurant were very attentive and the VIEW is amazing. So relaxing. The pool was clean with an excellent temperature. So even though we got off to a rough start is was a really nice stay and I would seriously consider going back. I feel for what we got there (comp breakfast, clean room, excellent view) it was worth it. There are a lot of hotels in Boothbay Harbor but it is a little more motel like in feeling. Our hotel was very quiet and beautiful.

The Ocean Point Inn is located at the end of the East Boothbay peninsula, roughly 8 miles from the bustle of Boothbay Harbor. Be advised, when I say “bustle” and reference any point in Maine, it would be remiss to expect the congested sensory overload of midtown Manhattan, and, in this case, more accurate to imagine the Germantown district of Columbus, Ohio, on a quiet, weekday afternoon. That is why we go to Maine. Manhattan is glorious for many things. Not one of them being peace and quiet. Be mindful of what you’re looking for as you contemplate spending your precious, vacation dollars.

If it is a journey to reclaim your spirit, refresh your soul, and remind you that the myopic, hectic existence you come from is only a small part of this grand world, then the Ocean Point Inn should be high on the list for accommodations. There is no Starbucks here, nor are there any commercial establishments to speak of, save the Inn itself. There is a charming general store with fantastic ice cream (and beer) within walking distance, but I’ll not give the location away, as any exploration with a purpose here is, in and of itself, a remarkably pleasurable jaunt. It is nearly as quiet during the day as it is at night, and the air just as invigorating, a near constant soft breeze blowing off the bay, dotted with moored local boats and the buoys of lobsterman. To say the rocky coastline is photogenic and breathtaking to behold would be an understatement of epic proportions. The Inn sponsors a yearly photo contest and the submissions can be viewed on the website. See for yourself.

Every morning, one can awaken to the distant growl of lobster boats, intoxicating ocean oxygen, and plenty of smiles and “pleases” and “thank you-s” from the staff and guests alike. During our stay, it seemed we were surrounded by others who also considered it a holy treasure to have discovered this rustic gem. Walk a few feet across the street and plop yourself down in one of the many Adirondack chairs above the coastal rocks, and sit, and look, and listen, and be glad to be alive. Be mindful, however, that when you cross the busy street in front of the hotel, look both ways. It is frighteningly dangerous when, nearly every 22 minutes, a motored beast comes roaring down Shore Road at a blistering 7 miles an hour, driver distracted by sheer joy and ongoing disbelief at something so beautiful with every foot of progression.

Our room was clean with a king size bed and a large window, a spectacular ocean view beckoning one to keep the shades open so as not to miss an ounce of the magnificent terrain. Don’t worry about standing in front of the window in underwear, or less, as it is not busy enough outside to be concerned about voyeurs. I assure you, those that are outside, are rarely looking towards the hotel. Our room, especially the bathroom, could use an update, but we were quite happy there. The staff will fall over themselves to assist you and give you great ideas for daily adventures.

The continental breakfast is adequate and for $7 more there is a hot buffet, which I can’t comment on because we were always grabbing something quick and heading out early. I wrote on my comment card that a higher quality coffee would more suit the distinction of the Inn. We had dinner one night in the restaurant, and I have to say it seemed a bit too formal and almost forced, a far cry from the overall attitude of the place. Which is not to say the staff wasn’t amazing, it just didn’t fit, for me. The food is decent. My suggestions would probably be to scrap the hot breakfast, charge another $5 per room to increase the selections at the continental, improve the coffee (huge), and (to the owners) perhaps go with closer to an Atlantic Avenue feel in the restaurant. For some reason, formality conflicted with the down to earth ambience. That is my opinion. Take note of the word, you TripAdvisor wrecking balls who go on vacation and suddenly, when presented with a forum, assimilate the palate of Anthony Bourdain and the expectations of royalty.

Use the website to select your room and call the hotel for advice. There is homework to be done and there are A LOT of rooms and cottages to choose from. Book early. Many are aware of how nice this place is and many are repeat customers, as I will be. Ocean view rooms go quickly. This is not the Waldorf Astoria. But, I wonder how grand the Waldorf would be if it were under the restriction of being closed during the winter, having to organize the staff every spring. My guess is that the Ocean Point Inn would come out on top. …and (staff), you were right about Bet’s. :)

Room Tip: Check availability of ocean front rooms with a porch access.

If you are looking for a place to go to experience the Maine shoreline without the hustle and bustle of a "tourist" town, this is the place for you. This property is in EAST Boothbay, which is only minutes away from Boothbay where you will get all of the tourist attractions, shops, boat tours, and all of that good stuff. But after all of that, if you are looking for a relaxing, quiet place with a fantastic view of a Maine shoreline and harbor to go to, this is your place. The property has many cottages, as well as rooms in larger buildings. For this stay, I required two rooms, so we were provided with the "Penthouse". Now, when you hear "penthouse", you may be envisioning one thing, but it is not what you are thinking at the Ocean Point Resort. Here is where I get just a little negative. The rooms we stayed in were quite "tired" and needed some serious upgrading. It was very dated, needed some maintenance, and was just a little used and abused. But we did not spend much time on the property, so we could deal with it. The staff was very friendly, and the restaurant was also very good. You do need to be aware that it is one of only a handful of restaurants in East Boothbay. If you are looking for a wide variety, you will need to drive back to Boothbay. However, the location of this property is really nice, and you are literally across the street from the water. Every evening, we would go over to the chairs on the wall and watch the boats come and go from the Card Cove Community Dock, and watch the sunset. Very nice! Despite our room condition, I would recommend this property. Just look for something other than the "Penthouse", believe it or not!
