“Great place to stopover on a long drive”
Reviewed 12 July 2012

My husband and I stayed here for one night while on a long drive. We had the upper coach room. The breakfast was amazing. The owners were very nice and gave us great directions on how to take a more interesting route to the next stop on our trip.
The room was alright. It was clean but some of the decor and furniture could use some updating. The most frustrating part was the shower - the shower head is way too low for the average person and the water pressure is very low as well. The room is very close to a highway, and the sound of the traffic did not keep me awake however it was noticeable when we were in the room as we had to keep the windows open for the breeze.

Room Tip: come hungry, breakfast is really good.

We were staying in the area and found the Riverside as a fine dining establishment. The fact that there are no other choices in East Machias shouldn't put you off. This place was wonderful. We went twice during our week-stay in the area. The service and seafood was excellent. My only complaint was the filet was obviously not a very good filet cut: It was a little tough (cooked "medium") and had some gristle -- and the seasoning was a bit heavy-handed. But Rocky, the chef, came around and talked with everyone. Great guy, nice atmosphere and his wife is also an excellent chef (she does dressings and prep, from what I understand). I'm looking forward to passing through Machias again to see what's on the Riverside's menu.

The innkeepers were welcoming and helpful, and even adjusted the breakfast schedule to accomodate those of us who were leaving for an early birding trip. The B&B has two houses, side by side. We stayed in the coach house, in a Victorian-style, two-bedroom suite, which was quite comfortable. There is a nice porch overlooking the beautiful gardens, with the smell of wisteria and a view of seals in the river and eagles flying past. Breakfast is very good, and the dining room has the same great view of the inlet. We would definitely return, and next time we hope to stay for dinner.
Note: Food and services require planning in such a rural place. Fill up your gas tank when you see the chance, and if you're arriving later in the evening, don't plan on being able to find a meal in town--there are two restaurants, and both close at 8:00 p.m.

Room Tip: If you require internet, ask for a room in the main house. The coach house doesn't have interne...

We very much enjoyed our visit to the Riverside Inn. Rocky and Ellen were very welcoming and helpful. Our dinner on Saturday night cooked by Rocky and assisted by Ellen was truely exceptional. The service was flawless and matched with a lovely wine. We stayed in the upper coach which has a small deck and view of the East Machias River.

On arrival we were shown into the coach house. This was a charming two room suite with a huge verandah overlooking the river. An idyllic view. Dinner was truly unforgettable - it was michelin star quality and we still talk about it and compare other meals with it. We too were up at the crack of dawn as previous reviews, however this was because the beds were too hard and we couldn't sleep. However beds and their qualities are very subjective and perhaps we are just like a soft bed. I would stay again if only for dinner - WOW

Room Tip: The coach house ground floor has a super deck

We arrived early about two hours early on the first night and the room was not ready. We were told come back at 4pm. The owner seemed a bit cold that first day. But, come the next morning at breakfast, she was very warm and welcoming. So, I am assuming she was just having a bad day that day... We all get them...

We stayed in the Lower Coach Room, which had its own private deck overlooking the river. The Lower Couch Room consists of 2 rooms (one with a Queen and one with two twins) sharing a bathroom. But, you should be aware that the bathroom access is through the Queen Room, which also has the TV. So, people staying in the twin room have to go through the Queen Room to use the bathroom. It was not an issue for us. But, it is something you should be aware of.

The breakfasts each morning were wonderful. Very well prepared and presented.

Parking is limited and can be an issue. Especially in the evening, when there are people dining at the restaurant. The small parking lot should be reserved for overnight guests. Overnight guests should not be expected to park in the street.
