“Nice place if you get the right room”
Reviewed 7 September 2007

We stayed there for 2 nights in August. The first night there was a mix up with our room reservation. We had asked for a room with a balcony overlooking the water. Instead we were given a room in the back of the hotel on the bottom floor. It was not a pleasant room at all--stuffy, with flies, and more than a little worn around the edges. There were no windows in the room, only the sliding glass door that serves as the only door to the room. It is covered in heavy curtains that you have to keep closed unless you want everyone walking by to look in (which caused an embarrassing problem for us with the maid). However, we were able to get a much nicer room the next night. It was on the second floor facing the street. That room had a door and window in the front of the room and a sliding door in the back of the room overlooking the water opening to a nice balcony. This room was large and quite nice. We were pleasantly surprised. The bathroom was a decent size too. I would stay there again definitely, but only if I got one of the rooms on the street side on the second or third floor. The desk staff was very nice and helpful, and apologetic for what happened the first night.

I spent a week at the Motel East in late winter. My room was on the top floor. I did not have any heating/cooing issues. The room had a great view of the Islands. The bathroom was great and plenty of hot water. This is a great location "in town". As mentioned in other post about phone service and the motel. They could upgrade the phone system.
Overall I would stay here again.

The previous reviewer described the property very well. We had a second floor room with a great view. The room was huge, very comfortable and clean. Fortunately, being there in September, we had no problem with the heat of the room although we did leave the front window open for fresh air, even though it let in the morning light. Since waking up to a sunrise over Campobello was a wonderful way to start our day, it didn't bother us.

Our room had the little kitchenette, but it was not equipped with a coffee maker which for me is a very necessary piece of equipment; however, the Waco Diner is close by. There was a hair dryer in the bathroom, as well as iron and ironing board in the closet. The phone was problematic (ours rang randomly so we just unplugged it when not in use).

We booked way in advance, fortunately, as we were there for the Salmon Festival. The festival was a lot of fun, with good food, arts and crafts, Maine wine, sails and pirates to boot. The location of the hotel couldn't be beat ... everything was within walking distance. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful; housekeeping was awesome.

All in all, we had a great stay and I look forward to my next visit.

Pros: Modern, clean, great view, some large rooms
Cons: Room was hot, antiquated phone system can make it difficult for someone to call in to you (Cell phone reception is extremely poor in this area)

This 3 level motel is the newest motel in Eastport, Maine. We stayed there for 4 nights during 4th of July week. Anyone who knows Eastport knows that all the lodgings fill up MONTHS in advance for Old Home Week. So when we tried to make reservations only 3 months in advance, we were surprised to find that they had any availability at all. We were two nights in one room, homeless for one night, and then two nights in another room.

The first two nights we were in room 13 which is ground level on the street side. This room has two queen size beds and is quite large. It also has a kitchenette (sink, fridge, microwave, cabinets with some plates/glasses/silverware). The room was clean. It was also hot, and I could not figure out where the heat was coming from. The thermostat was off and it was cool outside, especially at night but it was still hot in the room. There is a glass door on the back side of the room that opens on to a balcony that faces the ocean and Campobello, Canada across the Bay. It is a very pretty view. But if you want to leave the balcony door open for air circulation, you can't close the curtains over it. We wanted to sleep in, so we closed the door and closed the curtains over the glass doors so the room was dark (but hot) when the sun came up. We left the small window in the bathroom (facing the parking lot) open, but that didn't cool the room down. They do not have air conditioning, which usually isn't a problem in Eastport, ME...

When we came back for the final two days we were put in room 24. This room is on the lower level. You have to go downstairs behind the hotel for these rooms. The downstairs rooms are kind of like a row of walk out basement rooms. The only entrance and windows to these rooms are the glass doors to get into the room. These rooms are much smaller, with less furniture, than the street level rooms. Our room had one queen bed. It had a fridge and microwave, but no cabinets or kitchen sink. The rooms on the street level, and I believe top level are much nicer. The stairs down to the back, lower level are made of pink granite stones. The stones are of different sizes and shapes. In other words, if you are old or have balance problems, you do not want to be in a lower level room. The street level rooms are very easy to access. The top level rooms require climbing wood stairs.

Each room has a phone and you can make local calls for free. However, it can be difficult for someone to call in to your room. You do not have your own telephone number. Someone calling you will call the front desk, who will then make the phone in your room ring. If I remember correctly, the switchboard is only manned from 8AM to 8 PM. So if someone tries to call you after hours, or when the front desk person is taking a break, you are out of luck.

The location of the motel is very convenient. It is in downtown Eastport, diagonally across the street from the library. It is within a block of five restaurants, the Blue Iris, The Happy Crab, the Waco Diner, the Mexican Restaurant, and the pizza joint.

The motel also has a small cottage next door that they rent out. It is a one bedroom house with one bath, a kitchen/dining room and a living room. I believe that the living room has a fold out couch and a day bed for larger parties. This cottage has a deck overlooking the bay and Campobello.

The motel recently set up a wireless system. So you can use your laptop, and last I tried it was at no extra charge
