“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 23 December 2011

When we travel we usually try to stay in Hampton Inns. This is probably the nicest Hampton Inn we have ever stayed in. The rooms are large with large bathrooms. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They have a nice pool area and exercise room. The hotel is off the main road far enough so that you didnot have traffic noise. Great place to stay.

While Hampton Inns tend to be fairly similar, the Hampton in Ellsworth stands out for the friendliness and warmth of its staff. Every time we walked by anyone who worked there, we were met with a genuine, friendly smile and were asked if they could help with anything. And they really seemed to mean it!

The inn is fairly new and was exceptionally clean and bright. Our room was large and the bed was extremely comfortable. Breakfast was more than adequate, and best of all, tea, coffee, fruit, and cookies were available throughout the day. The pool was great and the whirlpool was much appreciated. Like the rest of the facilities, both were very clean. An adequate supply of towels was available at the pool area... I hate when you have to use up your room towels at the pool!

All in all, we had a very comfortable stay and would certainly return on a future visit.

With a limited amount of time to spend in the Bar Harbor area, I needed a place I could get in and out of quickly, at a fair price, with solid comfort, and with reasonably good access to the highway system. This place delivered on all counts and offered a good overnight stay.

WHAT WAS GOOD: This is a fairly new property and thus everything is as clean, modern and up to date as you can possibly get….Rooms have all the amenities and comforts you would expect, including a laptop dining tray (a nice convenience). Bedding and furnishings are very good quality….There’s a small but pleasant pool and Jacuzzi located on the first floor….A full breakfast (included in the room rate) is served in a comfortable lounge area and the selection and quality are really very good.

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER: Very trivial, but real glasses (and perhaps even china coffee mugs) in the room would be a plus instead of paper cups.

THINGS TO KNOW: As other reviewers have commented, Acadia NP and Bar Harbor are a bit of a drive (approx. 20 minutes). Ellsworth isn’t much of a destination in itself….The property is located in an Anywhere-USA commercial strip a mile or two from the town center. You’ll find all the usual food chains in the vicinity (Friendly’s, Burger King, etc.) along with a couple of malls. Other than breakfast there’s no dining on site….My room had a shower only, no tub….Bangor, and access to I95, is about 30 minutes away.

BOTTOM LINE: I visited in the off-season but I would imagine that many travelers consider this to be an alternative to the inflated prices and crowds of Bar Harbor and the surrounding area in the busy summer months. This would be a reasonable choice in that regard but be aware of the distance and know that parking in Bar Harbor in the height of the season is a nightmare. If in the area on business or for other reasons, this is a sensible choice.

Ellsworth was not in my original plan since we only meant to travel up the Maine coast as far as Acadia National Park, but then I learned about Campobell Island, New Brunsick and the Roosevelt home there and just had to change our plans. We ended up spending two out of three nights at the Hampton Inn in Ellsworth before going to Bar Harbor. The hotel's front desk staff was very friendly and efficient; when we returned after one night away, they greeted us warmly and gave us the same room -- how convenient!

The king room was very clean and attractive but not spacious. The small refridgerator and microwave were clean and functional -- very useful. The work desk and chair are serviceable -- very nice to have. The upholstered chair was fine for one person to watch the flat panel TV while the other takes the desk chair, bed, or heads down to the fitness room or business center. The TV reception was not always the best, but then, we didn't go to Maine to watch TV.

Both the fitness room and business room were clean and functional -- good assets. The business room has two PCs, but only one is attached to a printer. Guests courteously accomodated each other in sharing the adequate but limited business center.

A nice feature in the lobby was a table with coffee, hot water and teas. In the late afternoon/early evening, fresh cookies were available -- excellent cookies!

The breakfast each morning was wonderful! Hot choices as well as the customary continental choices -- eggs or omlettes, bacon or sausage, cold cereals, oatmeal, waffles, fruit, yogurt, and beverages -- great start to a busy day! The only thing we didn't like were the low-sitting chairs beside the windows (who thought those were a good idea?), and the window area was also quite drafty. On our second morning here, we chose seating in the middle of the room.

Staying here on our second night actually saved us a few dollars. We spent the afternoon on the Schoodic Peninsula part of Acadia National Park and could have headed on to Bar Harbor for the night, but our lodging choice there was more expensive, and it was cheaper to spend the night in Ellsworth before heading into the main part of the park on Desert Island the next morning.

Hampton Inn at Ellsworth is a great hotel for a comfortable stay. We would stay here again.

Helpful hint: if approaching this hotel from downtown Ellsworth, turn left at the traffic light next to the drugstore. If you pass this intersection, you end up having to turn around to access the parking lot from the other direction.

I'm a bit surprised at all the high ratings based on location and price. I have personally stayed at over 70 Hampton Inns in 2011 and while this one is very nice, it is not extrordinary. It's a solid 15+ miles from Bar Harbor and Acadia National park, which is no short drive. There are many hotels closer but I have heard they are not all open out of season. I was also surprised at the out of season rate ($129 in November?). I am a huge Hampton Fan, and this location is as good as most. So for value, comfort, and hospitality, I'll give it the 4 circles it deserves. However, if I were travelling with my spouse, this would not be my first. second or even third choice since there is NOTHING to do in the immediate area around the hotel.

We were here all of twelve hours, so they didn't have a huge opportunity to impress or otherwise. Room decent, welcome fine. TV works. Hampton doesn't set out to provide a memorable experience but to me its at the top end - with Comfort Inns- of the chain hotel offerings. Visible from the strip, so easy to find. Breakfast is a let down- lots of people munching away at a really mediocre buffet breakfast with perhaps the least attractive omelette in the world ever.. Still it meant that we didn't have to wait in line at the diner down the road! Decent value .

Ellsworth itself has little to detain you. Its a roadside stop , or useful to those who want to visit Acadia but don't want Bar Harbour prices .
