“Lovely restful stay.”
Reviewed 2 September 2012 via mobile

I felt like I was going back to the 1950s staying in a quaint village with a lovely railway station. The food was excellent, the room was good. All in all a good stay. Would recommend for people wanting a break away from bustle.

Very disappointing.
I had the sirloin steak which was grissley. Considering it cost £21.00, I was very disappointed.
£21.00 for a sirloin steak which was barely edible. Had better at a Berni Inn. Clearly they buy cheap steaks for maximum profit. Wife had the fishcake, which she did not enjoy.
I had the whitebait starter, again, nothing to shout about, far too much covering the whitebait.
A friend had the mackerel nicoise salad which bascically consisted of a piece of mackerel on a pile of over stacked leaves and an egg. £15.00, extortionate for what it was.
I would not ordinarily moan but it worked out £45 per head inc drinks and I would have expected at least decent food for the price. Substandard food. Would not waste my money by going back.

Can only add to previous comments by extolling the virtues of everything this pub has to offer: the food (I had squid) was very nicely prersented and really tasty, the pub was well kept, toilets pleasant (the gents too often get less attention than the ladies' toilets) and outside area great too. The girls loved playing on the big climbing frame/ship/slide and I enjoyed the surroundings, while the lovely girl at the bar brought my beer out as I couldn't carry all the drinks. Even the beer was well served in a very nice glass.
Excellent all round!

Food is very good (they have a real chef which helps). The bar is cosy and friendly with a good selection of Ales, Lagers and Ciders (even a proper draft Cider).
The rooms are well equipped (good power showers) Flat Tv's, wifi etc but can be a little noisy due to pub customers but this quietens down around eleven. The beds are probably due to be refreshed as mine was quite worn and not as comfortable as it should be.
The staff are very good attentive, friendly and accommodating I had to leave early and the Chef was on hand to make me a quick breakfast.

Stayed here just one night - very large comfortable room. The evening meal was top quality I had the Soup of the day (Tomato and coriander) followed by Sausage and Mash- sounds like standard fare but its not it is of a very high quality and beautifully presented. Desert was Eaton Mess - large portion very yummy. This is not standard pub food! Breakfast was the same high quality using locally sourced produce - the smoked bacon is worth the evening stay on its own!!! Highly recommend this exceptional inn. All the staff were very friendly and extremely helpful.

Excellent room - much more spacious and well designed than is often the case with pub B&B's. Welcome was extremely professional and friendly. Cooked breakfast was excellent. A very quiet area, so a good night's sleep is guaranteed. Lovely 2 mile walk, or regular trains, in to Henley for the evening. Highly recommended.

My husband and I stayed here for one night as we wanted to visit Henley but did not want to be in the town centre. This was just perfect as it is right on the Thames Path so we took a lovely stroll through private roads and fields to the long riverside walk into Henley. The walk was the best bit as there was so much to see, beautiful houses and boats and the busy Marsh Lock. This walk took about 30 mins and then into pretty Henley.

We ate at the Baskerville in the evening which was very nice and our room was very comfortable altho a little noisy as it backed onto the pub garden but nothing to worry about.Breakfast was included and cooked to perfection by a lovely chef called Emma.

All in all a lovely relaxing stay and I would recommend The Baskerville to anyone who likes a walk and an informal atmosphere.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Oxfordshire Restaurant of the Year 2016. The Baskerville in Lower Shiplake remains a traditional village inn with a ‘proper’ bar, a delightful restaurant, 4 star accommodation, a beautiful garden and ambitions beyond its AA rosette. With Kevin Hannah and head chef Jamie Herridge at the helm, its outstanding customer service is matched only by its creative, seasonally changing menus. Fresh, ethically and locally sourced produce lie at the heart of its modern but classically based dishes which offer a memorable experience. 2015 Beautiful South Awards. Silver Award in Tourism Pub of the Year. It is a AA 4 star Inn and is similarly rated by Visit England but with a Silver Award. It is situated on the Thames Path in the tranquil, affluent village of Lower Shiplake, with well appointed en-suite rooms, the Baskerville is the perfect place to stay the night either for Dinner, business or just for a leisurely break. The small town of Henley-on-Thames with its many interesting shops and home to the Henley Royal Regatta and the Henley Festival is only 1.5 miles away. Enjoy a boat trip up the Thames or visit the River and Rowing Museum. Try a night at the Kenton theatre, the fourth oldest in England. Within the village why not stroll along to Shiplake lock and watch the river cruisers pass through. A little further up the hill is the 13th-century parish church of St Mary's where Alfred Lord Tennyson was married. Further afield are the towns of Reading 7 miles, Windsor, with its castle, and nearby Legoland 15 miles, and the university town of Oxford, 22 miles. All of these can be reached by train from Shiplake station 150 m from the pub via the Henley branch line to Twyford on First Great Western trains. Feeling a little more adventurous?
