“Great location and stunning food”
Reviewed 11 July 2013

The title says it all really!

The Baskerville is in the lovely village of Shiplake and a stones throw away from Henley town centre, which makes it ideal when you want to escape the crowds for a bit of R&R.

The food served at the Baskerville is wonderful and the service is equal to this, nothing too much trouble and always a real smile on the faces of the staff, it makes such a refreshing change to actually feel welcome as a customer in this day and age.

I always judge a place I visit on whether I would return and I will return without a single doubt, even if it is just for the amazing breakfast.

Spent 3 nights here in May.
I used to live in Shiplake a long time ago and hadn't been in the Baskerville for about 40 years - it's a long way from Oz! Had a very pleasant time here - very friendly staff, v.good food - especially breakfasts, comfortable room.
It was good to go back!

My group of four friends were walking the Thames Path. I booked two rooms and a table for dinner at "The Baskerville. They have had trouble with their internet connection and so two nights before our arrival my friend rang to confirm our booking. To our dismay they only had the dinner booking and all the rooms were full. Sensing our disappointment and anger at a ruined weekend away Kevin came to the rescue. He found us excellent accommodation in a pub three miles away, arranged a taxi to pick us up for dinner. On arrival at our table there was a chilled bottle of champagne and he insisted the wine with the meal was on the house. Thank you Kevin for such a generous gesture, carried out in such a pleasant manner. The food was superb. All four of us thought it was one of the best meals we have ever had, in such an establishment. The taxi was waiting for us on our departure. We have booked to return in October, but I am confirming in writing and if our room has been let - we will enjoy all these treats again I hope!

We were walking the Thames Path and stopped here for lunch on a Sunday. We would return but book next time as we were initially told that every table was reserved ( although several tables were not used the whole time we were there which was more than an hour and a half). We managed to find somewhere in the small front bar and had a two course set menu. Very good scallops, roast beef and my wife had what she described as one of the best risottos she had ever eaten . The beer is excellent and the staff friendly. One word of warning , the local bores tend to occupy the bar stools in the bar making it difficult to get to the bar and / or get past. Presumably they feel entitled as this is their pub so sit near the fire to avoid listening to their smug nonsense. You know who you are man in a polo club sleeveless top.

Like a previous reviewer we've been walking the Thames Path in stages, and stayed at the Baskerville after a long and hot day's walk from Marlow. We were made very welcome by everyone we met. The room was comfortable and well-equipped, and we enjoyed a wonderful dinner in the restaurant. Breakfast was superb - the smoked salmon and scrambled egg is to die for. Highly recommended, and we will probably visit again, just for a relaxing weekend in a lovely location.

We've been doing regular walks along the Thames path, and on one of our recent walks (Reading-Shiplake), we popped into the Baskerville pub, for a Sunday roast. We wood quality food, were seduced by the atmosphere, friendliness of the staff and good quality of the food, so when we found out they were also a B&B, decided to return a few weeks later for our next leg of the Thames path (Shiplake-Marlow).
We came back, from London, on Saturday afternoon. We had a lovely welcome, and the warmth and friendliness of the staff throughout our stay was neither affected nor overbearing - clearly they have pleasure of working for this establishment and value their customer's experience.
After being shown to our bedroom (cozy, nicely set up, with that 'a home away from home' touch), we had a drink in the garden, which is lovely with its lawn, tree partitions and wooden tables. We were then shown to our dinner tables. I could not decide on my main course because I was tempted by ingredients from several dishes, and the waitress very helpfully offered to ask the Kitchen if they could accommodate. I had an absolutely excellent rib eye steak, cooked to perfection, with a truffled oil mash potato and marinated mushrooms. My taste buds are longing for another one. My companion was likewise delighted with his food. We drunk an excellent Crozes Hermitage, which we polished off with a cheese platter.
The bedroom proved to be very comfortable, with everything we needed. Can I really complain about being woken up at dawn by the joyful tweeting of the birds and the sunshine peering through the curtains? - a sign of being used to living in the city, and more accustomed to the sound of car engines than to nature waking up in the countryside.
Breakfast was as glorious as dinner; full English breakfast for the one (and the quality of it shows how well-sourced and chosen the ingredients are) , smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on muffin for the other. We were offered cereals, fruits, toasts... but could not eat one more mouthful after the feast.
Before we left, we were told that the pub does, in Summer weekends, a barbecue in the garden -- an excellent incentive for us to walk that stretch of the Thames one more!
