“Outstanding two night getaway”
Reviewed 12 November 2010

My wife and I spent 2 nights. She shopped LL Bean 2 blocks away. Many other stores available. Food in Dining Room is 4 star - Tavern is 3 star. Breakfast was included. This was our fourth stay. OUTSTANDING..

First "Inn" we've stayed inn. Rooms are smaller but that's to be expected in an Inn. Very clean, quiet, and within reason. Breakfast buffet included which was really good. Staff extremely helpful. Only downside was it is at the end of the "strip" of Freeport's Main St, which has all the shopping on. Everything is within a reasonable walk, so it's not too bad. Would definitely stay here again.

Enjoyable visit for the most part, but as a senior citizen I favored this hotel more than I believe a younger person would. Afternoon Tea and Full Bkfst Buffet in Restaurant made this an excellent value. Room (Queen Bed with view of gardens) was smallish but Toile curtains made it very charming. Parlor was very spacious with real fireplace. Tavern was a bit over-priced (see separate review). Location was good for LL Bean, but still a two block walk.

Stayed here for two nights, this is a lovely place with helpful and attentive staff in the hotel. The hotel provides an excellent buffet breakfast which meets everyones requirements and was included in the price. We had a large room which had a recently refurbished bathroom, the room was spacious and comfortable and very quiet. There is a large free car park at the back of the hotel. I would definitely go back if we return to this area again.
The only bad point we had was the service we received in the Tavern. We had arrived at 8pm and after settling went down to eat around 9pm which from experience is a little late for dinner as we found that most Americans hit the restaurants around 5:30. There were only two other tables occupied and after having taken our order the staff began clearing up around us and taking time out to have their own dinner. However, don't let this put you off the hotel just go to dinner earlier than we did.
The Inn is a short walk to the numerous retail outlets providing plenty of retail therapy but other than the shopping we didn't find Freeport had too much to offer. However there are some great places to visit further a field try Boothbay Harbor, Kennebunkport and for a long day trip everyone seems to make for Bar Harbor.

First, let me say that I have stayed here more than 50 times. Both sons attended Bowdoin and I visited Maine many times over a six year period. The Inn became my other home. Not once, in seven years, was I ever disappointed. All the Inn's staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. My response travelers who anticipate Madison Avenue-style rooms, or New York "standards" is simply this: if you want to stay at the Carlyle and don't bother coming to Maine. In Maine, things are quirky and the people are cold (but only at first). If you let yourself blend in a little, expect more from less and relax, this will be the best place in the world. So, come on up and stay at the Inn and remember 'Relax'.

Fabulous welcome here and we were upgraded to a deluxe room. The room was charming, open fire and a spa bath. Nicely decorated and lovely comfy bed. Tea and cakes awaited us once we had checked in, and a very good breakfast was included. The hotel is in great location. Nice and quiet and yet just a few minutes walk to lots of outlet stores and restaurants etc. Would definitely recommend.

Stayed only one night with our dog.....referred by our B&B that was full ....and would loved to have stayed longer. I am not a hotel lover but the smaller building for pet owners was perfect ! Comfortable clean. GREAT fireplace ( real wood and lots of it), great linens, nice large bath, even dog bed, dog dishes, treats & food ( way over the top). Loved the pub, good food & service. I could change my opinion about hotels...deserves it's reputation as a trip advisor winner.
