“Trying to find excuses to go back”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2014

We went to Maine for a destination wedding and chose to stay at the Old Saco Inn. What a delight!! Pete (one of the owners) met us in the parking lot and introduced himself. Sandi (the other owner) joined us a few minutes later. We stayed from Thursday until Sunday along with another couple attending the wedding in suites opposite each other..

I spent the better part of 30 years doing business travel, so a hotel is a hotel and a room is a room. What is different about The Old Saco Inn is hard to pinpoint but not hard to feel. Warmth. Friendliness. Thoughtful care put into the Design. Excellence put into the Installation. Creating a hotel that is more like a friend's home and rooms that are more like the storied rooms in British country homes. Add a homey and snug pub, a dining room of informality and excellent food, and you too will be looking for excuses to go back.

What a fabulous retreat in the middle of the woods in winter. Driving a snow mobile was exciting and easy to drive with rental stores close by. Thousands of miles of tracks to explore giving a real feeling of adventure and discovery. With skiing close by at several resorts my dream vacation had arrived. Great Accommodation and food provided by Pete and Sandy, who provided a warm and friendly reception. I can't wait to go back in the summer.

We recently stayed at the Old Saco Inn and had a wonderful experience. Super clean, very open and spacious and the food was excellent. The architecture and layout of the main house is really unique. Rooms were well enough off the main room making them private and ours had its own side entrance which made it easy to do our own thing. The pub, which is centrally located as well, is a great place to relax and unwind for sure. Pete and Sandi are great hosts, always polite, courteous, and accommodating. We will definitely stay there again!

Room Tip: Sweden suite was perfect for our stay!

We were on our way to Vermont but decided to meet family for a great full lunch in nearby NH and we decided to spend the night in Fryeburg, Maine. We found the Old Saco Inn on line. Friendly people and a charming, European feeling to the Inn. Lots and lots of great places to walk. The weather was mixed with rain and sun during our short stay, so we did not take advantage of kayaking on the Saco river, but this activity would have made our stay perfect.
The wine we chose by the glass in the afternoon of our arrival was amazing and good value, and our only disappointment was that we had not reserved the dessert, which was gone by the time we decided we wanted it. (We had opted out of dinner reservations as we had the large lunch but one of the inn keeper's asked us if we wanted to reserve the dessert, which was a special creme brulee priced at only $6.) The next morning's breakfast of a delicious caramel/pecan apple filling french toast along with perfectly cooked bacon AND sausage and fresh fruit was a wonderful surprise. The french toast was a gourmet delight! The Inn keepers cooked and served breakfast themselves and the service was great, yet the inn was full. We took the last room at the inn, a very small but comfortable room with a separate but private bathroom which actually worked out just fine. The inn keepers bought the Old Saco Inn just 18 months ago and it's clear they love their new lifestyle as inn keepers and are working hard at doing a splendid job. These folks came to Inn keeping from the world of high tech and they seem to be creative people. We can't wait to visit again to see what wonderful things they do next.

As an exhibitor at the recent Northern New England Home Flower and Garden Show, and facing a 3 hour round trip drive each day, I made a reservation at the Old Saco Inn. As it turned out, we had successful selling days so I needed to make the drive and reload each night. I arrived on Friday evening at 9:30 and was warmly greeted by Pete and Sandi and offered a night cap in the Pub. Just what this traveler needed. The accommodations were excellent, Gabrielle's Loft, and breakfast was a perfect start to the day. I was so impressed with the Inn as well as having "hit it off" with Pete and Sandi that I made the 3 hour round trip drive Saturday evening after the show to collect my wife and bring her back to share the experience and meet these great people. Many thanks Pete and Sandi, you gave Nancy and I a chance to get away, walk along the river and enjoy a brief respite from what we know will be another busy season for FIORE. We'll be back as soon as we can!

This review concerns the restaurant only. We decided to have dinner Friday evening, May 9, at the Inn's restaurant. We called to make a reservation but were informed reservations were not accepted but if we arrived by 6 pm we should have no problem securing a table. When we arrived, after a forty five minute drive, there was no hostess to greet us, instead there was a box with token like objects (?) whose purpose was to guarantee us a dinner. We each took one and entered the restaurant area where we met a couple we knew who told us they were leaving without eating - not a good sign. At this point I noticed all the tables were occupied and none had been served any food yet - so much for "if you arrive by 6pm you should have no problem securing a table." We entered the bar area and this too was crowded as all seats at the bar were taken apparently with people waiting for a table. It appeared we were in for a long wait, at least an hour or more. Since no one put our names on a waiting list and our tokens (?) were not numbered we wondered how they would know who was next in line for a table. If there was a server assigned to the bar area, no one ever approached up to take a drink order. Two attempts to purchase cocktails at the bar failed as we were never acknowledged. At this point our party walked out and no one seemed to care. Apparently the Old Saco Inn is becoming victim of their own success. They may do a good job of running a successful B&B, but leave a lot to be desired when it comes to running a successful restaurant - accepting reservations would be a good start.

Dear Beeville,

Thank you for coming to our Pub on May 9th., and please accept our apologies for not providing you with a great experience. Thank you also for your TripAdvisor report – your feedback is most valuable in helping us deal with the issues of increased traffic as summer approaches.

One of our constant challenges is to manage customer expectations, and the biggest one of them all is the perception of “Pub” versus “Restaurant”. Our intention when we opened the Inn to the public on Friday and Saturday evenings was to create a congenial, local “Pub” atmosphere, with a small offering of typical pub food on the side, available on a first-come first-served basis.

Our offerings have appealed to a group of guests that regularly come down for refreshment, meet friends, and get something to eat. However, when everyone wants to experience a new location, we run the risk of disappointing guests if we run out of food or are crowded when they arrive (as you had the misfortune to experience). The token system, (where tokens are placed in a bowl at the entrance representing the number of entrees prepared that evening), does allow us to mitigate disappointment to some extent. Upon arrival, a guest can see whether there is food available, and not have to wait until they’re being served to find we’ve run out. If the entrees are finished, they can still choose to come in for a drink, an appetizer or a desert.
Once they have a token guaranteeing their entrée, they relax in the Pub, sitting room, porch or dining room, until they’re ready to order. Dining is a casual affair, offered at the Pub itself, in the dining room or on the Porch.

We acknowledge that we need to do a better job of informing our guests on how the Pub works, what the tokens are for, and generally setting their expectations for dinner. Our present system works well with smaller numbers and our limited infrastructure; balancing the load when the numbers increase is the challenge, which we are addressing.

We’ve taken your comments to heart and thank you again for making them.

Regards,
Pete and Sandi

We just stayed at the Old Saco Inn for the 4th time and recommend it to everyone. You are not intruding in someone's home and getting a bowl of cold cereal in the morning. This is a lodge with private, spacious rooms, inviting atmosphere, cozy fireplace, and the most delicious breakfasts. Sandi's meals are scrumptious, and Pete's an excellent host in the Pub. The grounds are idyllic and offer quiet respite from the busy atmosphere of North Conway, but the Inn is convenient to the area's many activities and shops. We have always enjoyed our getaways at the Old Saco Inn!
