“Not what it seems in the photos”

I think perhaps this property would be great for one person but certainly not for a couple or a family. First of all, the bedroom downstairs has a full bed, not a queen as we were told, but what's most remarkable is that there are two "doors" to the bedroom but only one actual door. The other "doorway" has no door and instead, they have hung a shower curtain there! So, there is no privacy and absolutely no sound control. The bedroom may as well just be part of the kitchen because all that separates it is an extremely thin, cheap shower curtain.

The "loft" is not what it looks like in the pictures. If you lay down in one of those twin beds as pictured, your face would be about 12 inches from the ceiling. It's almost impossible to sleep or even move up there. There is no insolation and EVERY movement echoes through the cabin, but we moved the twin beds together somehow managed it.

The one and only couch is actually so filthy that I didn't want our daughter to sit on it. We put a sheet over it to sit on. I get it: vacation house, you're not going to put a new $3,000 sofa in it, but this thing was so smelly, dirty and sunken that it was just unacceptable.

We were never able to use the porch or the "sandy beach" because the bugs were so horrendous that even with layers of bug repellent, they bit through our clothes and hair. Sunrise, midday, sunset, it didn't matter. We tried again and again, but finally gave up. The "ocean" side of the island has beautiful beaches, but where Blackberry Cove is, it's much more mucky and buggy.

The one good thing: the association beach in the neighborhood was truly stunning. That was the only thing that saved our vacation at all. The sand is pristine, the waves and vistas are beautiful and it's all but deserted.

I would definitely return to this lovely, quiet neighborhood but not this property. What you get at Blackberry Cove is much more in line with a rental about half the price.

Management Response

We are so sorry you were disappointed in this cottage. Blackberry Cove is a typical small Maine Cottage at the shore or a lake. Nothing fancy, but, comfortable and a great place to relax and enjoy Maine. Past guests and repeat guests love it for its simplicity and for the wonderful beach at the cottage as well as the others nearby and kayaking with the kayaks provided by the owners. Maine has many different types of beaches - some rocky and others various types of sand. Midcoast Maine is known more for its pebbly/rocky beaches and great tidal pools. As to the loft - we do say that the twin beds are in a loft and photos do show the sloping roof line and ladder ascent. Unfortunately we do not have control over the pesky bugs. With our unusual winter they have been more of a nuisance this year. Thank you for the information on the sofa, we will certainly check out the sofa situation. Wish you had called us to report this problem so we could have fixed it for you. We have many other cottages that might better suit your needs in the future. Hope you will give us a call to find you a better fit.

“Relaxing place on a fabulous bay.”

Blackberry Cottage was wonderful. Located at the end of a slender peninsula south of Georgetown, Maine, it is located on a tidal bay. The bay goes from a sandy, walkable area to a lovely waterfilled bay twice a day. There are kayaks for trips out when the tide is in, and fabulous sunsets. Plus the ospreys put on a show at every change of tide.
I loved that there was no TV or internet. A real vacation.
I'd stay there again.

Just got back from a week here with my husband and teens. We had an amazing time. The cottage is more like a cabin as it is simple but it is very comfortable. The area of Maine that it is in is absolutely gorgeous with breathtaking views at the cabin and the surrounding areas. The cabin sits on a beautiful bay that just about empties during low tide making it fun to hunt for shells and other sea objects. It would also be perfect swimming for the little ones. The cabin comes with three kayaks, one double and two singles. We had fun kayaking at high tide and even saw a seal poke his head up! When staying here you will also have nearby(you could walk but there is parking) access to sandy oceanfront beaches and some areas with giant rocks to climb on. One of Maine's famous lobster shacks is a few miles down the road. It was featured on the travel channel. Here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9qgKXmS1w4 Reid State Park is also very close by and offers more stunning views with sandy beaches, hiking and rocks to climb on. We got our groceries on our way in, in Bath, and were glad that we did as it is about 30 minute drive to a larger size store from the cabin. There is a convenience store closer by if you forget any essentials. Very fun vacation and we would love to go back!

“Wonderful cottage on the ocean/bay”

This is a wonderful cottage off the beaten path. It is back to basics - no Internet or TV, which can be a big plus for a relaxing vacation. It is also far from civilization - it is a good thirty minute drive to any selection of stores, gas stations, restaurants, etc. This makes for a relaxing vacation, but don't expect to have easy access to all of the conveniences of home.

The kitchen is well equipped, and linens are available in the dressers. There is a gas fireplace to drive off a chilly morning, and a good selection of games and books. Beach access is its strong point - a small private beach is just steps from the deck and is perfect for kids to play in the tidal water. It will change from a shallow calm sandy beach at low tide to a deeper and more wavy beach at high tide. If you want waves crashing on the rocks, there is access to a few other beaches within walking distance on the ocean side of the peninsula, about a half mile away that were a perfect mix of rocky and sandy.

The only negative we had was the hot water tank is really small, so we would run out of hot water after one good shower or two quick ones. We had to stagger shower times between two adults and two kids to have hot showers. It is no big deal, and we were able to work around it. Water quality is excellent. No need to bring in bottled water for drinking.

We would definitely recommend and will probably return.
