“Highlight of our trip”
Reviewed 13 August 2013

If you only do one thing while visiting Moosehead Lake go on the Moose Safari with Chris. I recommend booking the trip early as he was turning people away when we went in mid-July. I would also recommend the early morning trip over the afternoon. Chris picked us up at our B&B right on schedule and we drove 30 minutes along scenic roads in his pick-up to a pristine backwoods pond. Keep your voices down as you get into the canoe so as not to disturb the sleeping loons. Simply being on that pond at sunrise with the fog rising off the water would have been worth the price of admission. On our trip, we saw two young bull moose feeding in the shallows and observed each for 20 minutes or so. My wife is currently getting her best moose photo framed. The loon pictures turned out great as well. As others have said, Chris is a moose expert (in Louisiana we'd call him a naturalist) and a gentleman. He may have an equal in the North Woods but no superior. Additionally, Chris charges substantially less than what our B&B wanted to charge us for booking a similar trip. We're already planning a future fall trip to see moose at higher elevations.

“Unforgettable Time with an Expert”
Reviewed 9 August 2013 via mobile

My wife and I went along with Chris for a morning moose safari in early July of this year from NYC. We were completely unfamiliar with the area, but relied solely on the TripAdvisor reviews and feedback and it was completely worth it. The whole planning process leading up to the day went very smoothly. Beth was fantastic. Chris picked us up right at 5:00am for our trip. It was a little rainy that morning, but that ended up to our benefit. Within 15 minutes, we saw our first moose right off the side of the road in a pond. We then proceeded to see 7 other moose over the course of the next 3 hours. We saw bucks, cows and a calf. Some within 20-30 feet of the car. We even saw a coyote eyeing up a couple of bucks. That was surely a site to see.

During the whole trip, Chris was a complete professional. He's a great guy and very easy to carry a conversation with over the course of a few hours. We highly recommend this adventure to anyone who may be considering it.

If you are looking to go on a moose safari, look to go with Chris ahead of any other tour groups in the area. Also, be wary of any "package" deals with local B&Bs. You will be overcharged when you can just go directly through Chris.

We will definitely consider going on another tour with Chris in the future.

“Highlight of our trip”

I can't say enough about this tour and Young's Guide Service!

August can be pretty tough to see moose, especially in the rain, with the threat of a lightening storm. Chris (the owner and our guide) was extremely up front about that - not wanting to disappoint our group that drove three hours just to get to Greenville for the safari. The storms were headed right towards the location the canoes are kept, so we stayed in the truck and took our safari on wheels rather than water.

We first saw a bull swimming in the middle of the lake and watched him as he approached shore, shook off the water and headed into the woods. Chris showcased his expert calling skills and got the bull to look back and head a few steps in our direction. Our second encounter surprised even Chris! We came across a young cow in the woods and were able to watch her run off into a more dense part of the area. It was certainly video-worthy!

Our group took to calling Chris "The Moose Hunter" (a la Steve "Croc Hunter" Irwin). He was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the area and the moose than we would have had a great time even if we hadn't seen a single one. It was definitely worth the long drive. I can't wait to schedule another safari!

“Fishing and moose safari”
Reviewed 6 August 2013

Chris guided my wife and I for a morning of fishing and an evening moose safari. Before we booked Chris made sure he called and talked to us so he could design the right trip for our needs. We found Chris to be extremely knowledgeable and professional and a heck of a nice guy. We caught a whole mess of fish. The moose were a little tough to find that evening, but we did still see one. We also got to see some wonderful parts of the Maine woods we otherwise would not have. Overall both experiences were great thanks to Chris. He really knows his stuff. Finally, it doesn’t have much to do with guiding—but he made a restaurant recommendation that turned out to be delicious.

“Moose Safari w/ Chris Young!!!”
Reviewed 2 August 2013

We went on a moose safari we Chris Young on the morning of July 5, 2013, and it was the highlight of our trip to the Moosehead Lake area. Chris knows exactly where to find the moose! Chris gave us a choice to go out on a canoe or go with him in his pickup truck. We opted to go in the truck, which permitted us to check several locations for moose. We saw 5 moose, including 3 bull moose feeding in the same lake which is a rarity! We walked down a path to the lake which was obviously a moose path because it had numerous fresh moose tracks! Chris won the 2013 National Moose Calling Championship, and demo'd this skill for us. Chris was extremely informative and all we learned a lot from him. He gave us a great recommendation for a dinner destination, and also gave us great advice as to where to drive to see moose, which we did on both counts. We also enjoyed meeting Chris personally. He operates with the highest level of integrity. He told us he is very inspired by Proverbs 22:1 and he tries to live his life this way: "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold." We are hoping to go back up there and go out on a canoe the next time, and we are also hoping to go up during bird hunting season since we have bird dogs and Chris is also a guide for bird hunts and nature safaris. Thank you, Chris, for a great time!
