“August getaway”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

We had a wonderful few days with our family (11 of us) - three generations, aged 4 to 68. The staff was friendly and helpful and took great care of us. The food is fabulous and plentiful. We hiked, kayaked, canoed, paddleboarded, fished, swam, and just relaxed. Our young grandchildren (4,5,6,7) had a ball being able to play freely outdoors. There are some games for children in the Lodge and a downstairs room has ping pong and foosball. We loved it!

We stopped here on our dog-sledding adventure (Song of the Woods-wexcellent day trip) for a lovely lunch. The lodge was one of the off-the-grid lodges in the AMC conservation area.

Our lunch was only $12 each and consisted of soup, sandwich, beverage and chips. The food was excellent quality and the staff was friendly, accomplished and all out great.

We visited here last summer right before the opening of Gorman. The great staff gave us a little pre-opening tour and I couldn't wait to stay here. We skied in across the frozen lake and were greeted by the staff at the beautiful warm lodge. Hot chocolate and hot coffee for me and a beer for my boyfriend. We were lucky enough to score one of the new 2 bedroom cabins. It's not as rustic as the lakeside cabins as we had out own bathroom and (don't tell) an electric light. The beds were so comfy in LLBean flannel sheets and blankets. The cabin was wonderful. We had great meals and got an amazing night's sleep. In the morning a hearty breakfast preceded our packing lunches and we headed out for a ski. The trails were groomed impeccably and the conditions were great. After a long ski, we headed back for the night to delicious food and great conversation in the lodge. In the morning we packed up and put out stuff out to be transported to Little Lyford. We decided to snowshoe to Lyford - it was another beautiful day out and we arrived at Lyford just in time for dinner. What a perfect day!

We had a wonderful time at Gorman Chairback and are already looking to plan our next vacation. Food was wonderful, cabins are small but very comfortable and the outdoors are your playground. The staff are outstanding as well, extremely friendly and helpful. Can't wait to return.

This was our second trip to Gorman Lodge, (the first time we skied in in a blizzard.) This was easier, as we drove to the lodge itself. We stayed in cabin 1, a rustic log cabin with a wood stove, a double and a single bed. Rockers on the porch are perfect for watching the sunset. Meals are included, and a bag lunch provided for hikes during the day. Chef Dave provides his fabulous meals (served family style at long tables in the main lodge) and sings while he cooks. The staff is great and very pleasant and attentive. There are canoes for paddling or fishing, and lots of activities nearby. Occasional thru hikers come down from the Appalachian Trail to work for stay, and have great stories to tell.

Room Tip: One of the old cabins, #8 is Octagonal in shape. It is right next to the lake. Double bed and 2 twin...

We just attended our second Family Adventure camp and it didn't disappoint. The food is wonderful, the lodging superb (comfy beds). We stayed in Cabin 2 last year (one of the newer cabins by the lake and it was really wonderful being right on the water. This year I upgraded us to a bathroom and stayed in Cabin 11 which I also really enjoyed. Although the view at 2 was still better. The staff is incredible. Aaron in the kitchen is a great cook and his staff really helps out. Rich offered to have kids join him at 6:30am to pick vegetables for that evenings meal with the kids who wanted to. One morning he took a bunch of boys fishing on the lake.
We were split up into two groups which really made the activities flow better. We had Lani as our guide and she was wonderful. Another day Dan took us on a canoe trip across the lake where some of our group saw Moose and two deer. We hiked to Gulf Hagus and went swimming in Screw Auger Falls. Lani changed plans one day for part of our group who wanted to hike to Third Mountain while the rest of us went on a nature walk to catch frogs and build a canoe from a birch tree with AMC's Land Manager Steve.
The staff also added an astronomy night to gaze at stars (we saw Saturn and its rings) many satellites, the milky way, and played games with the kids for two nights. Because of the remoteness the stars are incredible up there. Evenings are wonderful to stargaze, listen to the bull frogs, frogs and loons all singing away.
My kids are begging to go again next year. They don't miss the fact that there aren't any TVs or electronics to play with - they never ask for them. They are too busy kayaking, fishing, playing with other kids, swimming etc. The staff also helped upgrade a small dog-like house to a club house for the kids – complete with sign, table and chairs – the kids spent many hours in there.
I also liked the fact that this year they only had Family Camp Members there. It felt safer to us, not having random strangers wandering around our kids who like to roam free. The kids enjoy being able to wander around and I enjoy not having to worry.
I never once thought about email or the stress of life back home - it’s truly a place to get away from it all. People may think that 14 miles away from the nearest town, no electricity in your cabin may be tough – but once you do it you want to keep going year after year.
Go you won’t regret it!!

they anticipate your every need. and they constantly ask for your input.
Aaron the chef apprentice, sat with me for at least 20 minutes discussing my dietary restrictions and how he could modify what he had planned to meet my needs. Family style eating promotes discussion about the food and everyone agreed that it was fantastic.
The other standout feature that impressed me was the unlimited use of the Rangely skiff, numerous canoes, kayaks and paddle boards. these would be at least $30 per hour anywhere else. Great fishing BTW.
This was outstanding comfort in the wilderness for sure.

Room Tip: ask for cabin #8 if you can get it.... this octagon log cabin is the oldest on the property and full...
