You know you're going to get a great meal when all of the locals recommend a restaurant, and we were not disappointed! The service, the atmosphere and the food were all outstanding. The food was incredibly fresh. The vegetables tasted like they were right out of the garden. I had lobster and mussels that were amazing. One of my colleagues had the pasta and the other had a steak. We were all raving about our food. We couldn't resist dessert and each had something different to share with one another. Again, it was fabulous!

We had a delicious dinner at Slates recently. The menu has something to please everyone and there are several specials as well. Our party sampled the pasta with fresh basil and cheeses; the roast duck breast and the crabmeat crepes. The winner was hands down the crabmeat crepes. They were exquisite. The service and staff were wonderful and we thoroughly enjoyed our waiter Richard. The atmosphere is busy but still very pleasant. Definitely will return to Slates.

When was the last time you told the wait person that you will only order one drink and share it and she said she would ask the bartender to split it at the bar-- olives on one glass and twist on the other? And then offer us a half portion after we finished the first? Liza did at Slates and her service, flexibility and efficiency made our anniversary dinner at Slates a real joy. Of course we had been there before and spotted Jane outside arranging flowers and escorted in as old friends. (We knew Jane from there and her Maine Accents store).

As always, the food was delicious and my wife had the Caesar salad and chicken crepe (you can get one or two) and I had the scallops on pasta-- most delicious and ample. Total bill (including the two half martinis) and tax was $54. While half full at 8 PM on a Monday evening we often find the restaurant full on weekends and always a pleasant dining experience. This is probably our twentieth or so time there and always in the summer as we have a camp nearby. Can't address the winter service or food, but I imagine it is equally good. Highly recommend it.

Slates is in an old building in downtown Hallowell. It is very well done inside and has a great atmosphere. The restaurant can get busy for brunch so the service will slow a bit. But, the food is worth the wait. Reservations are accepted for 6 or more.

We ate a sumptuous dinner here on a weeknight. We did not have to wait, but we didn't get there until 8pm and they were very busy, but there were a few open tables. The menu includes upscale entrees as well as a variety of salads, burgers, etc. with unique flavors and seasoning. Dessert was also good. We shared a single slice of vanilla cake with raspberries and whipped cream. Oh myyy!! It has an eclectic and artsy atmosphere. They had some local artwork displayed on the walls, the tables are all handpainted with different designs. The server had a long braid of hair past her waist. You get the idea? It's a funky, eclectic place with great food and service. Check it out!
