“This motel was very suitable for what we needed...”
Reviewed 30 October 2010

First of all, the staff was very helpful and polite, even exchanging our room for one with an extra bed since they had no kingsize available for us. The room was comfortable and average-sized, bathroom was clean and larger than we expected. We were able to park right outside our door. We got an early start on our first morning (after muffins, juice, coffee provided by motel) since we wanted to see as much of Acadia Nat'l Park as possible before dark. It's very helpful to know ahead of time what time the sun rises and sets, especially if you wish to see sunrise or sunset from atop Cadillac Mtn. We found plenty of brochures/ advice in the office along with maps of the Park, etc. We had a leisurely drive around the 27 mile loop of the Park before enjoying lobster and delicious Maine blueberry pie in Bar Harbor. On our second and final day we decided to sightsee on the "quiet side" of Mount Desert Island so we drove through Southwest Harbor (a very compact village) and on down to Bass Harbor Lighthouse. This lighthouse is an absolute must for photographers but in order to take the photos you have to descend lots of wooden steps (well constructed and safe with handrails). There is a paved pathway from the opposite side of the parking area that leads you to the lighthouse but the only thing visible from that side is the caretaker-house and a couple of large bells (good photo there also). We would definitely recommend Knights Inn to anyone wanting affordable rates and comfort without anything fancy. We found it to be just what we needed-- a nice place to rest while checking out Mt. Desert Island/ Acadia and Bar Harbor.

We -booked last minute and weren't expecting much but what we got was far worse than we expected. The room had an awful smell to it - like sewage, There was no a/c but this being Maine, we weren't upset about that - but there were no screens in the windows either. The kitchen area was pitiful, old pots , cracked, dirty dishes and a refrigerator that stunk when we opened it. We walked away from this hotel willing to lose our money - it was that awful and fortunately we were able to book at another hotel closer to bar harbor with better smell. It is pretty far from Acadia which we didn't realize when we booked. They made it seem like it was close - it isn't .

The rooms do NOT have wifi as advertised. In the lobby on?y. The continential breakfast was prepackaged muffins and coffee. Seeing that other places closer to Bar Harbor were advertising rooms for 50 or less with wifi in the rooms and a better breakfast, id think they would be more competitive. I plan on following up bwith expedia, corporate and the AG

We were a little tired and desparate when we stopped here - otherwise we would have walked away. The whole place is run down and badly maintained. The receptionist was pleasant at first - but when the wireless internet failed she showed no interest in getting it fixed. I was relying on it to search my next motel. The room door was difficult to shut. The bathroom was not properly clean and was in poor condition. The room furniture was falling apart. It was really poor value for money.

Similar to another person's comments here, we were stuck. We needed to get a place quick somewhere in the Acadia area. It was the high season, so beggars can't be choosers. We realized we weren't going to get anything plush for the night, but COME ON! We got the only non-smoking room left we could find at the Knights Inn, which turned out to be this suite for $199. At first glance when we got in the room it was apparent that the decor was...well....ridiculously tacky...and dirty. The couch was broken in the center, and the jacuzzi had flies swirling around in it, but we had no intention of using it anyway. We just wanted a decent night's sleep. Then we pulled off the sheets in the bedroom, and some big icky bugs crawled out. We called the night mgr., who was very sweet, and gave us the only other room available - which was a smoking room. Well...it didn't have any living bugs (they were dead)...but it was filthy, and the linens felt like they came out of a crack house. This cost us $157/night, but it was midnight, so we slept in our clothes and laid our ponchos over the bed. Yes...it was that bad. The next morning, instead of enduring more emotional scarring, we found a room at the Ramada. It was cheaper, and the room was great!

We were desperate for a hotel as everything else between Ellsworth and Bar Harbor were full. We ended up at White Birches and with no other options, paid $99 for the night. The front desk clerk was super friendly, but the first room we were given was supposed to be non-smoking and when we walked in it reeked of smoke. It was an old room, the tv was ancient with no remote control. We ended up going back down to the front desk and we were offered our choice of three other rooms. At that point we were tired from travelling all day, looked at the first room and took it. It was an older room, two double beds, tv did have a remote in this room. The room had a very odd smell, almost like really strong Lysol, but thankfully not smoky. The bathroom had sheer white curtains, and it wasn't until morning that I noticed that it was open in the back, don't think many people would drive back there, but still creepy. Then to top it off, mosquitos and other bugs were smooshed up against the walls, and their blood, etc and bodies were still there!!! GROSS. I can handle alot of stuff, but that seriously was disgusting. Anyways, we left by 9am and heading back into Bar Harbor were we thankfully were able to get a room at another hotel that we'd stayed at last year. It was 5 minutes to Bar Harbor, super clean, super friendly owners and awesome pool and landscaping...and also only $85 per night! Sorry White Birches ~ You may be friendly, but this place needs some serious upgrading and cleaning!

We have just returned from a 2 night stay here and while the motel is on the dated side it has all that is needed to use as a home base. There was a problem with our reservation and the young lady at the desk went out of her way to help as did the GM.
The rooms are clean and comfortable the breakfast in the rest. in the morning was exceptional, nicely priced and good portions.
All in all a very pleasant stay. If you are looking for alot of amenities look elsewhere. But for the price you can't do better.
