“Our 5th summer!”
Reviewed 14 July 2013

We have spent our summer vacation in Maine for the past 5 summers. We found the Captain's Watch B&B for our first trip to Maine in about 20 years 5 summers ago. For the past 3 summers, we have "bookended" our days in ME by spending our first and last nights of vacation here. Each spring when we contact Donna and Ken, they are always gracious and accommodating to our requests for both dates and preferred rooms. Once we book our dates with them, we work out the rest of our trip and we don't usually stay at other B&Bs because we don't think any could compare to our experiences at the Captain's Watch.

Donna and Ken are wonderful hosts and they take the time to get to know their guests. Their suggestions for ideas of things to do around Harpswell and along our routes to other parts of Maine are excellent. The rooms (we have stayed in all but 1) are clean, comfortable and charming and we never get tired of the views. Breakfasts are excellent! and Donna does a wonderful job of planning so that we don't eat the same breakfast twice during our stays. We haven't been disappointed any of the 5 summers that we have visited and our stays at the Captain's Watch are where we feel most at home.

Ken and Donna run a professional enterprise with an engaging personal touch. The rooms are beautifully maintained, immaculate, each with their own personality. (We stayed in the Cupola East room - make sure you go up to the Cupola for a great view).
Breakfast was different each day (wonderful sour cream blueberry pancakes). Our fellow guests were from everywhere and we all became part of the family.
Beautiful views, peaceful setting, great for walking, biking, reading, chill in'. Looking forward to our next visit.

My cousin and I had the pleasure to stay at this well-appointed and friendly B&B. Donna and Ken welcome you like your family. They know the area extremely well and provide a wealth of information. Our breakfast yesterday morning was outstanding! Donna provided a parfait of apple cake, strawberries and cream to get us started with our coffee, tea and juice. This was followed by a wonderful omelette with our choice of ingredients, potatoes, and foccacia. We were set for the day! If you go, I recommend the Cupola East room with fantastic views of the water. It was a spectacularly sunny and clear day with blue skies. While I showered, I had a terrific view of the water. That was quite an awesome experience! My cousin stayed in the spacious suite and was very happy with her accomodations and view. Be sure to take advantage of the 360 degree view from the cupola. We enjoyed our coffee there before breakfast and couldn't believe the view. It was a lovey way to start the day and so relaxing. Go to The Captain's Watch B&B, relax, enjoy the local flavor, a delicious and hearty breakfast, the location/view and the cheerful innkeepers. Can't wait to stay there again in "my" room! Had a great night's sleep too... the bed was extremely comfortable which is so important.

Thank you for taking the time to review our B&B and for your thoughtful comments on your stay. We are so pleased that you enjoyed being with us and do look forward to your returning. Glad our newly renovated bathroom now with the shower's glass enclosure has turned out to be a fun addition to the Cupola East bedroom.

My accomplice and I were on the last third of a tour through Eastern Canada and New England late October. Hurricane Sandy was bearing down. We drove blindly away from our goal of New York City, ended up in Harpswell. Most places had closed for the season.Phoned Captain's Watch cold from the local Info office and Donna & Ken welcomed two hapless Australian weather-virgins with open arms. The tempest with the sunny name crossed landform and pounded away all the next night even here in far off Harpswell. Yet we felt safe within the assured calm of our hosts and the clapboard egress of the historic white house planted on generous grounds. That night Donna prepared a superb dinner for no extra charge; the power evapourated, Ken set out a battery of elegant candles. We ate together, talked like drains. Before the night had touched its apogee we had canvassed sailing, politics, religion, the universe, metaphysics and recipes. Liberal Humanism is alive and well at this perfect, comfortable, gourmet and unique B & B. Our fathomless thanks.

Room Tip: The room with access to the Cupula viewing area is excellent. All good though, comfortable beds and...

I went with a friend off peak and was pleased with the location and the views form both the bedrooms and the dining room. Steve and Donna, the owners, were very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the area. The feel of the place is very much of a home as opposed to an Inn feel. We stayed in a downstairs room with a king size bed with a private bathroom. It had a fantastic view and the bed was quite comfortable.

Breakfast was an omelet to order with baked goods and a starter of a small bowl of fruit. Quite enough food which satiated me for the whole day. Donna sneaks in backed cookies into your room that are quite delicious.

My only concern was the feeling I had that i had to be sociable with them. Do not get me wrong, they are wonderful people to talk to. There were just times when I wanted to sit and do my own thing and I worried about them coming into the living room to chat.

We stayed at Captain's Watch this winter and thought it was beautiful. It's a small B&B that sits up on a little hill overlooking Cundy's Harbor in Harpswell, which is small and gorgeous, and, in the winter, fairly deserted (which suits it- I like Maine that way). A great jumping off point to explore the mid-coast peninsulas (Georgetown, Harpswell, Phippsburg) and easy enough to get up to Bath and Brunswick for groceries and supplies.
The Inn itself is traditional and lovingly looked after. Breakfast was bordering on gourmet and substantial, and the innkeepers are thoughtful and enthusiastic hosts. It feels nearly like staying in a great guest room in somebody's home- it's cozy and because the house is old you can hear most of what's going on elsewhere. We were pointed towards lots of great, out of the way walks.
We had a great time; thanks very much.

Room Tip: It is worth asking if your room faces the harbor. Not all do.

This is our first foray into an on-line rating system, but since we referred to Trip Advisor prior to our booking our stay at the Captain's Watch B&B and found the reviews very helpful, we thought we should add our experience to the mix. Our only previous experiences with B&Bs were in Canada, Ireland and Italy where we discovered each location and breakfast offering was different. We had never stayed at a B&B in the USA and therefore could only compare to our other out-of-country experiences. That said, we know what we prefer in an accommodation and we were very pleased with our three night stay at The Captain's Watch.

Our experience started with e-mail exchanges with Donna that included room selection options and her asking about special dietary needs (we are one vegetarian and one omnivore). On the date of our first night we arrived late, 11:00 PM, and directions to our room were readily visible upon our arrival. We had come to Maine with no set plan or agenda, just three days to explore. Our room had brochures to local attractions neatly laid out for our use. After breakfast the first morning, both Donna and Ken presented a wide variety of options for our sightseeing, from historical sites, art museums, places to hike, etc. so that we could select activities we prefer. In addition, they gave us some great restaurant recommendations. (I made the mistake of not following Donna's advice for a lunch spot and was disappointed in our meal. I learned my lesson.)

The rooms were immaculate, appointed with appropriate decor and some antique furnishings. Our bath towels were changed daily and it was obvious the rooms were attended to each day. The breakfast room was a wonderful, bright room in which to enjoy both the food and conversation with other guests as well as Donna and Ken.

We had read about the wonderful breakfasts offered at the Captain's Watch in other Trip Advisor reviews before our visit, and we were not disappointed. With one of us a vegetarian that eats little dairy and one who eats everything, our diet preferences were accommodated at each meal with quality offerings. The portions were such that we did not leave the table hungry. We had commented to Donna on how much we enjoyed our breakfasts and, unsolicited, she sent us the recipes for many of the dishes.

We were very happy with our first visit to Maine and the experience of staying at the Captain's Watch B&B in Cundy's Harbor. Being from Washington State and never visiting the east coast before, staying in this historic building overlooking the working harbor and exploring the greater Harpswell area was exactly what we were looking for, and Donna and Ken were great hosts. Of course, enjoying lobster in many forms over three days added to our first-time Maine experience. We hope to return to The Captain's Watch in the future.
