“Fun surfing and yoga experience near beatiful Sintra area”
Reviewed 3 August 2013

Our family of four (children aged 5 and 7) decided to spend a week in portugal in july to get a taste of surfing and do some yoga. The retreat indeed arranged this very well and , though neither my husband and i will ever be great surfers, we had a lot of fun trying. Our youngest did not like the surfing but this was no problem as babysitting was easily available. Although the retreat is mainly set-up as a house party we were put up in a lovely little cottage 1 min walk from the main house. The big plusses are that everything is seamlessly arranged with absolutely lovely breakfasts and lunches (best healthy breakfast i ever encountered so far). Dinneroptions are good and plentiful within 15 min driving radius. Other big plus is location, location, location, probably one of the best places to stay in portugal. We rented a car and were therefore could easily reach a great number of attractions, lisbon (25min), cascais (10 min), guincho beach (5 min), sintra mountains with its fairytale castles and gardens (20 min). Timo and Jens who run the place do a very good job in making everything run smooth and people feel welcome. There were couples, groups of friends single people and families present when we stayed and i think all of them had a great time. I felt it to be a very nice alternative for a family with young children to a week's resort holiday. Definite a feel-good experience.

Hello Marjan, thank you very much! We really appreciate your words! We added green smoothies and some vegan breadspreads to the breakfast to make it even healthier!
You guys need to come back and try! Maybe now your youngest even gets hooked on surfing. :-)
Best, Jens

Last week would always be associated with something so rejuvenating and beautiful that I don't think I will ever forget my first ever trip to surf&yoga retreat. It is not advertised Bounty chocolate commercial - it is so much more. Rocking in the hammock listening to Ben Howard after a good day of surfing, drifting away in a snooze before the evening yoga class - was such a piece of tranquility that I never knew existed. You do different types of yoga as well. Believe me - waking up in the morning and holding those powerful poses while looking over the Cascais area and ocean afar - is an experience worth travelling for.

Accommodation is simple but satisfies all necessities - you share a beautiful villa with about 10-15 different people (majority of them are singles and majority of the single travellers are young women) and share a room with one roommate.

I would strongly recommend taking a private lesson with the surfing school, if you're like me and struggle to pick up the surfing. I took it once and it literally opened new horizons for me.

was where on a father-son trip in late April 2013. Jens and Timo are great hosts, the yoga sessions were just perfect as well as the breakfast and dinner.

the views from the villa at night down towards Estoril/Cascais are stunning.

Alex, the surf teacher did a great job teaching my son his first steps - he is still talking about it
we will be back soon - for sure

I spent a great week at the Villa and the waves of Portugal. From the very start I felt like I were visiting some good old friends there. Timo and Jens added such a welcoming and warm touch to the whole experience. They r really treating you as a friend. Actually all the staff and the yoga teachers and the surfing dudes were extremely friendly and helpful and fun.The food is great starting with the BBQ, through the breakfast and the traditional Portugese lunch. And sure, I hope Jens will keep on baking the cheese cake and doing the marmalade coz they are just so delicious, mmmmm. The villa itself has a great view to the villages downhill and the ocean..the garden gives you the chance to chill, hanging in a mat or just lying somewhere on the terrasse or maybe near the pool..it is a very big garden, you will like it. The rooms are nice and all have an individual touch. They are big enough to share, that was at least my impression, though we were only 5 people and each of us had his/her own room. In the rooms each guest gets a welcome free of charge a bottle of portugese red wine (very nice-I LIKE) and a bottle of water. I foud it great, that one (or actually the whole group) have the living and dining room to sit and chat, to watch movies or just relax looking at the skyline from the huge windows. We had some points for improvement:like an airport suttle at a certain time, a light dinner, a landline phone in the house, just small things...Do not hesitate to ask Timo or Jens, if you need something. They will definetely try their best to provide you the service you need & if more ppl ask the same they will implement it.As a whole, I loved this place and I will come back. last but not least: you can do alot there, not only yoga and surf. you can go sightseeing to Lisbon or Sintra on sunday for example. The week is full if you book both Yoga and Surf- a great combination. It was my first time surfing and I loved it, I cant wait to do it again..

Room Tip: just book and you will have a holiday to remember with a big happy smile :)

Hey Rozalina, its always great to have friends visiting! :-)
We are awaiting you with arms wide open. And of course there will be a nice selfmade marmelade creation waiting for you to spread on the freshly baked bread on the breakfast buffet...plus many more new healthy specialties. Thank you for the warm words!! We improved even more by now. E.g. a landline phone was installed shortly after you mentioned it. :-D
Shuttles at fixed times would lead to long waiting times for some guest, thats why shuttles are organized by grouping arrivals best way possible, to share the fare and so ideally no one has to wait more than 45 minutes. Alternatively guests can take a taxi (but waiting time also possible depending on cues and could be much more expensive) or continue by bus-train-taxi (cheapest, but nice train ride), which takes approx. three times the time, though. Dinner wise, we have the option to book a catered veggie dinner, so you dont have to leave the beautiful villa's terrace for enjoying an evening meal. Ready to come for a visit and check out other improvements? Looking forward to seeing you again!
Best, Jens

I had a thoroughly enjoyable week. The food, accommodation, service etc. were excellent. Timo, Jens and all the staff go out of their way to accommodate you and to deal with any request you may have. It is an intense week but you are not obliged to go to every yoga or surf lesson. The surf and yoga instructors are of a very high standard. Surfing will now be a new hobby and I can't wait to do it again. As a solo traveller i was a bit nervous meeting new people but i hit it off with everyone there and this is also because of the atmosphere that Jens, Timo and all the instructors create. I feel more relaxed and energized after the week and it seems the good karma i received has rubbed off since i came back as i certainly didn't have it before i wentI
Only downfall was the weather which rained sometimes and could get cold in the evening which meant could enjoy the beautiful garden, pool and outdoor yoga as much but everywhere in europe is having weather problems. :-)
I hope i get to return next year.

Thanks a lot! We are glad you have enjoyed the high quality of everything. Good news is: it got even better! Check back at our website, facebook or sign up to our newsletter for newest infos.
If we could, we also would provide only the best weather possible for our guests. But there is limits. Next time you are here we simply have to try harder. Or you simply visit us in September, one of the best months of the year: Warm days and nights, little to no wind, less crowds, warm water...book early though, as now this is no secret anymore. ;-)

Climbing up through the Sintra mountain side, with the smell of pine and ocean breeze filling your car, winding round to perhaps the most spectacular view of the Atlantic ocean; you have arrived at the Karma Surf Retreat. An experience more than just a ‘holiday’ you will leave with a new perspective. It is the finely balanced mixture of soulful Portuguese cuisine, friendly, unassuming hospitality and the opportunity to encounter people whom, given other circumstances, you may have missed the chance to meet; that make this place so special.

Each morning you begin your day with yoga; awakening your spirit with the sunrise, barefoot, on the wooden veranda overlooking the Atlantic. This view, ever changing dependent on the time of day is something you will never tire of during your stay. The surf experience is one which will leave you exhausted and determined as you try to become one with the waves; you’ll watch children negotiate the currents with flair and tenacity, whilst you spend your first few days swallowing most of the Atlantic. But don’t despair, you’ll end the day with the best night’s sleep you have had in months.

Ultimately, to describe this experience in words or to try and capture it in photographs is a futile endeavour. You have to go there and experience it yourself- you won’t be disappointed.

What a nice place!
Timo and Jens was really focused on quality and service and they provided us everything needed to have a perfect vacation!
The villa it's beautiful in an amazing and peaceful location! 10-15 minuts by taxi to Cascais or Estoril. nearby you have a lot of place to visit like Lisbon, Sintra, Nationa Park, beaches, and so on, and a lot of activities that you can do as MTB, Horse Riding, Climbing.
So if you plan to do other activities in between surf and yoga I suggest you to rent a car to have the freedom to move everywhere, taxi can be also a good option because is quite cheap.
Surf and Yoga lesson was really good, very professional and friendly people...
Food is great, and BBQ and Culinary surprise were delicious!
As a family we had a lot of fun, ocean for the kid, surf for me and yoga for my girlfriends, we could not ask more!
To summarize one of the best place where I have been!
