“Nice pub in a small town”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 November 2013

It is quite fun to find this pub in the tiny village of Hope Corner.

On the recent night that I visited, I have to say I was disappointed with the service. Our waitress asked for our dinner orders shortly after we sat down; before offering drinks (shorting herself on tips that way). We ordered drinks, she brought them and then wanted our order, with out ever telling us the specials, which we then asked for.

Apparently, most nights bread is brought to the table, not the night I was there.

The menu is limited, however there is quite a range of prices. Our meals were excellent! My bangers and mash were just lovely, however a small serving of vegetables would have complimented the plate both nutritionally and attractiveness.

Three desserts to choose from. Brownie sundaes are easy, so they appear most places, however that is a poor choice for a "chocolate" dessert.

The restaurant is in a newly constructed barn, which is lovely, however it is always noisy inside. There is little on the walls and ceiling to absorb the voices of other diners.

On more note, they need better exhaust fans. The next morning, I realized that every piece of clothing I had on at dinner, including my coat, now reeked of fried food.

A nice watering hole, but could use a little more attention to detail.

Thank you for your feedback. We would have responded sooner had we not been closed for the Thanksgiving holiday. Our goal is to provide excellent customer service. We are sorry you were disappointed with the service you received during your recent visit and have shared your comments with our staff of servers.

We are happy you and your guests found the meals to be "excellent" and "lovely". The Bangers and mashed as described on the menu do not come with vegetables, however, for an additional charge, we offer sides of the daily starch and vegetable as well as small (or half) salads should you desire an accompanying vegetable with future meals.

All of our bread products (including the Kaiser rolls) are made from scratch, in-house, daily. Bread accompanies all entrees. We are happy to provide bread (at no charge) to guests that order tavern fare, salads or appetizers. Just let us know and we will gladly accommodate your request.

Our deserts are also made from scratch, in-house and choices may change weekly. You are correct, brownie sundaes are easy but also very delicious. We make ours with Gifford's Old Fashion Vanilla Ice Cream ~ YUM! It has unquestionably been our most popular choice for desert since it was featured in DownEast Magazine's edition on the best comfort food of Maine (March 2011). For this reason, we will always offer brownie sundaes (the kids love them too). With advance notice, we are happy to offer additional chocolate desert choices, just let us know when you reserve your table.

Our kitchen is equipped with an expensive and very efficient CaptiveAir hood ventilation system that was installed new when the restaurant opened. It is regularly cleaned and maintained. Since opening six and a half years ago, we have never had a guest complain about smoke or food odor. Thank you for bringing your concern to our attention. We will monitor this going forward.

As a meeting place for locals and visitors to the midcoast alike, our tavern can become quite robust and some may say noisy. We love it when this happens since it usually means we are busy. That makes us happy because the community is utilizing the service we provide and enjoying our food, drink and each other's company. Should you desire a more quite, intimate setting for future visits with us, we are happy to provide you setting in our loft area which is farthest removed from the activity of the bar. Just let us know when you make your reservation and we will gladly accommodate your request.

We are very proud and honored to be considered a "nice watering hole" for the members of our community as well as the many visitors to the lovely town of Hope Maine.

“wonderful meal and peaceful setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2013

We found Hatchet Mountain Publick House on Trip advisor and we were not not disappointed. We had dinner on the back deck (no AC and it was a really hot/humid night in July.) The deck overlooked the large green yard with a few fruit trees. Our server who was extremely busy (only one server and one bartender and the place was packed) apologized many times for not giving us her undivided attention. It was fine with us - we were having cocktails, apps and enjoyed our time on the deck, we were in no rush. Dinner (burgers and fried fish dinners) did not disappoint so we even opted for dessert which was delicious! We closed the place which gave us a chance to personally meet the owner/bartender/server/host extraordinaire! He was pleasant, eager to share his story (ask him who he played guitar with!) Strongly suggest especially if you want to get away from the craziness of Camden Rockport areas.

“More than meets the eye”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2013

Some modest-looking old buildings hold a very pleasant surprise in off-the-beaten-track Hope, Maine. The nicely appointed interior was inviting. The bar was well-stocked and the bartender knew what he was doing. The menu was not extensive but covered the bases that you'd expect in a place that calls itself a pub. The food was well-cooked and attractively presented. The two ladies at our table declared the fish and chips first-class. I had the bangers and mash (it's an Irish pub) and this was very good as well. We split a dessert three ways and were all pleased. I'm certain that we'll be back.

“Perfect country restaurant!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2013

Well, here's yet another 5 star review. This is the perfect country restaurant that's not a long drive away!! If you're tired of waiting in lines with tourists and want someplace quiet, peaceful, and reasonable that takes reservations, Hatchet Mountain Publick House is the place. From almost anywhere in mid-coast (Camden Rockland, Waldoboro), it's is less than 30 minutes away, but take the beautiful scenic back roads to get there as part of the expereince. We went based on the excellent reviews here on Tripadvisor and all the reviews are exactly right! The restaurant is in a lovely farmhouse and is decorated in a rustic but elegant theme, filled with antiques. It's billed as a tavern, so it offers a wide variety of sandwiches as well as two or three dinner entree specials. As an appetizer, we split a salad with local greens, blueberries, roasted pine nuts, and a blueberry vinaigrette dressing that was emulsified perfectly and clung to the salad. The half salad I ate was more than most full salads at other places. We then had the honey dipped grilled salmon special, which was the best salmon we've ever had! It was perfectly cooked and came with wonderful garlic mashed potatoes and whole green beans. (A diner at another table had the other special, hangar steak, and told us it was fabulous.) We were so thrilled with the dinner that we asked to speak to the owner/chef, Brian, who told us that he only uses fresh ingredients and almost all are locally produced. He bakes all the rolls and bread himself and even grew the greens in the salad on the premises. We're just sorry we didn't go until near the end of our trip, but we plan to come back for lunch before we leave. It was such a lovely drive, meal, and total experience - and everyone from "away" should be supporting local chefs and restaurants!! (And we're not related to the owner; we just thought this was such a find that we should share it......)

“Off the beaten path,But well worth the trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2013

I recently received a referral from a friend to check out Hatchet Mountain Publick House In Hope Maine. I have heard about this restaurant before and have head nothing but good feedback. This gem of a pub/Restaurant is kind of off the beaten path in Hope on RT 235,but well worth the trip. The atmosphere is delightful has soon has you walk through the front entrance, A mix of old English pub style and early American rustic style. The menu has more than enough items to please any appetite! We had reservations and arrived a bit early so we sat at the bar and had a drink and some of the best chicken wings I have ever tasted. The service was very attended and quick, we were brought to our table exactly to the reservation time, the waitress ideally advised us of the dinner specials which were in addition to the regular menu items,we ordered the surf and turf with a medium rare filets and the fish and chips with a salad. The portions arrived promptly and were more than enough for the very hungry, the surf and turf was prepared to perfection with sautéed shrimp and vegetables with added potato . The surf and turf was immaculately flavorful and very pleasing on the palette ,it hit the spot! the fish and chips were big portioned , served English style and were wonderful. Overall the food was excellent, the atmosphere was wonderful and the service was top notch. I would recommend this fine restaurant to any one,or if your looking to get out of the big city and get lost in the country side of Hope ,get some hiking in and build up a good appetite, than visit Hatchet Mountain Publick House for a fine dinner,I suggest you make reservations and visit this fine hidden gem!
